Teach Me Something: Planning

May21_004

I am ready to plan with my notebook and laptop tucked neatly into this fabulous tote from BSD Design Studio. The fun and flirty skirt is from the brand new store, Lacuna. it comes in all sorts of happy, stripey color combinations.

Strawberry Singh’s Teach Me Something meme appeals to me. To be honest, I do not do a lot of the memes and challenges because what with all the weekly challenges from colors, to Disney characters, to concept challenges to these weekly memes, a person can easily lose track of their own blogging and become just one more iteration of the various weekly themes. However, this meme is particularly fascinating. I would love to learn about skills people use in their real lives – and get an insight into their interests and passions outside of Second Life®.

In my professional life, I probably spent more time planning than doing. After all, there were lots of volunteers and members for the doing, carrying out the plans we made. I did all sorts of planning: planning for conferences, board meetings, dinners, auctions and other fundraisers; planning lobbying campaigns to pass legislation, planning electoral campaigns for candidates and for ballot measures, strategic planning for long-term growth and development. All these kinds of planning have unique challenges, but there are some core elements that they have in common. That is what I thought I might teach.

How to plan.

Pop Cans

apr30_004

Every once in a while you see a designer release a collection that brings them to a new level of excellence and creativity. Shinichi Mathy of Shiki has released just such a breakthrough collection this spring. With textures he developed from the banal elements and detritus of urban life, he has performed an alchemical transformation in to creative gold. For example, the fabric in this dress is inspired by a container filled with empty soda cans, cans seen from the top and the sides as they lay in a pile waiting to be picked up for recycling.

Why I Blog Meme

apr24_005

Strawberry Singh in her seemingly infinite curiosity has a new meme asking people to explain why they blog. I figure that is something I have to be able to answer.

How long have you been blogging? Since January 1, 2008.

Why did you start blogging? For all the free stuff, of course. Joking!!! I blogged for months before I ever received a single preview copy from a designer. People who blog know that even with promotional copies, there are all sort of expenses since there is more to an outfit that a piece of clothing. There’s the shoes, the hair, the jewelry, etc. I am sure a few people start blogging with that moment and they are the ones who quit blogging in three months. For me, I love fashion and love styling outfits. I also wanted to challenge myself as photographer. And clearly, I have to be a bit of a show-off to holler “Hey, Look at me! See what I’m wearing” once a day.

How many times a week do you post an entry? I try to post daily. I like to imagine my readers checking once a day and I don’t want to disappoint them by not having new content.

Apr24_004

How many different blogs do you read on a regular basis? I read hundreds of blogs. I check the several feeds, but I also have use a reader for blogs that aren’t on feeds. Besides Second Life blogs, I read fashion blogs, news and opinion blogs and online magazine sites.

Do you comment on other people’s blogs? Not as often as I should. I would comment more if CAPCHA died in a fire.

Do you keep track of how many visitors you have? Yes and no. When I think of it, I do. However, I have not added Google Analytics or anything to really get a complete view of my visitors. I just look at the built-in WordPress stats. I would love to get an aggregate count of blog and feed views.

Did you ever regret a post that you wrote? No. I am pretty judicious in what I blog. Most of it is about fashion. Occasionally I have addressed one or another issue that is roiling the community, but I think I am able to bring a fair analysis to them. I do not expect to please everyone. That would be banal.

Do you think your readers have a true sense of who you are based on your blog? A bit, not a complete sense. I don’t discuss politics on my blog, so there’s a big piece of my personal interests and passion left out.

Do you blog under your real name? Not my real name, but my real Second Life pseudonym. My blog is pseudonymous, not anonymous.

apr24_006

What is the theme/topic of your blog? The main topic is clearly Second Life fashion. I also write about my life, what I think about things and sometimes I do tutorials.

Do you have more than one blog? If so, why? Yes. I also have Blogging Second Life, Second Sites and Single Servings. The first is not so much a blog, but a directory of Second Life stores and blogs. Second Sites is a place anyone can post a pic and slurl to create a collection of SL sims. Single Servings is a recipe/cooking blog. I also blog about Second Life art and photography at Shopping Cart Disco, though I have been slacking lately on that one. I feel like I have said everything and am just repeating myself.

What have you found to be the benefits of blogging? It’s a method of self-expression. More importantly, it provides structure, discipline and a focus objective in Second Life – something to do. It has connected me to the broader SL community. It’s fun, probably the most important benefit.

I Love Rock and Roll

apr17_004

I love Rock and Roll almost as much as Joan Jett does. I am feeling particularly rock and roll today in this rockin’ outfit from Gizza with a boost from Baistice and MiaMai. Gizza’s Anarchy outfit includes sleeveless mesh tees that can be worn for a bit more coverage and a leather biker cap. It’s a hot rock outfit, with glam elements such as the quilted leather skirt and the gold chain belt. I wanted to add to the glam, though, so I added a jacket from Baiastice full of gold studs. It comes in several colors and I was tempted to go for black, but decided I like the use of silver with gold.

ni.ju Depth

I was going to blog a look of the day but instead I decided just to do a post about these eyes. I love eyes. My first eye love was Tacky Star (rumor has it they are gonna be back soon) then my next love was Ibanez Eyes (Annie recently closed her store-very sad), my next eye romance and still standing romance has been with IKON eyes. I love his eyes, I love how realistic they are and they just shine. I was recently thinking about who does fantasy eyes and then I ran into Vitani Jun last night and I noticed the eyes she was wearing, I LOVED them and so I asked “dude, who made those eyes?!” and Vitani told me that SHE made them…so she passed over a few folders full of fantastic fantasy eyes she has made for her store ni.ju. These rainbow colored eyes called Depth Eyes – Rainbow Swirl are my fav. They come in a large size and a small size. These are going to be a part of my eye rotation from now on…I’m always excited when I find a great eye creator!!

Peek a Boo!

mar30_006

So this is an outfit to wear clubbing. The sleek, almost mirror-like pants look great under the moving colored lights over the dance floor. The top is about as sexy and revealing as is legal and yet cool, comfortable and perfect for dancing. I imagine that little bow could tempt someone to pull one end, but smart tailoring has stitched it closed so there won’t be an murder on the dance floor tonight.

The super sheer lace is lined along the facing, providing strategic opacity just where it is needed. Little chain button closures flirt with exposure but are perfectly secure. Because it is sheer, it has to fit perfectly and it does. There is no alpha with this top because the point is exposing the skin.  Continue reading

Going For Baroque

Mar27_003

Yes, I went for baroque, combining a sweater, skirt, collar, leggings and jewelry for a lace on lace style that is as extravagant as it is elegant.  The skirt I have worn before, a favorite of mine from Baiastice. It is just the right length and has a nice high waist to fit well with so many tops. The sweater from h.m.a.e.m. is divine and cleverly comes with the alpha in two lengths in case you want to show some midriff. She made a black sweater with white lace also and I may go back and pick it up.  Continue reading

Speaking With a Fan

mar23_006

“Men have the sword, women have the fan and the fan is probably as effective a weapon!” —Joseph Addison

When I studied Spanish in High School, one of the really fascinating lessons was an overview of the language of the fan. For example, resting the fan on the right cheek signaled yes and on the left cheek signaled no. Supposedly the message the fan is sending in this pose is “without your love, I want to die.”  Oops!

English Muffins

mar14_007

One Bad Pixel released a new mini-collection with a lot of wardrobe basics and this fabulous slip dress. I love dresses like these, light-weight with body-skimming fabrics that float gently, falling on your curves lightly and moving with your body. The large floral print is lush and the colors are so tempting and delicious.  Of course, with the mesh made by SLink’s Siddean Munro and the textures created by Adam n Eve’s Sachi Vixen, they are bound to be well made, beautifully fitted and textured.  Continue reading

Dream Visitors

mar10_003

I was about 10 minutes late starting my DJ set on Monday night. I took a nap before the set and lingered in one of those waking dreams where you are mostly awake, but hang onto that dream because you really don’t want to let go. It was a bizarre dream. I was grocery shopping with my mother and searching frantically for some barbecue sauce to make some short ribs while my mom stood in one spot insisting “I would be happy with just a turnip.” It’s not the sort of dream one would cling to, except Mom died in 2006 and it was good to see her, even if she just wanted a turnip. Today is Mother’s Day in the UK and I am seeing Happy Mother’s Day wishes on my timeline and thinking of Mom. I am glad I get to see her from time to time, even in silly dreams with turnips.
