What's in a name?

Juliet says, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Well, that’s true, certainly, as far as roses go. But if you were offered sight unseen to sniff a rose or a skunkweed, which would you choose? Names carry social and cultural cues which is why there’s so many ridiculous names of heroes in historical romance novels and why few people today name their daughter Ethel or Velma.  So, I am wondering why this sexy little mini-dress is named Clyde?  Sometimes I am curious how things get named. Perhaps it’s after the  Clyde Barrow, the romanticized bank robber of Bonnie & Clyde? Well, I don’t have to know to wear it and that which we call Clyde by any other name would look as sexy.

A 21st Century Tartan

Iota Ultsch of Tres Jolie sent out a lovely group gift for Valentine’s Day – this red tartan dress. I wore this dancing yesterday and it  was a lovely dress for dancing – the sculptie skirt being full enough that it never got wonky. It’s a see to believe kind of dress with a semi-sheer almost glassine texture that is a very contemporary almost industrial plaid. She also makes it in other colors on sale in her store. I love the way she creates textures from unusual sources. For example, her city grid dress texture is made from a photo of tire tracks on a sidewalk.

Happy Valentine's Day

I am not feeling full of the hearts and flowers sentimentality of Valentine’s Day this year, but I do recognize that it always inspires a lot of fun and creative designs and most importantly, an excuse to party. I have not been feeling too well this week so I  have not stayed online long enough to do anything more than shoot some pictures. So no partying for me, but if I had been in the mood for a party last night, I would definitely have worn this dress.

Hark! Hark!

Well, I am probably not singing at heaven’s gate, but I am wearing a heavenly dress from Lark, so I don’t mind stealing a phrase from Shakespeare. Hark, hark, the Lark dress is a great find and in a gorgeous plaid.  For added cuteness it comes with a pocket prims and  a pose hud with hands in pockets posing.

Enchantment

Sometimes there is a dress that enchants me. It is so new, so breathtakingly fresh that I just have to play and find different ways to look at it. It makes me experiment with my photos and hunt out places to shoot and just to see what more I can do because it’s inspiring in its originality.

Gelsomina from Donna Flora is just such a dress. I could not stop shooting pictures and have quite the collection on Flickr. First there’s the exuberant combination of lustrous gold in the underskirt, with layers of net, tulle, charmeus and silk ombre. Add the magnolias scattered over the dress and the hairdo that would make Madame Pompadour green with envy and you have a magical enchantment.

Say Yes to the Dress

One of the silliest reality shows on cable is ‘Say Yes to the Dress” about the ups and downs of selling wedding dresses as a high end New York retailer known as Kleinfeld’s. It’s inane, but I had to watch it once just because I loved the name of the show. I love to say Yes to the dress – and it’s so easy when the dress is as lovely as this Wilder gown from MiaMai.

Glamour

Sometimes you just want to look glamorous – and there’s a lot of ways to go, but a little shimmer and shine can add up to lots of glamour in the right hands.  This stunning gown from Mohna Lisa takes glamour to a new level with the radiant shimmer of the crystalline-edge tulle and the crystal beading on the bodice. In the palest champagne white, it has a rich luster that plain white lacks. It’s definitely a red carpet gown if there ever was one.

Dotty

VUI is new to me, a store I found across the street from another shop I was at. Wandering outside a great shop is a good way to find more and that’s what happened this time. I am a slacker, though, when I saw the style of clothing I sent LMs to a couple friends and one of them has already blogged the store twice! Sadly, she has deleted her blog so I cannot give you the link.

I already said I like polka dots yesterday, but just to drive that home, look at this lovely cocktail dress from VUI. Now, it takes a completely different approach to dots – but one that’s equally valid and also manages to produce a look that is both cute and elegant. Two looks that can often be achieved alone, but not as often achieved together. The dots are cute and so is the skirt pouf, but the smaller size of the dots and longer length of the skirt add elements of elegance.  A dress to make me really happy.

Whole Lotta Shaking Goin' On

I do love polka dots so could not resist the new dress from A-Bomb, especially with such a flirty skirt as this one. The rhinestone belt buckle kicks it up a notch, making it a delightful fun dance dress.  It’s definitely one to “shake, baby, shake.”

Glistening, Glittering Gown

Sascha Frangelli is known grid-wide for her gowns that are always extravagantly embellished, rich in detail and in options. You can wear anything from a mini cocktail to a door-bursting battleship gown.  For me, I chose the narrow, sleek skirt.
