Don't Tell Mama! We're having a vaudeville party!

Mama
Thinks I’m living in a convent,
A secluded little convent
In the southern part of France.

Mama
Doesn’t even have an inkling
That I’m working in a Nightclub
In a pair of Lacy pants.

So please, sir.
If you run into my Mama,
Don’t reveal my indiscretion,
Give a working girl a chance.

I love cabaret, burlesque and vaudeville music – the naughty risque and boisterously celebratory music that has mostly faded away though resuscitated from time to time with revival CD’s like Ute Lemper’s Berlin Cabaret Songs where you can hear Don’t Tell Mama in all its glory.  Authorities like to pretend that culture marches in a straight line directly from nostalgic purity to modern hedonism on its way to hellfire and damnation. It’s much more complicated than that – and really goes through eras of social liberality and repression, openness and prudery, swinging back and forth like a pendulum and while one or the other might be in ascendent, the other cultural mores are there waiting their turn again.  The prudes tsk-tsking away during liberal eras and the flamboyant maintaining an underground cultural freedom during repressive eras.

The 1890’s through the early 1930’s were an era of liberality that sparked great music, new fashions and new roles for women. Certainly the raunchiest song I have ever heard is from that era, raunchier by far than anything by Nine Inch Nails or Soulja Boy.  Beware, it’s Not Safe For Work!  There were also songs about the drug culture such as Wacky Dust and Reefer Man.  Remember that when someone’s granddad or great granddad is going off complaining about “kids today” that really, everything old is new again, including raunchy music.

So, to celebrate the fabulous fashions of the Designers United Vaudeville exhibition and the joyous music of that time period, I thought a Vaudeville/Burlesque Dance Party might be in order – and Sasy Scarborough graciously offered The Deck as a venue….so please, mark your calendars for 8 p.m. Saturday January 2nd at the Deck for a crazy set of music from the past – and some from the present, too.

Woot! Woot!

PixelDolls Crochet Dress Kit

In plurk yesterday someone asked where folks buy gestures and I snarked that I don’t buy them because I hate them. I have never used the Woot! or Hoo! gestures. In fact, I deleted them as I do most gestures. So of course, friends have had to send me little messages saying Woot! because that’s  how the world works.

Now, about a week ago, I was actually in a position where the Woot! gesture would have been appropriate. You might recall the outfit I wore last week with the black crochet gloves. Folks could not find it, so I im’ed Nephaline Protagonist the creator of PixelDolls and asked if it was still on sale. She said she was going to make it a group gift, but then….the next day I got this off-line IM to email. “Hi sweetie! I tracked down that glove map, and reworked the whole thing a bit- I had quite forgotten what a neat top and stuff that was. I just put some items in my shop that use the maps- I’m sending you copies via Xstreet. Thanks for everything!!! <3”

Woot! She released three (four if you count the white skirt options) versions of the older dress, reworked so they are even better.  So here they are, thanks in part to you readers asking how to find those gloves, which prompted me to ask, prompting her to revisit those old files. And seriously, these dresses are too sexy by half – whether the daring crochet or the slightly more demure lace, with or without the corset. These are clothes for when you are hell bent on seduction and some of the hottest gloves ever.

I'm Bad

I am a little bad, I admit, in not getting around to posting any sort of Michael Jackson tribute until now. However, I only just decided to do this when I found the King of Pop pose set at 5ifth Order poses. I only picked up three of the 10 poses – though the entire set was tempting. Actually, the animator has a lovely tableua set up with pose balls that is just itching for a group to go jump on the pose balls and do a great group shot in all the poses. There’s fog, rocks, lights – very King of Pop!  Just as is this outfit I pulled together from Bare Rose, LeeZu and Milk Motion.

Perquisites

Blogging has many perquisites, or perks, that we try to make as transparent as possible so our readers know what may or may not influence us. I had to use the word perquisites instead of the usual perks just because 10 dollar words drive Tenshi crazy. And who can resist the opportunity?  Among the perks are occasional promotional copies, advance notice of some releases and even seeing and having an opportunity to give opinions on items in the process of creation. One perk not often mentioned is the occasional discovery of new stores and talents that come about as a result of a designer knocking on my IM window and saying I am sending you a couple items and hope you will look at them.  And that happened this weekend when Nikki Herron of G&N Quality Design sent me a couple folders, including this freebie that she has on offer for this week only.  I was immediately impressed by the quality of the textures – and the bold sweep of the top. I really love the attention taken with the wrinkles, the weave of the fabric and the weave in the capris.

I've Been Wearing Rainbows

Bliensen & Maitai have found a new home in the Starlust region – on Horst, to be exact. To celebrate, there are new releases including shoes, jewelry and this incredible rainbow dress. Wait until you see the bottom, though that lovely rainbow froth of lace at the bodice gives you a hint.

Thanks, Thalia!

I love Thalia Jie’s sense of style – ever since the first time I met her at last year’s Something Fair/Expo and she said “I love your hair,” and when I looked at her, she was wearing the same hair. The other day I saw her style an dress by Patrizia Blessed on MAD Image that had me scrambling to check out the store. Not only did I find an array of arresting dresses, but that’s also where I found the baby doll in the last post. The store is full of fabulous and original dresses and gowns. I love this gold and black number.

Eponymous Me!

The Cajsa Suit comes with a black wide belt, however, I wanted the bright orange pop of this M*A*ii*K*I belt to counterbalance the necklace.

So, more in jest than in than anything, I have occasionally whined that with a name like Cajsa, I will never get anything named after me. After all, who would no know to pronounce it. Well, Leah McCullough of NAIVE did a cannonball into the pool and created the suit I am wearing above and named it Cajsa. Yes, I now have eponymous clothing!! So, here’s the tutorial so you can run to NAIVE and pick up the Cajsa Suit in blue (shown), pink, gray or black. The first syllable is pronounced CAI as in Cairo and the second is pronounced ZHA as in Asia. No excuses now, so off you get to NAIVE. Meanwhile, I am going to jam to James Brown:

I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would, now
So good, so good, I got you

Whoa! I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, I got you
