Salut to Neferia and The Art of the Party Dress

posted by Gidge Uriza

There is a very short list of creators who make what I call “traditional party dresses” of high quality. I have always counted on Ivalde to supply me with a good deal of my inventory in this category, I suppose because it was the 1950s in my last life? Continue reading

Oleanna

Now, this dress is as far in spirit from the white Odelia dress in my last post as the Norwegian song I will share in this post is from Tryggare kan ingen vara. This is a hot, sultry dress promising the the world  just as the old Norwegian song Oleanna promised the emigrants who left for America. It’s the Norwegian version of the Big Rock Candy Mountain – in spirit. And this dress is as rich in promise.

This time the English and Norwegian versions are done together.

Tryggare kan ingen vara

As many of you have already learned, Neferia Abel is leaving Second Life for several months while  she moves, fulfills her dream of illustrating a children’s book and recovers her health.  An ambitious set of goals and I am sure each and every one of us wish her success in every one and hope for her speedy return. Like many others, I will share a couple favorites today, but first I want to share a  lovely song that suits this heavenly dress and will most likely be familiar to Neferia since there is so much cross-cultural sharing between Norwegians and Swedes. It was my father’s favorite hymn. He was Swedish and it was sung at his funeral – and to perfectly frank, at every funeral on that side of the family. Sometimes I think it’s the only Swedish song everyone still remembers besides Oleanna and Nikolina (believe me they are NOT funeral appropriate.)

Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall

When I looked in my clothing folder this morning I saw a lonely little jacket not in a folder, but sitting there all alone and loose. I recognized the name and realized it was one that I bought Humby Designs on my shopping spree. I just came without a folder and so I decided to make an outfit around it – the one you see above. It’s a great outfit. Still, gray plaid jacket and an autumn look is pretty predictable, isn’t it? So…for fun…I decided to take that simple jacket and style one outfit for each season. If you like wearing traditional clothing, you may look into these Lederhose Damen fashion items.

All photos are shot at MDR’s Photo Park which is open to the public. Click on through if you want to see more details on the outfits. And – if any bloggers out there want to take a shot at making an All-Seasons Item post, I would love to see it.

Fashionable Relay Challenge #30

How many of us thought it would take more than two months to work our way through the Fashionable Relay Challenge – and that we have is testament to the inspiration and guiding force behind the challenge Sasy Scarborough – and she will surely see us through to the end. I have enjoyed seeing the varied but always well-executed outfits throughout the challenge, but none more so than Elisabeth of Ou la la mode, so I was very pleased when Sasy asked me to pick up the baton after her. So, her outfit has several elements that I would love to build an outfit from including the jeans, vest, belt, hair and shoes. I ran around checking them out and finally decided on the Wide Belt Embossing from Coco because I needed a good casual prim belt.

There are Two Universal Truths You Must Embrace

1. There is No SEX In the Champagne Room.
2. We don’t Do Drama on It’s Only Fashion.

🙂

Seriously, I’m a meanie though, when I want to be, aren’t I?

Hope you all enjoyed Tenshi’s little joke. Or if you didn’t enjoy it, tough noogies suckaz!

(oh and for the record I’m ok with photosourcing if it’s done well but Tenshi gets her panties in a bunch about it but you know, blah blah blah that’s her deal not mine.)

Photosourcing Indignation – Only When It's Not You

I have decided that 500-700 hits a day aren’t enough and I want a piece of the drama traffic as well. So, that being said, I’m going to start daily posting things which annoy the living hell out of me.

That’s right. Sit down, school is in session.

First up the crusader against content theft and nutfuckery Tenshi Vielle of Shopping Cart Disco, who has thrown under the bus Bianca Foulon and  Muism for their mutual photosourcing of a GOD AWFUL top , has apparently decided that since SHE doesn’t read any fashion blogs that none of the rest of us do……….

Hmmmm, Where Hath I Seen This Dress Before?

Seriously Tenshi, did you think that we wouldn’t notice that you lifted this STRAIGHT off of Fred Flare?   I suppose that righteous indignation is good for SCD but over on Crap Fashion it’s just all good to do whatever is fun at the moment with no moral compass?

And then to make matters worse you’ve got perfectly respectable folks SUPPORTING this hypocrisy?

Please. I’m thoroughly disgusted with the whole thing.

School’s out. You may resume your lives.

134

134, that’s the amount of my Avatar Rendering Cost. I thought about going for 1, but really wanted to see what I could manage and still feel not just dressed, but styled and accessorized. I was aided in reaching my goal by the new skin and hair sets from Monicuzzo Babenco of YourSkin/YourShape. I posted this morning her hair in brown, lamenting the lack of a red hair. In plurk someone mentioned no one ever does blonde…and lo, what should I get but an IM from Monicuzzo alerting me to the fact that she had just finished a blonde skin (one with three shades of blonde hair) and was working on a red one. Yay! I am ready for the Relay For Life Clothing Fair!

Long Akward Posemaker Appreciation

posted by Gidge Uriza

Stepping up to meet Achariya’s Challenge are probably mostly photographers,  as photography is truly the symbiant love of the posemaker.  But, as a model who spends a great deal of time STANDING on poses, sorting through them sometimes and other times BEING sorted through on them, I actually have some great love for the art. Another Mwuah for Ivalde

I remember the first time I saw pre-pleated fabric on bolts. I was in Algeciras across the bay from Gibraltar, living with a family there while attending school. We went fabric shopping and went into a fabric store that was made for film with shelves up to the ceiling overflowing with fabrics, a rail with a sliding ladder like in old book stores and that aura of having existed in one place for over a hundred years. The store was dim and the bright sun of the Costa del Sol was kept out by thick velvet curtains – guardians against fading and sun damage. My friend was making herself a skirt and we looked at dozens of shades of cream in fabrics with sharp, narrow pleats. I had never seen such variety and abundance in fabric choices nor had I ever been in such an atmospheric and magical store.  Back home, the fabric store was a back room at the florist shop and cream was cream was cream and the idea of a dozen shades of cream was unimaginable.  I think that store was where I caught the fashion bug.

Ivalde’s Neferia Abel probably has been to more fabric stores that have multiple shades of cream than those who offer only one – you can see that in the subtlety with which she approaches color in this dress, Benedicte.
