Do Androids Dream of Electric Shopping Carts?

I dreamed I went to Shopping Cart Heaven and woke up in Utopia03 – another of the five World Expo islands. This island is an art installation by Bryn Oh and is called no colour. Similar to the other installations in the series – that name is at once extremely fitting and extremely ironic. The android dreams of the shopping carts are of metamorphosis into the natural and so – with time shifts – the sim comes alive with lysergic-laced dreams of color as the shopping carts morph into fantastical plants and trees.  Alas, their dreams are short and they wake up again to their colorless existence. However, I think there is more beauty in their natural state of detritic decay than in their exuberantly colorful fantasies.

The sim’s monotonal color scheme is a perfect setting for the limited tones in the top and skirt I wore – and the tribal stamp print fabric is echoed in the terrain textures.  Both the top and skirt are from Lelutka – though not produced as a set. The construction of the top is amazing. For example, the main bodice color is achieved by layering the printed texture sculpt with a sheer blue sculpt over it – giving the color depth and luster that is only achieved through the interplay of two separate textures. The details such as the skirt belt and rivets are also extremely well made and add stunning elements of design and precision.

There Aren't Enough Squeegees In The World

posted by Gidge Uriza

As a former resident of the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico I’ve watched in horror since the Deepwater Horizon exploded.  Were it not for the loss of life, both human and sea creatures, it’d be comic. With no plan and no quick resolution available, we have continued daily to watch the mess unfold and to listen on the radio to the communities of the Gulf beg us to please come spend our tourist dollars there.

There are jokes about the Exxon Valdez. I guess some day there will be jokes about this. I can’t imagine them, but they will exist. Maybe this all won’t seem so bad by then. I doubt it.

We lack the alchemy to reverse what has happened, and the science to swoop in and just STOP The leak. Continue reading

Inis Caiseal

It’s so easy to find beauty in Second Life – and not just in fashion, but in the landscapes, the art, the music and the friendships. If you look for beauty, you will find it. If you look for wonder, you will find it. It’s that kind of seek and you shall find sort of place. Inis Caiseal is one of three contiguous sims that make up the Alchemy Immortalis archipelago.  Despite knowing it makes me sound inane, I have to confess I love the word archipelago. It has such a funky sound to it. Raise your hands if you like how some words sound irrespective of their meaning!

OKay, to the business at hand – showing off the gorgeous new jacket from L’Abel.  More accurately, it’s part of a suit that includes some quilted knee-length shorts. I am not a great lover of shorts or quilted bottoms of any sort, but adore the structure of the jacket. This is a must have in every color – it’s beautifully formed and carefully made and I love it! The only thing that would make it more perfect is to have the option of a prim for the jacket’s bottom in addition to the system skirt. Then it could be worn with system skirts or with pants. Flexibility is always a win in my book.

Another Utopia

This outfit began with the pants from Lelutka that are the perfect mix of fashionable, funky and fun. I love them. They come in several prints and I want all of them but will have to content myself with a couple pair. In typical SL serendipity, I received a lovely fatpack of new tops from eha and their design with the loose, flowing layers is a perfect complement to the pants.

After I finished styling this outfit I knew I had to shoot it at Utopia02 – no energy – by Glyph Graves.  I will paste a short clip from the notecard you can request when you arrive there:

Entropy by Glyph Graves

This is a full sim installation that was created for the Shanghai Expo…There are four statues situated on hills at the source of the rivers. The rivers flow in to a central basin. There is a tree near the centre. Whispering into the tree will start the entropy in the system. The statues will melt/fragment change shape and texture. All the sculptures will freeze and change colour. The statue fragments will flow along the rivers to the central basin where the will assume a entropic pattern swirling. The butterflies near the tree will flutter to the ground. don’t forget to whisper again to restore the state…

Eleganza

Shai Delacroix is back in a big way. After taking a short hiatus from designing and producing new clothing, she has released three new pieces in the last month. In contrast to the bright summery swimsuit and sundress I blogged about the other day, this newest release is all about classical elegance. Reminiscent of Grecian gowns, her new Eleganza is all about elegance in form. The color of the cocoa one made me think of another of the Utopia World Expo sims – Utopia01 – no love.

Utopia01 is a beautiful sim with the rich turquoise landscape. It requires patience as it’s no fly and the walk way appears in front of you as you move through it – so don’t walk to fast or you will fall in the water. To see some other people’s visions of the sim, there’s a nice selection of photos at KoinUp.

Oil & Water

Casa del Shai Tye-Die Bikini

When two people have a personality conflict that seems intractable, we say, “Like oil and water, they don’t mix.” That expression in one form or another is so old we don’t know its origins. However, its essential truth has become painfully obvious over the last two months since the Gulf spill began.  While one attempt after another fails, scientists and DIY inventors have made a cottage industry of uploading ideas to youtube to help the clean up. From clever to whimsical to crazy, those ideas are profoundly human. People are eager to do something because that’s what humans do.  For good or ill, it’s part of what makes us human.

Casa del Shai Capricciosa Dress

Not all of us can, or should, take a boat out on the Gulf and try to rescue birds and sea turtles. Still we want to do something. One thing we can do is help support cleanup efforts by established conservationist organizations with experience in ecological restoration.  Sadly, it’s been more difficult than usual to get support for those efforts because this disaster is man-made and has a villain who is expected to pay for the clean-up – assuming they don’t decide to file for bankruptcy reorganization. The idea that BP will pay for it all ignores that these groups are not waiting around for BP’s permission to begin wildlife rescue. They are already doing the work.

Trubble In Mind

Trubble in Mind.
I’m blue,
but I won’t be blue always.
Sun is gonna shine in my backdoor someday.

Did I ever pretend to be above bad puns and shallow word play? No, I did not. Of course, the entire song is a heartbreakingly sad song expressing deep despair – nothing like the light, romantic emotions generated by the lovely, colorful Pandora dress from Tracy Rubble of Trubble, the store name that always sends my brain running down Tin Pun Alley.

Still There

The new Times Square Tribal dress from Shiki struck me as another that dress that would benefit from the wild, lonely setting of Marcus Inkpen’s build on Utopia 4, so I flew over to another corner of the sim for a few shots of this extraordinary dress and that extraordinary little island.

There’s something really haunting about how this island rises with the stairs to the house and how the island is anchored by that chain. There’s also a certain tension with the laws of physics suggesting its imminent collapse. Add to that how from this angle, the arching stairs seem almost like the island’s vertebrae leading to its head – in the form of the house and you can’t help but think that the chain is restraining the dragon that is the island.

Quelle Surprise

Have you ever been to Marcus Inkpen’s amazing build on the Utopia 4 sim? My pictures cannot hope to do it justice, but for the sheer joy of great photography, take a quick look at this gallery of extraordinary photos of an extraordinary build. When I unpacked this avant garde dress from dojo, I knew I wanted to shoot this dramatic dress on that dramatic sim. Of course, the dress is not very visible in the dark lighting of this photo. I figured you would might enjoy the drama since the dress is called Petite Surprise.

Another Glance

There’s a new shopping sim in town. Now I know that happens all the time, but this one has a great build and a fabulous combination of familiar and popular brands with new and unknown to me fresh discoveries. Of course, I am not so conceited as to think that everything new to me at the new Glance Style sim is new to everyone – but nonetheless, I love the combination of new and established – of discovery and reliability.  The sim opens today at 1 PM and there are some opening day gifts such as the hair I am wearing – so do try to get there.
