Comfort

sept27_004

Autumn is the time for layers and layers of knits and wools and cuddling up warm and cozy or running through the woods kicking the leaves up into the air. The secret to comfort in the fall is layering so that you can take something off while in a heated room or in the heat of the sun and put it back on when the sun hides behind a cloud. In this outfit, I layered a cozy thermal knit top from Sakide with a short wool jacket from VoguE. I have that top in every color and only wish there were more colors of it – one of my favorite wardrobe basic of all time. The jacket is part of an outfit from Vogue that comes with pants, gloves, top, the works, but there’s no reason not to pull out the pieces to mix and match with something else. I blogged the jacket about a year ago with the gloves. It’s one of those striking pieces that work well with others.

Many Happy Returns

SolAria - L'Aph

Before I ever began blogging, I was an avid shopper. One of my favorite designers was Aphrodite Outlander and I had fatpacks of her Vintish pumps and her Sasy mules as well as many of her dresses. Early readers would find several posts with her clothing and shoes back in 2008 and 2009. I loved her bold, painterly use of color – as if Gauguin had decided to make clothes in Second Life®. Like many early creators, she closed her store. Luckily for us, though, her retirement turned out be a sabbatical instead. She’s launched a new store named L’Alph which she opened with several mesh shoes and dresses. I was so excited and am thrilled to be wearing one of her new dresses – Eva. She made it in twelve striking colors, but I chose the black one with the silver print. That gorgeous ring is from [glow] studio and can be found at FAIR – the new monthly design showcase from Chic Management. It opens at 4 PM today.

Are you a Chiffonzie?

Aug23_003

A chiffonzie is a designer who automatically reaches for the silk chiffon when making a dress. It’s a new term coined by some Project Runway competitors to refer to a small cadre of drape-addicted designers who seem to only design with silk chiffon. Appolonia Criss is not a chiffonzie. She uses all sorts of fabrics and designs highly structured as well as soft, flowing work. However, this silk chiffon dress is a wonderful example of what a chiffonzie can do – make a delightfully feminine froth of a dress.

New Donna Flora for Vintage Fair

aug18_002

Donna Flora added another dress to their Vintage Fair offerings. It’s a luscious little dress released in ten colors (See vendor pic 1 and pic 2.) including this glorious gold silk charmeuse. It’s amazing how beautifully shiny the silk is, but then you see the inset piping around the breasts and at the waist, and just have to marvel at Squinternet Larnia’s texturing ability.

Second Serendipity

july08_010

I love how Second Life Serendipity works. Take this outfit. I found this gorgeous Iris skirt at Leverocci and was looking for a good top to wear with it. I had tried on top in my White Tops folder and settled on a nice tank and a jacket which made a nice classic look, but was not what I had envisioned. Suddenly someone posts a vendor pic of Betty Doyle’s new top for Ingenue and had exactly the sort of modern lines I had been hoping for.

jul08_005

This fabulous jacket from Hucci has the classic, eternal chic of a Chanel jacket and the tank from MichaMi can dress up or dress down. I shot this at Digital Dragon – a great sim  with a predominantly black and white design.  This and the other Digital Dragon pics used Di’s Opera poses.

Things my father taught me

Using alternatives to PhotoShop - I edited this with LunaPic to emphasize the pouring rain.

I have many great memories of my father. I remember him singing and playing banjo, dancing with my mom and telling stories with a twinkle in his eye. I remember his voice and his laughter. One of my strongest and most powerful memories, though, is from a day he made me miserable and angry.

My dad and a picture of the woods above the river

I grew up in the country on the far side of a lake, deep in the woods. It was a 3.5 mile walk to the school bus, though I often shaved some off that by taking deer paths through the woods. That day it was raining and dad offered to give me a ride to the school bus stop. We had gone about a mile when a squirrel ran in front of the car and we could hear a slight thud as it was struck by the car. Dad pulled over to make sure it was dead, but it had run off into the woods.

Post Number 3269

Jun0412

My post title mojo has disappeared, lost in a long nap I accidentally took this afternoon. I was chilly and just crawled under the blanket to warm up and six hours later, I am rested but my synapses are firing at half-speed. This skirt from Nyu for faMESHed is not just running full-speed, it’s full-speed in the awesome lane. I love everything about it from the texture details on the front of the skirt, the tuxedo bow belt, the zipper up the back, the lining on the bottom inside to eliminate the alpha inside issue. the bodysuit from Milk Motion for Dressing Room Blue seemed made for it with its sexy but refined styling.

The pictures are shot at Memento Mori though I turned glow off in the debug settings. It’s so well done that I hate losing the details in the glow. I was excited to use Di’s Opera poses for the first time in a long time. I was sad when she closed her store awhile back, but she says she has more free time again to indulge in Second Life so she has just re-opened with a new release aptly named Redux.

Culture Shock MiaMai 2012

I was thrilled to be able to pair the mesh pants from MiaMai with the mesh tank from JANE. Finding pieces that work together, particularly from different stores, is often a chore. One of the great things about the top from Jane is that it offered a regular and wide hem. With the regular hem, the pants bled through in the back, but with the wide hem, the top stayed on the outside like it was supposed to.  This gave me all the pleasure in having mesh that moved and looked good from all angles.  The print pants from MiaMai are so rich and elegant – and your purchase supports the work of  Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The Softer Side of MiaMai

CApe Poge

When most people think of MiaMai, they think of Monica Outlander’s high fashion avant garde creations that flirt with androgyny. Produced with grand spectacle and presented with artistry and poetic insight, they are her hallmark. However, a truer hallmark, I think, is her great flixibility and range in design. She is not content to issue endless iterations of the same shapes and ideas, and truly does go back to the drawing board for new inspiration. Take this ultra-feminine and soft-edged flowing dress that she recently released at Fashion For Life. It is the antithesis of the sharply defined, hard-edged androgynous designs and yet, there are distinct MiaMai details such as the lush peacock feather collar that make it a cohesive element in her body of work.

Chantkare Giftables

Chantkare Leo

Let me just start by confessing that I hate Marketplace. I don’t dislike it. I hate it. I don’t use it for myself, but have thought it was an acceptable option for gift-giving, but I have changed my mind. After more than L1000 in presents were not delivered and the responsible store owners did nothing, did not even respond, I have decided that all my future gifting will be things that I can purchase in-wolrd, put in a nice box and hand over in person. I will also still use in-world gift vendors, but Marketplace is simply not an option for gifting until its delivery system becomes much more reliable. So, I thought I might spend some time highlighting a few stores where you can purchase gifts in advance of Valentine’s Day. Yesterday I highlighted some fabulous jewelry from Donna Flora, but sometimes you might want to give some clothing – and Chantkare is a great place to start. Most, though not all, of the items at Chantkare are transferrable. Be sure to check permissions before purchasing though since items with resize scripts are no trans.
