Gasqhe: the Joy of Discovery

Gasqhe Wen

One of the joys of events like Modavia Fashion Directory is the discovery of new designers and new stores and sometimes, as in the case of Karija Azalee, whose collection for Gasqhe blew me away. I was struck by the originality and the unique vision of her collection so planned to check out her store and saw no info in her picks. I im’ed to suggest she put her LM in her picks and she confess she didn’t have a store yet, but would in the near future. In the interim, she has a boutique booth at Moravia. The booths will stay open for two months, so there’s plenty of time for you to get there.

Gasqhe Jils

I think I compared her textures as Cezanne on Acid. They have the muted, soft look of watercolors. This dress, Jils, makes me think of a bed if irises. Irises were my mom’s favorite flower and they always find a soft spot in my heart.

Chantkare Delight for Modavia Fashion Week

Applonia Criss of Chantkare knows prints and can match them better than anyone.  She has a bold palette and paints with an assertive, confident brush. This gorgeous skirt and top are perhaps the most subdued in her collection for Modavia Fashion Week, but the quiet details won my heart. I love the skirt sculpt with the the ribbon edging and trim and the gentle gathers. And green is my favorite color!

Gabriel Cherie @ Modavia Fashion Week

I enjoyed the show from Gabriel for Modavia Fashion Week. It featured menswear and womenswear. The womenswear was dominated by sculpted little cocktail dresses like this one in different colors. I have some great jackets from Gabriel, but these new cocktail dresses are a move in a more frivolous direction and I love it.

Anubis Mouche @ Modavia Fashion Week

Anubis Style has a bright, bold floral print that is full of exciting fashion details from the S-curve zipper to the yellow dashes down the legs, from the fingerless cerise gloves to the striped contrasting shoulder pads, this is an outfit to dazzle. One thing to note, the skirt of this dress is not a pencil skirt and is supposed to rest off the body. That means that switching to a skirt shape could actually exaggerate the silhouette and a regular shape will look more natural.

Did I mention that Ava and Barbara Kungler frequently take their inspiration from their native Brazil, drawing color, form and substance from the flora and fauna. This gown from their fall collection released at Modavia Fashion Week yesterday is a perfect example of that. Using a bird and foliage print could so very easily look old-fashioned and kitsch, but not with the modern sensibility of Kunglers.

MFW01_040

One of the reasons I love Kunglers is their use of bold prints and the way they incorporate the organic inspirations of their Brazil into their designs. Their fall collection for Modavia Fashion Week is true to their history while remaining fresh by incorporating new silhouettes. It’s a fabulous collection of separates and signature pieces such as this stunning coat – which I wore as a coat dress. While this is gold, not green the color of hope, for some reason it made me think of a favorite song a former colleague used to play a lot – Spyro Gyro by Jorge Ben Jor. I think it is the vegetal inspiration that brought zygotes and gametes to mind.

Continuing with the funk meets fashion collection from Bliss Couture, I have fabulously stylized low-rise denim jeans with bell bottoms so side you can hide the 1970’s in them.  Add the puffy fake fur jacket and gauntlets and you can hide a good share of the 60’s as well. She’s giving us more of what we’re funking for.

So wide can’t get around it
So low you can’t get under it.
One nation under a groove.

The Bliss Couture collection is a fabulous mix of separates to mix and match. I said before, it’s a great combination of fashion and funk. There’s lots of exposure in this collection but “Funk not only moves, it can re-move.

The desired effect is what you get
When you improve your Interplanetary Funksmanship.

Renewal

Good art looks new because the artist has recombined something old to make something better. (Darby Bannard)

Mami Jewell’s main store, Azul, was closed for for a few weeks in August while she rebuilt her store. Celebrating the reopening of her store with its new look, Mami applied this aphorism quite literally to her work. She has created 45 limited release gowns from her collection in special colors that will be available only during the month of September. This is Dailey, one of the new, limited release color gowns.

I love the gorgeous rosy-mauve coloring in this dress. It’s so lovely against my skin and when overlaid by the yards of black lace, it’s stunning. The asymmetrical bodice is so lovely and elevates the dress to a new level.
