Blue Skies

aug14_006.jpg

I love ice blue, that wonderful color that seems to be deciding between blue, white and silver and never making up its mind. The ice blue of the  Lani dress from Lelutka is just that perfect shade, holding itself in a state of perfect suspension between the three, never drifting off balance. Add to that perfect ice blue, the beautifully formed bodice and winging single sleeve that arches gracefully over the left shoulder and the lovely sculpted skirt and you have a very cool bit of chic.

Loving the dress color so much, I really wanted to emphasize it by shooting at the beautifully blue sim Noah’s Ark where nearly everything is blue. I also chose the Cheery Cyan windlight setting from Torley Linden to reinforce the blueness.  Continue reading

Dandelions

aug13_010.jpg
I love how things just fall into place in SL sometimes. For example, I went to nostos:deer to shoot this outfit and came across a patch of dandelions and tall grass on my walk to the beach. Just last night, Tenshi Vielle sent a dandelion out to a group I am in, so it seemed like I had to stop and shoot this beautiful dandelion white dress from Lelutka there.

Lucky I Ran Into You

posted by Gidge Uriza

One of the final acts of my favorite Woody Allen movie – HANNAH AND HER SISTERS – is called LUCKY I RAN INTO YOU. It’s about two people who’ve known each other and fall in love despite the past. Making friends can be like that too.

I feel that way a lot about my best friend and blog partner, Cajsa. Continue reading

First Date/Second Date

aug09_015.jpg

Modern Gypsy’s newest collection is full of interesting and avant garde designs. The Dovetta dress is, in my opinion, the most arresting – or the most likely to get you arrested since it doubles as a deadly weapon. In jest, I said it was a First Date dress, but then decided to explore the idea further – styling it for a First Date with an unknown quantity, giving it a hard-edged, remote styling. I added tintable leggings from Fashionably Dead and a belt from M.A.II.K.I in a bright cerise.

Luckily for this imaginary date and me, the prims detach for a more comfortable Second Date. I switched to a red belt from Lelutka and ditched the leggings.

By the Shores of Gitche Gumee

Aug03_005.jpg

When I went to Grey Havens, I was reminded of the magnificent North Shore of Lake Superior – a favorite family vacation place. We always did at least one trip up the North Shore each year. Gitche Gumee was how Longfellow spelled Gichigami, the Ojibwe phrase for “Big Water.”  Having spent time on a research ship counting June Bugs and small fry on Lake Superior, I can tell you it is definitely Big Water.  I decided to go the Grey Havens to shoot the Isabella dress from ORTA because the fabric made me think of the North Shore’s Norway Pine & Blue Spruce and the granite shoreline.

Aug03_001.jpg

Although it makes me think of Lake Superior, Grey Havens has sea lions and whales so that’s saltwater, not freshwater, alas!  By the way, is it TMI to share that Mom had the Song of Hiawatha memorized and always recited big chunks of it while we drove up the North Shore to Grand Portage? Thankfully she never went through the entire poem in one sitting. I think that would take hours. Mom knew 100 or more poems by heart and made all of her kids memorize one poem a week.  My siblings are a generation older than me, and this ritual is one of the few things we have in common. Of course, she never made us memorize Song of Hiawatha as that is just ridiculous.

It's a Dream

I had planned to shoot four of these gorgeous tops from Orage Creations but SL had other plans. It decided that despite all my plans, I would be a cloud for the day yesterday. Seriously, I tried clearing cache, restarting not just Second Life but also my computer and the SL, SL Beta, SnowGlobe, Kristens, Emerald and Emerald Beta viewers and despite it all, I stayed a cloud.  I finally resolved the issue about midnight, but I was not going to shoot photos that late, so I will have to be content with showing you just the gorgeous zebra Dream Top and let you check out the leopard, snake and fleur (b and white brocade) on your own.  The Orage Creations Main Store was closed for renovations this weekend, but the tops can be found at affiliates in Best of SL, Costa Rica and Saudi Arabia. I shot this set at Third World – home of the Third World Bar and Third World Kino. It’s a beautiful sim with many tiny set pieces of surreality and beauty for you to enjoy.  To get a taste of the amazing scenes at Third World, take a look at the Flickriver stream of interesting photos shot there.

Inspiration

jul24_003.jpg

Sometimes when you see a design you can trace its roots and inspirations in the choices of fabric, color or textures or in the shape and forms it assumes. In this dress from G Sloane Couture, you can see two inspirations at work. The print in the fabric draws pays homage to the fabulous art of Gustav Klimpt. In particular, it reminds me of the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer though it is clearly not a copy of that dress or his work, but something inspired and re-imagined from memories and admiration for Klimpt’s work.  The form of the dress is very original, with its squared lines and offset angles – and in it I can see the architectural work and Art Deco influence of Frank Lloyd Wright.

IFW10 – Lusts of the Flesh

In addition to getting a concentrated does of high fashion and raising funds for charity, events like International Fashion Week also introduce us to new creators – perhaps not new to the grid, but new to us. This IFW10 I discovered more than one new-to-me designer, but only one was also a new-to-me word – Convoitise. So I had to look it up and while it can mean covet or desire, I had to go with the last one for the blog title in light of the micro-mini but macro-sexy dress from Convoitise.

IFW10: Going to the Chapel

Second Life has created a transnational community that illustrates on a daily basis that the people of the world have more that binds us together than divides us.  Some of  those ties are frivolous such as excitement over the World Cup and love of fashion and music. There are also more profound bindings as well – such as the certain fact that all of us have someone in our lives affected by cancer. No wonder, then, that Relay For Life is such a huge series of events over the course of the year.  This weekend, International Fashion Week features 20 designers – and all have a unique design on auction to raise funds for RFL. Of course, there are all sorts of other fabulous creations there such as this gown I am teasing you with.

Meanwhile, it’s Relay Weekend and as part of that the fabulous St. Illuninatious Cathedral is also on auction.  Now, some might find it sad that one of the strongest forces unifying people in Second Life is cancer, but that’s not quite accurate. The strongest force unifying people in Second Life is hope – the hope that working together they can defeat cancer.
