New York Origami

Oct02_015.jpg

I love the Designers United events. By focusing designers on a single inspiration, not only do they let us see an idea reimagined in many ways, they also often force designers out of their comfort zones into a new way of thinking about design. DU 19 was an extension of the DU 4 event focused on Narcissus and designers shared creations inspired by some of the alternate choices for inspiration for DU4: metamorphisis, 60s space age or origami. This dress is Anya Ohmai’s creation based on origami and gives us a new iteration of the paper dress.

I shot it at Rez on the land down below the landing point which is on an island anchored by the chain you see in the photo. If you walk to the edge of the island and let yourself fall, you will find yourself down at this very modern Stonehenge.

You can see a more complete picture of Rez here. The landing point is on the island above.

IFW10 – Lusts of the Flesh

In addition to getting a concentrated does of high fashion and raising funds for charity, events like International Fashion Week also introduce us to new creators – perhaps not new to the grid, but new to us. This IFW10 I discovered more than one new-to-me designer, but only one was also a new-to-me word – Convoitise. So I had to look it up and while it can mean covet or desire, I had to go with the last one for the blog title in light of the micro-mini but macro-sexy dress from Convoitise.

Expectations 5 – Ritzy Expectations

What to wear to the Ritz? If Sn@tch doesn’t come to mind, your letting yourself get boxed into categories that stifle, rather than catalog. For this Grand Entrance, I mixed two elements from Sn@tch with contemporary accessories that combine for an outfit perfect for a 21st century remake of High Society.  I was thinking High Society, not Philadelphia Story – so the hair is a lovely ponytail from Lamb.

Expectations

Every once in awhile someone produces a list of The Best of  SL Merchants in different categories. For consumers, these lists can be useful lists of new places to check out and a source for ideas of where to look, but there is the downside of short-circuiting you own exploration and the fun of finding new and unique stores. For retailers, the lists are a great boost in building traffic and brand recognition, but there is also a downside of getting pigeon-holed. That certainly has happened with Sn@tch – a store that is often labeled Punk, Goth, Grunge or whatever is the au courant label for Alternative clothing. The category fits, but too tightly – and ignores the wonderful range of mainstream separates and high fashion outfits that you can find at Sn@tch. I thought I might spend a few days highlighting how Sn@tch is much more than the label and do my small part to stretch expectations.

Consider this Uptown outfit from Sn@tch. Yes, with the right accessories, hair and makeup, it could look alternative.  However, it’s a beautifully coordinated and completely mainstream sweater and skirt that is perfectly at home in a museum, a fundraiser or most any event short of a formal ball. It’s simply beautifully done.

Gogo's 20L Top to Bottom Challenge

Gogo’s Newbie Style Challenge ends today. I would have fared better if SL had not been so crashtastic yesterday. However, I did manage to put together a few looks that work.  This one cost 1L for the hair, all the rest was free. The top comes from Orage Creations and is part of a top and skirt set. I opted for the capris, one of a blue and black fatpack free from Uzuri. The boots are from N-Core and require joining the group for free. The boots can be changed from black to red or white with the click of your mouse. You can also choose multiple colors for the warmers or not wear them at all.

Fun With Leggings

When Gidge and I were shopping at Baiastice the other night I saw a pair of leggings that had Gidge’s name all over them. These Punes pants were an avant garde set of black leggings with an open inset edged with studs.  I could not resist picking up a pair for myself, too, though I had a different idea in mind – combining them with other leggings to create a color inset. The floral leggings from Vo Polou’s brand new store MV struck me as perfect.

Feeling Groovy

Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.

I was certainly feeling groovy when I put on the lovely new sunglasses from Lelutka. A fun surprise group gift, I could not resist adding them to this fun little outfit featuring a sweater and skirt from MiaMai.
