Seasons in the Sun

The dry season has begun. After 24 straight days of rain, this week has been an explosion of warm and sunny days that lift the spirits. On the way to work, an embankment along the road was a riot of roses – fifty or more bushes blazing with blooms in red and white. Our rainy season seems to be ending a month early, but I won’t complain. It’s been a long, cold and wet winter. Just in time for the sun, this lovely dress from EMO-tions fell to earth. With loads of lace and an empire waist, it’s styled for romance and what could be more romantic than a walk on the beach?

Ode on a Filigree Hat

The Sakura hat from Boudoir inspired a bit of poetic license.

O Chapeau shape!  Chic attitude! with strings
Of dogwood and  black threads like iron wrought,
With forest branches and metaphoric wings
Thou, hatly form, dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: thou filigree hat!
When pixel dust shall this fashion waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other blogs
Than ours, a friend to fashion, to whom thou say’st,
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty,” – that is that
and all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

with profuse apologies to John Keats

Shiki Six

Shiki Designs released ten fun summer dresses. Gidge and I showed you two in the post highlighting our new shoes from A-Bomb. Here are six more, showing all the lovely floral prints and three of the five colors of the lace dresses – all but gren and blue. With them I wore the lovely new Victorian Ankle Boots from Juicy in appropriately juicy fruit colors.

Toto, We're Not In Woodstock Anymore

MiaMai recently released bell bottoms that Janis Joplin would have loved and you will see what I mean after the cut, but first, a moment of silence for the sheer chicawesomesaucegorgeousness that is this Keyn Jacket from MiaMai. [moment of silence] I have shown you the silver version already, but the Candy version deserves its own space. This jacket is more Prince than Janice – more fashion forward and chic than boho – and with it, the jeans take on a totally modern mood.

Z

When the Kungler sisters recently sent promotional copies of their two newest dresses Alfa and Zeta – my mind went to the alphabet – as in A to Z – and thought how clever, they sent everything from A to Z. And that’s true, but then I remembered that in the Greek alphabet everything would be from Alpha to Omega and Zeta is actually only the 6th letter. I guess it was not a pun after all. Still, I like the name. Besides, Z is a funky letter, the bane or the blessing of Scrabble players everywhere, depending on whether they are fanatical like my mother was. She memorized all the words ending and starting with Z. She also memorized every Q word that didn’t need a U. Like I said, fanatical.  She kept a notebook with the final score of all games – to establish a handicapping system so that every game was competitive. Is it bragging to say I had to spot her? I didn’t memorize any special words, my ploy was lots of two letter or three letter words that double counted many ways. It irked her so much that I would get more points with axe than she would with ziggurat, which begins with Z and brings up back to Zeta – a gorgeous dress that I had to show you.

Like a flower

Like a flower waiting to bloom
Like a lightbulb in a dark room
I’m just sitting here waiting for you
To come home and turn me on

The quiet beauty of Norah Jones’ Turn Me On is a perfect accompaniment to Baiastice’s Comme des fleurs (Like the flowers) not just in literal terms, but also in the soft romanticism they both evoke. From the pale blush pink of the dress to the quiet bell-like notes of the song – this is quiet, sure and profound romanticism at work.

The Long and the Short of It

Sonatta Morales is a genius at making gorgeous gowns that you can picture all the great divas wearing. When I am in her store looking at the clothing, I am seeing Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Clara Bow – and the rest of the pantheon of glamor and talent. This *8* Jewel gown is certainly one of those fit for a diva – but unlike a RL gown, this one comes in long and short versions with a quick adding of a prim or three.
