of mice and ACK

mousehole2

Six pm. and I heard something scurry, looked left and then right and I began to worry. It had only been 3 weeks since I lived in this house and I was pretty certain that my roommate was a mouse.  I found a hole at the bottom of the wall, peeking in I must have looked 8 feet tall. But as scary as I looked to my new found friend, it popped out it’s head and I ran in the den. Continue reading

Curio: Party Girl Celebration and Settlement Frustration

jan02_004

Dress by Leverocci

Like many other fashionistas who have long enjoyed and appreciated Gala Phoenix’s skins, I was thrilled to read that a settlement had been reached and Curio’s doors are open once again. To celebrate, Gala released an entire pack of her skins, with all the makeups and all the tones, to her in-world group. What a generous gift, especially in celebration of what must have been a very frustrating process. I think many people are feeling frustrated. I know I have mixed emotions. My celebration that Curio has returned to the grid is tempered by the very real disappointment that the settlement precludes the storybook verdict and vindication that all the courtroom dramas promise us.

Reflections, Not Resolutions

dec30_004

Chic is the word for this Drift jacket. You can see its lineage in the glorious history of Chanel with its short-cropped waist, it’s beautifully tailored fit and the rich wool fabric. The skirt, from CIA Designs, is beautifully made. With its relatively high waist, it will work well with all sorts of tops and jackets. For the With Love Hunt, it is only 10L and comes in red, brown and blue. It is one of the can’t miss hunt items. Make yourself comfortable and you should find it.

New Year’s Eve has never been a big holiday in my family. Most of the day was spent cleaning and preparing for New Year’s Day which was much more important. We always had a sparkling clean house and a feast on New Year’s, honoring a folk tradition that what you experience on New Year’s Day is the harbinger of the coming year. Well, one thing you would not want on New Year’s Day is a hangover! We didn’t make resolutions either. This was probably more the influence of my mother more than any tradition. She always said that if you plan to do something, just do it. If it’s important enough to do, it’s too important to delay until the new year. What we did do, though, is look back at the year and appreciate our good fortune.

Those traditions continue. I have been cleaning today. I am having a New Year’s dinner party tomorrow. And I have been looking back at 2012 and appreciating my good fortune.

If It’s Sunday, It Must Be Jazz

dec29_013

I play a classic jazz set every Sunday morning from 9 to 11 AM SLT at The Velvet. Usually I focus on the oldies from Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Zoot Sims, John Coltrane and many others. I have a strong preference for the old jazz greats but the old jazz forms are still powerful influences on today’s jazz. With the year end upon us, I am doing a special set looking back at the fine jazz of 2012. I hope you can swing by.

Sissy Pessoa of Baiastice has created a fabulous dress perfect for any jazz chanteuse. I wish I could sing well enough to be a chanteuse of anything. However, I am perfectly dressed to sing. The heavy silk charmeuse drapes as beautifully as a caress.

Hearts and Flowers on Marketplace

dec28b_003

I seldom shop on Marketplace. There’s several reasons for this. First, let’s just admit that Marketplace search is close to worthless thanks to the proliferation of deceptive sellers who pad their listings and keywords with fraudulent and deceptive descriptions in order to show up in more search results. They go on my list of stores I will never buy anything from because I am not going to reward liars. I also prefer to buy directly from the in-world store to support the existence of stores and sims. I am sad to see more and more stores opt to sell only on Marketplace, saving the cost of tier. I don’t blame them, but it makes our world smaller and less colorful as more stores decide to close their in-world doors. Of course, the main reason is the enjoyment of shopping with friends. Marketplace shopping is a solitary experience while in-world shopping is social. You can run into people you have not seen in ages, meet new people and experience much more of the social part of Second Life than you can on Marketplace.

However, I do browse Marketplace sometimes, looking for new stores. More specifically, looking for new-to-me stores. I was browsing the other day and came across new-to-me Paisley Daisy where I picked up this fabulous sheer mesh dress. Sheer mesh is going to require a bit of shape editing since it comes without an alpha. Well, technically, the creator Joeylin did provide a mesh, but it would look silly to wear it. I had to edit just a bit around the waist and upper thighs, but once that was done, the dress fit fabulously. Of course, with a sheer gown there’s the issue of lingerie, but I long ago made some very basic system lingerie that I could tint to my skin color to wear with clothing that reveals more than I want it to.

My Supervisor

Blog Supervisor

As you can see, my blog pictures and posts are all done under close supervision by Oscar. Because I reached for the camera and shifted back to take the picture, he is positioned a little farther from the laptop than he likes to sit while I work. While I am working, his preferred position is on the very edge of the laptop with his front paws on my forearm and his forehead leaning against my chin, completely blocking my view of the keyboard. Apparently he liked this shot because he walked across the keyboard and saved this shot to disk.

This is the picture Oscar took. The dress is from LIV-Glam and is a fabulous party gown that comes with a HUD allowing me to change it from silver to gold. It’s a perfect dress for us indecisive folks.

A New Way to Deal with Tiled SL Screenshots

dec22_013

La Penderie de Nicole has a great dress for the With Love Hunt. It’s a lovely blue one-shoulder dress with an asymmetrical hem that ends in beautiful ruffle. I had a lot of fun shooting the pics for this post now that I can have shadows and projectors and even depth of field again. For some inexplicable reason, though, a few pictures tiled, a glitch that usually happens when you are shooting pictures with scrolling clouds. I loved this shot but it had one square tile, the one that is at the bottom of the right hand side. I could have cropped it out, but instead I decided to go with it and made a layer of semi-transparent tiles of the same size and then colored them and changed the layer blend to difference to get this tiled effect. It was a fun experiment and does not distract much from your enjoyment of the dress, I hope.

Inspiration Unfolds

dec16_009

Monica Outlander of MiaMai released her newest collection on December 8th. I love her shows. They are always an extravagant and imaginative work of art with music, text, illustration, photography and fashion coming together in a meaningful and thoughtful performance. I missed the show this time since my computer was still in need of repairs, but that doesn’t mean I missed the collection.

I found myself inspired by this rich brocade gown that brings together traditional formality in texture with a modern silhouette and avant garde embellishment. While brocade has been around for over a millennium, it reached its heyday in the 18th century. I have a mental image of one of the weavers who produced the lush silks for the Sun King’s Court seeing this brocade gown with its antlers and wings and wondering why she had not thought of that.
