Any blogger challenges, not just IOF challenges

Ahem, about that challenge, Lord Winter?

When Winter Jefferson challenged Gidge to style an outfit featuring Exile’s exuberant Zoe hair, she rose to the challenge and threw down the gauntlet. Well, it seems Lord Winter is too busy planning his upcoming nuptials to Tenshi Vielle to answer the challenge – but never fear, I decided to give it a go and flap that glove in Winter’s face a few times. After all, shouldn’t a challenger actually do the challenge, too? So, here it is: Exile’s Zoe. Yes, it’s a wild and hairy sort of challenge – literally. However, I found it was deceptively easy. You see, the hair may be wild and full of exuberance, but it’s expertly placed exuberance that somehow just didn’t seem to intersect nearly as much as I expected. I really did not have to do a lot of searching for poses that work.

I did, however, think it deserved somethind wild, so I raided a pants set from Chatkare for the top and paired it with the truly wild Feather Skirt from So Many Styles.

Exile's ZOE – The Gauntlet Has Been Thrown Down

posted by Gidge Uriza

I got an IM from Winter challenging me to style this hair – a new release at EXILE.

I expected a lot more CRAZY out of the style than I got when I TP’d into EXILE. It’s some big hair, with dreads and big ringlets and I liked it immediately because it’s long hair.

And I LOVE long hair. I also love the shades of blonde Kavar uses so that was pretty much a WIN as far as I was concerned. What I HATE is to SHOOT long hair.

I find that I don’t think twice about intersections and other annoying bits of hair here and there when I WEAR long hair, we all know it happens – just like we know that the texture can stretch and distort over ya bootie if you don’t wear a skirtshape with your system skirts. Continue reading

Now & Then

This is my newbie self and yes, I was fortunate. When I entered Second Life, one of the first people I met was an SL mentor named Lilien Jewell who took it upon herself to ensure that I didn’t look like a noob for long. My 3rd day in SL I purchased the RaC (now LAQ) skin Amy – that she helped me choose and had a decent shape. The white skirt is the second purchase I made in Second Life – after the skin. The swimsuit I got a day later. I thought I was so clever putting a skirt over my swimsuit.  The shoes were from Shiny Things. I think I was in SL six months before I knew there were more shoe stores than X3D (Digit Darkes), Shiny Things and Enkythings. This is me at about a month or so. It’s not my first hair which was Brittany from Bewitched, but I deleted that in an inventory purge long ago. You might note I had no jewelry. I really had none. It took me forever, it seems, to find jewelery stores that suited my taste. I searched for jewelry, but it was all too too too beauty pageant princess for me, so I just didn’t get any. From the first, I knew that I didn’t want bling. I also had no lashes. I didn’t even know they existed. I should add that I wore this outfit most of the time. It was my “go-to” outfit for the longest time.

My shape is shorter, with a larger waist and smaller breasts. My face is softer with more of a smile. I still don’t wear bling, and mixing and matching outfits is an everyday thing. I still wear that Mandy hair from Muism – though for this I am wearing a favorite from Amrita. The shoes are Maitreya which has become a favorite of mine for shoes. Back then, I might not have realized that I could wear my boots without the calf prims and would not have worn them because the calf prims intersect the pants. Now I wear jewelry almost all the time – and it’s my worst Second Life addiction.

Now and Then:The Three Gidges

It’s Sophia Harlow’s fault that I’m subjecting you to this……..but at one month shy of my third rezz day I thought I’d show you the three Gidges – at least the three major ones.  The problem is that there probably isn’t a “real Gidge” now as she wears tons of stuffs. But ah…..first year Gidge, 2007 Gidge – she was DOGMATIC about what she wore. I don’t know why………dear God.

Example – far left. This is how I looked at the end of my first day in SL. I didn’t adjust the clip on the pony tail bcse 2007 Gidge didn’t know how to do that either.  Everyone I knew shopped at Cake. Period. Hair and skin from Cake. The dress – I have no idea. There is a cryptic ND in the title of the dress so perhaps it’s from the Nyte and Day everyone talks about but I never went to. (maybe I did go?). I don’t know. My friend bought me shape hair skin and a dress on day one.

She also bought me an Okina. Those of you old enough to know what that is, may guffaw now. And no – I won’t show it to you.

Middle Gidge was still shopping at Cake but had acquired ALL of the green hair so moved on to blonde. And she’d discovered Eloh mods and realized how horrendous that first face was lol. I’m also wearing what I call the DRESS OF POWER from Coconut Ice, because it was the most expensive thing I’d ever bought – and it was also the only thing I ever bought that caused the opposite sex to notice me.  I am never the girl who gets the “want make sex?” offers. I should put that thing back on more often.

And last up, taller, less top-heavy Gidge with a far smaller ass no matter WHAT Winter says.  The shape I’ve finally settle on and that I’ve worn for actually over a year now and I’m wearing Pink Fuel Skin with some Maitreya hair that I believe it is a morale imperative for all fashion bloggers to own.  The dress is Musashi Do.  Want to see a designer get flustered and then frustrated? Give them shit about not sending you something they sent your blog parter……….only to learn that they in fact DID it to you – and it just went into the black hole while I was on bedrest………eeeeeeek. Ummmm- sorry? 🙂

PS – don’t give designers shit unless they are your friends. It makes them crabby. It makes them crabby if they are your friends too, but you can get away with it.

Three Little Things

Samsara Barzane does not mess around when issuing a challenge. While I have many favorite skins and hair style, shoes and lashes, I don’t think any one of them is a must have. I can wear a different skin, a different hairstyle and I know that someday, they will be supplanted by other favorites. However there are three things that even when I try something that is supposed to be better, I shrug and go back to these old faithful, tried and true items. The first is my Photosphere by Saeya Nyanda of Kyoot.  There are other studios, but this one lets me take shots from more angles, more adventurously.  The second is my Pose Pad Pro from Nyterave Studio. There are fancier ones – but they’re more complicated than I like. This is simple, but still full of features that I like/need. The last item is my Huddles EZ Animator Deluxe. In it, I have my favorite poses and my dances – it allows me to add dancers, select dances and works as an AO and so much more. I can’t imagine going to a dance party without it.

Ode-worthy

Hart Larsson’s long-awaited July from PXL Creations is launched today at the Skin Fair @ Vanity Universe and it’s worth the wait. This is the sort of skin that could move a poet to write an ode. It’s a masterful demonstration of how light and shadow highlight, define and create beautiful skin. It had me scrambling to recall a poem by Pablo Neruda called Ode to a Naked Beauty. Don’t get too excited, though, my photos are better suited to a poem called Ode to a Bathing Beauty. 🙂

The line of your back
separating you
falls away into paler regions
then surges
to the smooth hemispheres
of an apple,
and goes splitting
your loveliness
into two pillars
of burnt gold, pure alabaster,
to be lost in the twin clusters of your feet,
from which, once more, lifts and takes fire
the double tree of your symmetry:
flower of fire, open circle of candles,
swollen fruit raised
over the meeting of earth and ocean.

from Ode to a Naked Beauty by Pablo Neruda

Addictive Blossoms

Have you been to Digit Darkes‘ new build at Addictive? I first heard her talk about her plans at a taping of Fabulous Fashion TV and have been eagerly waiting for it ever since.  It’s a black and white sim build with lots of little hidden pleasures like a downed plane in a ravine – a fashionista’s downed plane going by the amount of makeup in the wreckage.  I was so excited to see the build that I didn’t think that the best manners would be to shoot my first outfit there with one of the Digit Darkes dresses I picked up while exploring. Instead, I shot what I was wearing and am going to show it to you anyway because it’s so delightful and very well made – the intrepidly short Tender Blossoms cheongsam from Musashi-Do.

Content Theft PSA – Keep Hope Alive

The Clara Bow Dress from Rebel Hope Designs

The Clara Bow Dress from Rebel Hope Designs

It was great seeing so many of you standing up against content theft with posts featuring some Rebel Hope Designs. It’s exciting to learn that Linden Lab acted quickly and effectively and have excluded the stolen content from SL. What that means is that when people who have the stolen content try to rez it, they cannot and they get a message the content is blacklisted.  You can read Rebel Hope’s statement on the SL Forums. Nonetheless, the scale of this theft and the assumption on the part of the thief that nothing would happen (an assumption fed by past events) and the development of even more effective theft technology has content creators concerned. They have started a the Step Up campaign and there will be a special edition of Fabulous Fashion TV on Monday that I encourage all of you to watch. If, like me, you will be at work then, you can watch it later on Itunes.   Please check the links and Angie Mornington’s blog for more info.

There's a Reason – For the Sunshine Skies

posted by Gidge Uriza

and there’s a reason that I’m feeling so high

must be the season when that love light shines all around us

So let your love flow…….like a mountain stream and let your love grow

with the smallest of dreams.

This one is for Rebel Hope and RH Engel.  This is my salute of respect for their creations and I hope that they remember that no matter what happens that is bad……..there is so much more good out there.

I hope everyone patronizes them in some way – not because you NEED something but as a gesture, that it doesn’t matter how much thieves copybot and steal – real customers will always exist, real customers will buy from you.

Our hearts are with you !

You Gotta Have Hope

This chic ensemble is one of the expansive galaxy of options available when you buy the Rebel Hope Tuxedo – available at Rebel Hope Designs. Yesterday, Rebel Hope was the target of the most brazen content theft I have ever seen. It has been well-covered in Shopping Cart Disco here and here and my goal is not to cover the incident but suggest a way we as a community can show solidarity with the creators and combat content theft.

I am asking fellow bloggers to showcase some of the wonderful Rebel Hope content – gorgeous clothing like this or the homes and furniture and to educate their readers to the fact that content theft hurts all of us. We all reach different readers, so the more that take a few paragraphs to educate their readers, the broader the outreach. Normally I would insert a cut here to shorten the length of this post on the feed. Please indulge my longer post on the feed for this important issue.

The Juliet Boots from A-Bomb are smoking hot with the lovely tuxedo. I could have worn pants...but honestly, is this not the hottest tux in the West?

Content theft is a constant worry for SL creators whose defensive tactics are constantly trumped by new viewers and stratagems for copying content.  Thankfully, many SL residents are sympathetic and disapprove of content theft and actively help by alerting creators to incidents of theft they encounter. Sadly, though, some residents just see it as an opportunity to enjoy free or cheap content and brazenly wear their stolen content or add anti-inspect shields to hide their shame. What they fail to understand is that stolen content affects us all negatively – that those bargains have a cost they do not perceive.

The hair is from Elle F - by Launa Fauna, who makes Chai skins. It's the perfect tuxedo hair.

What are the costs? Here’s just a few.

  1. There’s a few stores that employ irritating anti-theft stuff such as click to prove you’re real dialog boxes, that little bit of chat spam telling copybot to quit, etc. These are minor annoyances, but they slow down and lag our SL experience.
  2. We all know one or two stores that have closed after being copybotted, discouraged by not only the theft of their hard work, but by the complacency of Linden Labs and the SL community. This means less content and less innovation.
  3. Costlier products as store owners build into their prices the anticipated early loss of revenue when their products are ripped.
  4. The annoying presence  and hideous lag of anti-inspection devices that people who buy from thieves use to hide their complicity with thieves.
  5. Suspicion and distrust by store owners who employ tactics to fight theft that impinge on all of us.
  6. Ban lists that can be misused and abused and even, it seems, hacked.
  7. Long preachy posts like this one

Dutch Touch CLeO - what a gorgeous face!!!

So, now that we acknowledge that we all pay a price for content theft, what can we do to stop it. First, we can never buy stolen content.  Of course, it’s hard to know sometimes if something is stolen, but there’s one neon-bright clue we can follow. If the prices are unrealistic and too good to be true, it’s probably stolen.  If someone hands you a free box of hundreds of high quality, contemporary hair styles, it’s probably stolen. Don’t accept it, don’t buy it. Secondly, many newcomers and folks who don’t read blogs are unaware of the problem, so we can tell our friends. If you see someone wearing stolen content, let them know – but in a respectful, nonjudgmental way. Assume they purchased it in innocence and judge their complicity by their reaction to your information. Third, if you see stolen content, send a snapshot and slurl to the creator of the original content so s/he can address it. Sometimes what may appear to be stolen is not, so I would not rush to announce it from the hilltops and instead leave it to the creator to lead the charge. The biggest thing we can do though, is be responsible for our own actions and not wear stolen content.

Sui Generis Mari shape shown in three moods.

Last but not least, we can all take a strong step against this sort of brazen and shameless theft that was done solely to inflict personal harm by each and everyone of us making a purchase of the real thing and going to Wildwood and supporting Rebel Hope and  RH Engel. This might help sustain them while the recover their business and build new content and also lift their spirits which have taken a hard blow.
