You will be assimilated

So I wrote this funny post about being assimilated into the beige excess nutf*ckery of Gidge and Winter and titled it Resistance Is Futile. Funnily enough, Gidge titled her post the same so when I hit publish, my post disappeared. Dang! So starting from scratch, where was I? Yes, I was innocently flirting with this guy who shall remain nameless when I got an IM from Gidge telling me that she and Winter were shopping at fri.day. Then, another im, they are buying all beige. Not tempted. Then the third – not an im, a snap of them in their matching Borg, er Beigewear. Damn, I was assimilated and tp’ed to fri.day where half the grid was shopping in a mad frenzy.

A Midsummer Night

MDR Photo Studio had their first party under the new management of Arcadia Nightfire and Rhodesy Durant and it was a hit. There were so many people there and folks had a great time. It was the second MDR Midsummer Night party and most folks dressed in fairy costumes. Even Gidge’s husband Silo found wings for his robot avatar that were perfect. I headed to the Fantasy Faire figuring why not support RFL while looking for my costume.  Fancy Fairy was perfect and that’s where I found this lovely dress and wings.

Am I blue?

Yes, blue only in the fabric though, not in spirit. How can you feel blue when you’re wearing something this gorgeous. This is the Wanda dress from Kunglers Couture and it’s as luscious and lovely as they come.  I adore the spray of lilies on the bodice. This called for some special hair so I pulled out the Jane with feathers from Sparkle Skye and then tinted the black feathers blue to match the gown.

Relay For Life

The Relay For Life Fashion Expo is in its fifth day and having visted three times, I can attest that it’s been a pleasant and lag-free experience everytime. Excitement around this expo seems subdued and perhaps that is due to a surfeit of fashion events and celebrations. However, that should not discourage anyone from going to this event for several reasons. Foremost, there are many special creations on sale that benefit the search for cancer treatments. Secondly, many designers respond to the challenge of creating some limited edition item for sale at these expose with some of their best work. Third, you should go just to see the magnificent one-of-a-kind designs that will be auctioned off to raise even more money for cancer research.  Fourth, if you love purple – RFL is a purple fest. Now the dress I am wearing is Baiastice special edition RFL dress. The jewelry is EarthStone special RFL set. Continue reading

Catching up with Lorelei

Whippet & Buck's High-waisted skirt allows for fun mixing and matching.

One of the real pleasures of the Double Take project is catching up with old friends with whom I have lost touch. One such person is Lorelei Maggs whom I met when I worked cleaning up prim trash at Vicious and Gidge was my boss. She was also an early client of MDR Studio – though Maht took her pictures, not me. So last night was the first time she was in front of my camera and as soon as I zoomed in I saw she had on some breathtaking jewelry. Surprise, surprise! She had made it. I got a LM and went there immediately after I finished shooting last night and picked up some amazing sets…one of which I put on and decided to add to this outfit.

Nyte'N'Day Take Two

So having established that Nyte’N’Day produces new, current and luxurious styles, let me show you how Nyte’N’Day also rocks. Take for example, this top/minidress called Snap. Now how many people dare put something out in Blaze Orange? Not that many. Nyte has this luscioius and versatile dress out in several colors and also selles a lovely corset that could be paired with it as well. I decided to go a different route, though and grabbed the belts on the the jacket layer from one of Zaara’s old dresses.

Night & Day:::Nyte'N'Day

Raise your hands if you have at least one outfit from Nyte’N’Day? Wow, almost everyone. That’s kind of what I thought. Me, too. I have several outfits from there including the very first purchase I made in Second Life, the Nyte’N’Day Rainment skirt in black.  Dove Swanson of Long Awkward Pose (whose poses I am using in this post) wondered yesterday if its possible that because so many of us identify Nyte’N’Day with our noobish era, that we fail to recognize how current and good the designs are. I think there’s some truth to that.

But that’s cutting us off from some great design because Nyte Caligari has not been just sitting there making the same old thing. Her clothes have evolved and her skills have advanced and her clothes are as exciting as anyone. Take this jacket for example – beautifully made, chic and smart as she linked the collar and belt so that they only take one attachment point. Sure you have to edit the separately to fit your particular torso length – but we all can do that. Continue reading

Origami

Have you ever seen at a gas station or garage when some gasoline spills on a puddle of water? That’s what the iridescent colors in this dress remind me of – the rainbow within reach.  This is really an amazing gown -taking the folden shapes from origami and translating them into a wild and beautiful concoction. It was a gift from AvaGardner  Kungler which she gave a thank you for her photos in the Double Take project. I will share one of those photos below.

Marketing Matters

Coco & Co. Tailleur Romy

I admire clothing designers. I have no idea how they have the patience to match seams and the control to do the fine detail work. Even though I understand the technical aspect of how clothes are made, it doesn’t matter. In addition to technical knowledge, skill, imagination and creativity, I utterly lack on essential ingredient and that is patience. I could no more spend hours on a drawing than I could climb Mount Everest. I can however, shoot a photo and even get rid of those white lines as needed to make an alpha cutout for a floor stand. So, typically I assumed that if the alpha displays in a store were poorly done (something I could do) then the clothes would be poorly done as well (something I could not do.)

Coco & Co Chausettes en Dentelle et Noir

However, today I was in a store that had clothes based on Chanel designs, clothes made with me in mind. Tweedy, nubby knits, tailored jackets, system skirts, all my fashion loves wrapped up together. The alpha textures displaying the clothing, however, were terrible. But, oh I did want the clothing. So…I put out a plurk question for designers asking if I was wrong to assume bad alpha displays = bad clothing and though there was some belief that what is worth doing is worth doing well (yes!) that in all honesty, my assumption was wrong and that the only way to tell was to buy something. So… I bought the least expensive outfit.

Coco & Co Ensemble Chemesier Caramel et Jupe Culottes

And the edges were perfect! Seams were matched! It was everything I hoped it would be and oh, no, I spent too much money. Here are three of the outfits I picked up – inspired by real life designs and absolutely scrumptious.

How to Avoid Ugly White Edges on Your Alpha Textures: There’s a handy-dandy tutorial by Robin Wood on how to make an alpha channel. The Solidify filter that makes it easy to have nice clean edges is free and can be downloaded from Flaming Pear here.  To be honest, there have been stores I have not purchased tempting items from because of bad alpha displays. The only reason I made the purchases today was that I was assured that it did not necessarily mean the clothes were bad. However, no one was going to guarantee they would be good since those kind of problems can mean not caring about details.

Quick Look – Rebel Hope

I ran over to check out the 1920’s Berlin build and when I popped in, I saw that we were asked to dress for the period. I have folders inside folders inside folders in my inventory and in my Clothing Folder, there is a Vintage folder and inside that there is a Twenties folder. So I popped this on and was ready to go.
