I’m Torn About Paying It Forward

Torn Difference

Gozii - a dress from Torn. Torn is a new store that opened in April featuring mesh clothing in a rainbow of colors and prints.

Mostly I am torn because I chose to feature a dress from Torn, a mesh clothing boutique owned by Torn Difference, but it’s not just a play on words. You know I am a sucker for community-building projects, so Harlow Heslop’s Pay It Forward Project has a lot of appeal for me. In an ideal world, it would have developed organically and not in response to conflict, but in the real world, conflict is the heat that makes the seeds of change sprout. There is one way in which I would love there to be a sea change in the blogging world and if this helps bring it about, I will be thrilled.

Nails from WTG and bracelets from Je Suis continue the black and white theme.

In my opinion, too many see blogging as a zero-sum game, as though the traffic that goes to a competitor’s blog is traffic that won’t go to one’s own. In truth, fashion blogging is more like Starbucks. When Starbucks first began opening their stores all across America, there was a lot of griping about it killing the small local coffeehouses. The reality is, though, that a Starbucks opening up near a local coffeehouse is often the best thing that happens to them. Starbucks is not just selling coffee, it’s converting people to the idea of high-end, specialty coffee and amplifying the market.

Grasshopper, Grasshopper!

mar16_003

Today is the day many of the faithful of Minnesota celebrate by wearing purple in honor of St. Urho who famously saved the grape harvest of Finland by uttering the phrase “Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen” (roughly translated: “Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!”) My family has made the pilgrimage to Menagha to see the famous statue of Saint Urho.

Seek and Ye Shall Find

Oct15_020

Seek and ye shall find;
knock and the door shall be open;
ask and it shall be given
and the love come a trickling down.

That was one of my favorite childhood songs was from a decrepit album of my sisters called The Womenfolk. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of them. No one’s heard of them. Incredibly, though, I found the song by them on YouTube. It was an old album and it appealed to my five year old sensibilities with some nonsense songs sprinkled in with traditional folk songs. I played it over and over until it was worn out. Despite its religious theme, it still appeals to me and when I find myself feeling impatient and frustrated, I will still sing the chorus to remind myself that patience is virtue worth holding onto hard and fast. Certainly a good theme song for hunts.

Since it was from a hunt, I decided to shoot at Hide and Seek. It’s a lovely sim, though I had to turn my music off because every step seems to put me in a different music parcel. It was very weird musically.

A few years ago, Gidge and I did a couple hunts of 100 stores or so. Funny thing, though, I never unpacked the items and they sat in a folder in my inventory reminding me that hunts are not for me. There’s a couple reasons for this. Once the hunt is over, I don’t want to blog the items since I try to avoid blogging things that readers won’t be able to get for themselves if they wish. I make a few exceptions for some gloves and leggings that I will hold onto forever. People don’t just read today’s post, but half the views each day are from posts from long ago and far away. The second reason is that events are so very well covered in the blogs. There are several blogs that focus heavily on sales and hunts such as The SL Circadian, Seraphim,  and Shopping Cart Disco. But then I saw this jacket!

Hey, did I mention there was a sale at Truth District?

Oct08_005

I may have mentioned this already, but there’s a sale at Truth District with fabulous stores selling fabulous clothes for a fabulous 50% off. You have to be a Truth District Update Group member to go to the sim and membership is L250, which the savings on two purchases will offset. I have seen many of the sales items and Gidge and I have shown some of them off. There really are some great finds – among them this fabulous off-the-shoulder dress from DCNY. I love the soft teal and the romantic print and the shoulder and arm prims hang together beautifully in most poses, so long as I don’t frantically wave my hand in class like Alex Dunphy.

Man, I Feel Like A Woman

So I was bored a few days ago, before the SICK really took hold and knocked me into the RL bed. I went wandering and traipsed through THE ICING.
First of all, THE ICING is officially a store I LOVE HARD. And unlike some places, the freebie wardrobe closet in the store isn’t full of crap I’d never wear (pro-tip I don’t want a tee with your store logo). I had the other two dresses but for some reason this Pizzicato Poppies is new or NEW TO ME.
Which is just as good. Continue reading

Fashion For Life – Shiki Designs

mar13_003

Shinichi Mathy of Shiki Designs always makes interesting clothes with a singular element that takes them in an unpredictable direction. For example, the addition of fur at the shoulders adds quirky interest to this lovely alencon lace dress. Shinichi is just one of the many Japanese designers who have generously participated in the Fashion For Life show.

I find myself often thinking about those Second Life friends and acquaintances in Japan and wondering how they are doing. Shinichi’s associate reports that he is fine, which is great news. So far, everyone seems to be doing okay. I find myself thinking about “Everything In Its Path” a book about the aftermath of the Buffalo Creek flood. The author explains with great compassion about the ways natural disaster traumatizes in ways that are not first seen – and most especially through loss of community. The evacuation, the loss of neighbors, habits, of the everyday. It is an incredible book and you can even read the author’s findings in a document downloadable from FEMA. While the ongoing crisis captures our attention now, especially since the damage keeps escalating with nuclear plants and more aftershocks, we should all know that it will take a long, long time to recover a sense of normality again.

I took the photos at the Fashion For Life event. I cannot encourage you enough to go and see these builds. They are just so amazing. I love seeing how the builders translate the different photographers’ aesthetics to architecture and landscaping. It really is a tour de force and you should not deprive yourself of the experience.
