Rockin' It

If Lady Gaga were in Second Life, she would shop at Diram. I know this, not because she told me, but because I believe we all have a small inner Lady Gaga bursting to get out and be outrageous from time to time. I know it’s cool to hate on Lady Gaga for being commercial, for being too pop, for selling out, for being over-produced and so on. I don’t care. Sometimes the reason people are really super successful and popular is not because they sold out to reach the lowest common denominator, but because they are that good.  She’s one of those. If you doubt me, listen to her sing Poker Face at the piano – no synthesizers, nothing but a fine pure voice. That woman has pipes!

Macrame

This gorgeous body suit from Baiastice is called Macrame. When you say macrame to me, that’s not what comes to mind.  To be honest, every time I see the word macrame, I think of this Portland restaurant called the Daily Planet – a burger and fries kind of restaurant/pub – that has these huge macrame plant and light fixture things hanging from the ceiling all made of jute. Now, imagine how years of fry-cooking grease-laden air will affect that jute rope they are made of and what it may look like if seldom cleaned and you will get an idea why I only went there once and why the word macrame is terribly unappealing. So, with my anti-macrame bias solidly on high alert, I tried on this outfit and was surprised by how lovely it is – and seriously, that’s lovely gorgeous beautiful lace – not macrame. And did I have fun mixing it up with some skirts.

Off the hook

Sachi Vixen sent me the sexiest little dress. In fact, it was a twofer as it comes with two options for wearing it – as a mini or as a longer, can-can style skirt.  I decided to wear it as the mini so I could wear these MichaMi stockings that have to have been made for that. If not, those Sachi and Milla have some weird psychic thing going on.

Julie Marsden Didn't Have This Red Dress

In the classic Bette Davis film Jezebel, Davis’ character Julie Marsden shocks society by wearing a red dress to her debutante ball. Her hapless, weakling of a fiance dumps her at the end of the evening – lacking the guts to marry a woman who doesn’t conform. Incidentally, I don’t think that is how we are supposed to perceive their relationship, I think we are supposed to think she had it coming, the shameless hussy! However, when I saw the film my first thought was “you’re better off without that prig.” I often don’t think the way I am “supposed to” about films. Anyway, my idea is that if Julie Marsden has this red dress, Preston might have found some backbone and stayed engaged, they would have married, lived happily ever after and he never would have caught yellow fever – a fitting end for someone who dumps his girl because she wears a shocking dress.

Thoughts of Spring

1800 miles due east of Portland is where I grew up – in the Northwoods of Minnesota. It sounds much closer in longitude. Only 26 degrees away. However, here thoughts of spring are in the air. In the courtyard there are some crocuses popping up. There’s a small bed of daffodils blooming alongside the church across the street. My best friends camellias are blooming and there’s pregnant buds on the magnolias.  Back home, a blanket of snow covers the ground and it’s a frigid -6 degrees Fahrenheit, that’s -21 to the rest of the world. I am so glad to be here where I can think of spring and put on such a lovely gown as this vernal confection from Lady Thera.

Al Andaluz

I spent some time in Andalucia living with a family in Algeciras during me senior year in High School. One of their favorite things to do on the weekend was to drive to the mountains and make a paella over an open fire, play guitar, sing and dance flamenco. They would be joined by other families and there would be these crazy fun parties outside in the hills with extraordinary music and dance. There was one woman, Josefina, called Fifi, who danced professionally. It really is something you never forget, seeing someone who truly excels at their craft performing among friends and family. The dress, Andaluz, from Nardcotix reminds me so much of those weekends. Continue reading
