You Gotta Have Hope

This chic ensemble is one of the expansive galaxy of options available when you buy the Rebel Hope Tuxedo – available at Rebel Hope Designs. Yesterday, Rebel Hope was the target of the most brazen content theft I have ever seen. It has been well-covered in Shopping Cart Disco here and here and my goal is not to cover the incident but suggest a way we as a community can show solidarity with the creators and combat content theft.

I am asking fellow bloggers to showcase some of the wonderful Rebel Hope content – gorgeous clothing like this or the homes and furniture and to educate their readers to the fact that content theft hurts all of us. We all reach different readers, so the more that take a few paragraphs to educate their readers, the broader the outreach. Normally I would insert a cut here to shorten the length of this post on the feed. Please indulge my longer post on the feed for this important issue.

Content theft is a constant worry for SL creators whose defensive tactics are constantly trumped by new viewers and stratagems for copying content.  Thankfully, many SL residents are sympathetic and disapprove of content theft and actively help by alerting creators to incidents of theft they encounter. Sadly, though, some residents just see it as an opportunity to enjoy free or cheap content and brazenly wear their stolen content or add anti-inspect shields to hide their shame. What they fail to understand is that stolen content affects us all negatively – that those bargains have a cost they do not perceive.

What are the costs? Here’s just a few.

  1. There’s a few stores that employ irritating anti-theft stuff such as click to prove you’re real dialog boxes, that little bit of chat spam telling copybot to quit, etc. These are minor annoyances, but they slow down and lag our SL experience.
  2. We all know one or two stores that have closed after being copybotted, discouraged by not only the theft of their hard work, but by the complacency of Linden Labs and the SL community. This means less content and less innovation.
  3. Costlier products as store owners build into their prices the anticipated early loss of revenue when their products are ripped.
  4. The annoying presence  and hideous lag of anti-inspection devices that people who buy from thieves use to hide their complicity with thieves.
  5. Suspicion and distrust by store owners who employ tactics to fight theft that impinge on all of us.
  6. Ban lists that can be misused and abused and even, it seems, hacked.
  7. Long preachy posts like this one

Dutch Touch CLeO - what a gorgeous face!!!

So, now that we acknowledge that we all pay a price for content theft, what can we do to stop it. First, we can never buy stolen content.  Of course, it’s hard to know sometimes if something is stolen, but there’s one neon-bright clue we can follow. If the prices are unrealistic and too good to be true, it’s probably stolen.  If someone hands you a free box of hundreds of high quality, contemporary hair styles, it’s probably stolen. Don’t accept it, don’t buy it. Secondly, many newcomers and folks who don’t read blogs are unaware of the problem, so we can tell our friends. If you see someone wearing stolen content, let them know – but in a respectful, nonjudgmental way. Assume they purchased it in innocence and judge their complicity by their reaction to your information. Third, if you see stolen content, send a snapshot and slurl to the creator of the original content so s/he can address it. Sometimes what may appear to be stolen is not, so I would not rush to announce it from the hilltops and instead leave it to the creator to lead the charge. The biggest thing we can do though, is be responsible for our own actions and not wear stolen content.

Last but not least, we can all take a strong step against this sort of brazen and shameless theft that was done solely to inflict personal harm by each and everyone of us making a purchase of the real thing and going to Wildwood and supporting Rebel Hope and  RH Engel. This might help sustain them while the recover their business and build new content and also lift their spirits which have taken a hard blow.

Blogger Challenge: More to Love

Hybie challenged us to make a cute plus-sized shape and style it. I dawdled because I was busy on other projects – but last night I bit the bullet and got to it.  Trinny and Suzannah may object to the baby doll as one of their key lessons is to define the shape, not hide it. Nonetheless, I could not resist its powerful allure. The little dress from Fishy Strawberry is too cute and demanded to be worn NOW – and would not wait. I tried to wear something else, but it leapt out of my closet and ran around hollering  “wear me, wear me, wear me.”  Clothes can be so demanding sometimes.

Queen of Hearts:Part 2

posted by Gidge Uriza
The problem with blog-partnering with someone creative and talented is that sometimes, when you pick their brain – they send up more than one good idea. Aztec Queen of Eating Hearts was one great idea of Cajsa’s. But she also tossed out DOLLY! As in ….Hello……Dolly, Well Hello……Dolly.
Because, if you KNOW the story…….Dolly is the beloved matchmaker and mover and shaker of her day.

So Cajsa thought it might be fun to do an updated version – what would the modern Dolly look like? Well, first off – she’d have a hat. A great big flippin’ hat.  This hat from the Ethereal gown set of Sascha’s Designs is just the ticket. Continue reading

Queen of Hearts Part 1

Posted by Gidge Uriza

Winter Jefferson and I are back to our old tricks, challenging one another to something. This week, with all the hoopla surrounding the new Alice in Wonderland – he’s challenged me to be the Queen of Hearts. I in turn challenged him to be the Mad Hatter.

But you know, Queen of Hearts is a broad theme. Because you know – Queen of Eating Hearts is another way to go……..

Cajsa was my willing victim – I’m fairly sure that she gets some sort of sack full of virgins or extra corn in the afterlife for being a martyr, in this pseudo Aztec Ritual we staged in the Rainforest Sim. Continue reading

It’s about time I show you the other dress I used when snapping all the Hair Fair pictures. This again has a simple neckline and does nothing to distract from framing the hair beautifully. From Pixel Dolls, it’s called Cashmere and definitely projects that soft and sensuous fabric.

Bandana Day With the Sexiest Swimsuit in Second Life

So reading the newest issue of Sxy2nd I see that readers voted and chose a swimsuit from JustB as the Sexiest Swimsuit in Second Life. I definitely had to check that out. The suit in the photo was white, but I chose the red for my bandana day outfit because, hey, it’s the 4th of July tomorrow.  You are not seeing the sexiest option, that is after the cut and still discreetly photographed…you know me. I had some running around to do, so I covered up a bit with some other super sexy clothes from Exodi.

If you were paying attention last week, you would have popped over to Exodi for the 50% off sale in which 100% of proceeds were to be donated to Make A Wish Foundation in Michael Jackson’s memory. The total raised was 812.99  which is very exciting. While the sale was on, I ran over and picked up just about all the tops she has.

Big Bad Blogger Challenge #3

Alice Chenaux now asks us: You’ve been given a sim of your very own to use for free for one year. However, there are 3 rules. It cannot be residential, it cannot be commercial, and it has to be open to the public. What do you do with it?

Mimikri takes the art of flirty feminity to a new level with Sina.

Mimikri takes the art of flirty feminity to a new level with Sina.

Well, that’s easy. I would make a photo park like what most of the MDR sim was except for the part that was the studio. There were sections with foliage and weather for each part of the year, an underwater sunken ship and underwater volcano, there was a beach, a corn field, three different waterfalls and all sort of box sets up in the sky. It was a photographer’s dream. A dream that poofed. Luckily there are still wonderful places to shoot all about the grid including Ode where the photo above was taken.

Big Bad Blogger Challenge #2

Alice Chenaux now asks us to describe the perfect day in SL. That’s so hard because different days I want different things from SL, but a day filled with my favorite things would include shooting an outfit or two for the blog, chatting  or styling or shooting with Gidge or going with her to a party and some time chatting with Maht and listening to him play some music. Add a little exploring of a new sim and you have a perfect day and a fairly common Sunday.

As to the dress, this is from DYN – another shop on My Little List – and  I love the explosion of color at the hem.

Big Bad Blogger Challenge Post #1

Alice Chenaux has kicked of the Big Bad Blogger Challenge and I thought why not? The first question is: How long have you been a blogger? How has it enriched your life?

I started my blog on January 1st, 2008 and posted a couple of times and then had no idea what to do, how to get someone else to read it. So it languished for a few months while I began reading the blogs more carefully and learning more about SL fashion. The real start of my blog was in April of 2008 and with Gidge and myself, we have somehow managed to post more 1100 helping of rainbow poop since then.

My life has been enriched by the new friendships I have made thanks to the blog. Not just friendships with designers, jewelers, models, stylists and bloggers, but also with readers who have commented and gone on to IM me in-world. I also have found the challenge of styling a good outfit or making a good photo shoot very fulfilling.
