The Burlington Northern Don't Stop Here Anymore

mar31_005
As soon as I played this pose animation from Status, I was reminded of countless weekend afternoons spent playing with my nieces down in the pasture. We would ride horses or walk down to Ruffy Brook and after semi-swimming (the deepest spot was about 4 feet deep) we would walk the rails. There was a railroad trestle that crossed a deep ravine over the brook and we would put our ears down and listen for trains. If we heard nothing, we would walk across the trestle. It was always exciting because you could see through the railroad ties and could scare yourself with thoughts of stepping wrong and having one leg fall through the ties or with thoughts of oncoming trains or even of slipping off the rails and falling down into the ravine. Of course, none of those things ever happened. As we got older, we got bolder and would ride horse across the trestle which goes to show that a well-trained horse can be just as idiotic as the person riding him.

Sadly, my nieces children won’t get that same visceral thrill of imminent, but unlikely, death by train as Burlington Northern closed that line. Of course, that makes me think of Jean Richie’s mournful song, The L&N Don’t Stop Here Anymore, that tells how the loss of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad closed the mines and impoverished the people of Hazard, Kentucky. When the Burlington Northern shut down jobs were lost throughout the northern counties of Minnesota. Thanks to the stimulus, unemployment is at a 10 year low of 17%. I know that’s much higher than most places but it was near 30% when I still lived there. It sounds dire, but country folk have more ways to make do than people in cities. And to be completely honest, wild asparagus is much tastier than regular asparagus.

Never thought I’d live to lean to love the coaldust
Never thought I’d pray to hear those temples roar
But God I wish the grass would turn to money
And then them greenbacks would fill my pockets once more
I was born and raised at the mouth of the Hazard Holler
Where the coal cars rolled and rumbled past my door
But now they stand in a rusty road of all empties
Because the L & N don’t stop here anymore

Does This Make My Ass Look Fat?

mar23_004
Possibly one of the most dangerous questions in history, Second Life fashionistas know that system skirts can prompt the question “does this make my ass look fat?” For whatever technical computer-y reason, system skirts seem to float above the body mesh, creating what Phaedra of Real Housewives of Atlanta calls donkey booty. You can prevent donkey booty with a skirt shape. There’s some resistance to this idea, I think folks feel it’s too much work, but really, it’s a short and easy one-time effort.

Here you can see that with my regular shape, there is a bit of a donkey booty. The best made system skirt in the world will give you a bit of a donkey booty unless you already have a very small bottom. Of course, the larger your bottom, the more donkey in the donkey butt there will be. So, you can see there’s reason for making a skirt shape and saving it in your inventory so you have it on hand for all future system skirts.

Carmen Was a Hussy

mar19_007

I am wearing the Carmen dress from Kunglers for Fashion For Life. It’s clear it’s inspiration comes from the fiery Carmen of Bizet’s opera. Carmen is an opera filled with catchy tunes that you will find yourself humming for days. The music is beautiful and makes it easy to forget what a misogynistic story it is. It’s all too familiar. A man who cannot accept that the woman he loves does not love him decides that if he can’t have her, no one will, and murders her. What’s infuriating is that he’s the hero and she’s the villain. And it’s a comedy. Still, I love the music and never miss a chance to see it. Carmen is a free spirit with a lively wit and insouciant spirit who easily captures men’s hearts. She is someone who wants what she wants and doesn’t settle for less. Sure, she was a hussy, but only because that’s how our society stigmatizes women who won’t settle.

Scarecrows & Navajos

feb06_014

I have no words of wisdom about scarecrows or Navajos, but Navajo is the name given to this luscious top from Peqe and, well, there is a scarecrow in the photo. I just liked the sound of the two words together. The top is really luscious, isn’t it?

A Weekend In The Country

I decided to take a weekend in the country just to relax and rest. So after going horseback riding and breathing the fresh air and enjoying the scenery and the like (that’s a lot of ANDS)….I was at a loss as to what to do. Continue reading

Cuddly Cozy Chic

jan20_007

What’s soft, snuggly and so-so chic? My answer is the lovely fur poncho from Lelutka. Called Rea, it’s Rea-lly perfect for a chilly walk at Roche, the lovely sim where I shot the pictures.

jan20_011

The dress is equally perfect for the chilly weather, a lovely striped sweater dress from A-Bomb called Cold Embrace. Isn’t it fun how A-Bomb names all their outfits after song titles?

Lost in your cold embrace
I’ll perceive your light
Burning my life inside
You will see my fire fade away

I Love Prints

jan07_004

I love prints, the brighter, the bolder, the better. I wonder if my mother was frightened by a magpie when she was pregnant, the way I gravitate toward the bright, bold and beautiful. Of course, this print dress from Kungler’s can’t be called gaudy, because there’s restraint and balance keeping that in check, but it sure is bright and bold, isn’t it?

Jewelry Fair Favorites: Kunglers

oct07_003

I have been sort of disconnected lately what with so many First Life distractions, that the first I realized that Jewelry Fair was on its way was when I received the new releases from Kunglers Extra. And wow oh wow oh wow! I loved the Orquidea sets they made earlier but they outdid themselves with the new colors including this fabulous gold set that is a perfect addition to wear with the gorgeous Dana dress from Baiastice’s Fall Collection.

Guest Stylist Trixie Bumbo

oct02_004.jpg

Trixie Bumbo gamely volunteered for a shoot as guest stylist last weekend. I asked her to share a comment about her outfit and she said, “When Cajsa and Gidge asked me to be a guest stylist I must have tried about a thousand outfit combinations trying to find something that felt right. Finally I gave up and went with my “go to” outfit. I love the soft, warm textures, graceful lines and subtle sexiness of this dress. It goes almost anywhere – it always works.” The dress is called Desiree and is from Kunglers.

Something about it made me think of classical togas – even though it is a collared shirtwaist – so I decided to shoot it at the ruins at The Looking Glass. While exploring after the shoot, I discovered that the ruins are a set piece that you can purchase there on the sim.

Loving Virtual Decay

sep27_017.jpg

One of my favorite places to shoot pictures is Virtual Decay with its grungy urban verisimilitude. It’s just such detailed and high quality build in terms of details. When I tried on these recent releases from Kunglers for Modavia Fashion Week (yes, I know it’s past, but there were too many releases that week to even show a tenth of them) I saw that same high quality detail, particularly in the fabulous Soraia Jacket.
