IFW10: White on White on White

One of the exciting finds at IFW10 was Purple Moon’s Uma gown that includes wildly avant garde white hair. That inspired me to multiply the white elements to the ultimate degree. Not only are the clothing and accessories white, but the skin is porcelain, but trumping all that, I used Dare’s White poses. Now, I confess I chose them for the conceit of a multiplicity of White, but also because they are highly editorial and would add to that sensibility for the shoot.

I hopped on over to The Quiet – and found a quiet corner. The starkness of the landscape adds a dramatic element that always draws me in.

Expectations 5 – Ritzy Expectations

What to wear to the Ritz? If Sn@tch doesn’t come to mind, your letting yourself get boxed into categories that stifle, rather than catalog. For this Grand Entrance, I mixed two elements from Sn@tch with contemporary accessories that combine for an outfit perfect for a 21st century remake of High Society.  I was thinking High Society, not Philadelphia Story – so the hair is a lovely ponytail from Lamb.

Expectations 4:What Do You Expect From This Sn@tch?

posted by Gidge Uriza

There seems to be some misunderstanding that the only people who can find clothes at Sn@tch are goth queens and those who give much props to THEIR $I$STAHS or other such nonsense in their profiles. It seems that perhaps my Barbie sisters aren’t aware of the gorgeous treasure trove to be found – and for awesome prices.

Granted, if I’m looking for something festive and gothy I do run to Sn@tch…..but to only shop there for that kind of look would be to miss some absolutely stunning pieces that no girly girl should be missing out on.

Such as……….THIS DRESS! Continue reading

Expectations 3 – High Expectations

This third look at how Sn@tch clothing passes beyond the Alternative label explores a fun mash-up that very editorial and high fashion. The basis is the Swirl & Swing outfit – a top and skirt outfit. I used just the skirt, though, opting to finally try out that Boudoir Black Lace Bodysuit that has been tempting me for the past month.

You could search the grid for a year and not find a better complement to the Boudoir bodysuit than Sn@tch’s fabulous Swirl and Swing skirt in black. The soft voile and lace over the opaque sculpty skirt has the perfect contrast to the lace so that it does not get lost – but also does not overwhelm. Sure a plain black skirt could work, but this is more interesting and more exciting. I love the William Morris-inspired print contrasting with the more baroque lace.

Expectations 2

The Second in a series of posts illustrating why the label Alternative is too tight a fit for Sn@tch designs. The point of the series is not that the label is inaccurate or insulting – just that Sn@tch has a wider range of clothing than will fit in that label. For example, for this outfit, you could, if you like, pull out the Retro or Vintage label.

If you spend more than 10 minutes at Sn@tch, you will discover that Ivey has a thing for floral prints. A lot of the time you will see that love expressed in rich floral brocades that can be classified as Gothic – depending on how they are styled. On the other hand, there are some occasional flashes of pure romanticism such as this recent release of summer sun dresses in the loveliest of French floral prints.

Expectations

Every once in awhile someone produces a list of The Best of  SL Merchants in different categories. For consumers, these lists can be useful lists of new places to check out and a source for ideas of where to look, but there is the downside of short-circuiting you own exploration and the fun of finding new and unique stores. For retailers, the lists are a great boost in building traffic and brand recognition, but there is also a downside of getting pigeon-holed. That certainly has happened with Sn@tch – a store that is often labeled Punk, Goth, Grunge or whatever is the au courant label for Alternative clothing. The category fits, but too tightly – and ignores the wonderful range of mainstream separates and high fashion outfits that you can find at Sn@tch. I thought I might spend a few days highlighting how Sn@tch is much more than the label and do my small part to stretch expectations.

Consider this Uptown outfit from Sn@tch. Yes, with the right accessories, hair and makeup, it could look alternative.  However, it’s a beautifully coordinated and completely mainstream sweater and skirt that is perfectly at home in a museum, a fundraiser or most any event short of a formal ball. It’s simply beautifully done.

Patriotism By Guest Stylist Kavar Cleanslate

While joking on PLURK yesterday about the USA FLAG Thongs and PASTIES or whatever the hell it is offending everyone for the 4th of July this year, Kavar Cleanslate (EXILE Creator) suggested I post in Red Hair, Blue Jeans, and topless – as my appropriate July 4 salute to the U.S. Independence Day. Butterflies are Free

posted by Gidge Uriza

When I think of the east end lights, muggy nights
the curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna lord you really shoulda been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And It’s One More Beer and I don’t hear you ANYMORE
We’ve all gone crazy lately
My friends have been rolling ’round the basement floor

Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a Butterfly
And Butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

I’m strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
I’m four o-clock in the morning dammit
listen to me good……..

I’m a butterfly. …….
