The Citiest People

KatatonikOct12_003

I am in love with this gorgeous gown and capelet from KatatOnik. It comes is all the rich jewel tones that you could need to fill a treasure chest. You will find it at Collabor88.  For some reason, the pose and the cool blue tone of the lighting made me think of Melanie Safka’s extraordinarily beautiful song, The Citiest People. Most people probably have not heard of Melanie, or if they have, they only know her biggest song, Brand New Key. However, if you have a chance, spend some time on Spotify or YouTube and discover her many other fabulous songs, like Kansas, Someday I’ll Be a Farmer or Candles in the Rain.

To the citiest people
In the whole wide world
You’ve been unkind
To an un-city girl
From the stone walls you grew, so
I’m not blaming you
But look what the city –
Just look how the city
Has taken a pretty
And made an ugly of you
Just look what the city
Is doing to you

I have pulled out my Fiat Lux projector that I am selling on Marketplace for 50L for shooting the pics today. This is a combination of two projectors – one white and one tinted. They are mod, so you can change the color of the tint. I changed it to red the other day and have often changed it to gold. You can pretty much tint it any way you please. You can also make your own, using the tutorials you can find under the Tutorials tab up above.

To the citiest people
In the citiest town
I’m not the one
To be putting you down
From the stone walls you grew, but
I grew there too
And I know that the city
The dirty old city
Can take such a pretty
And make an ugly of you
Just look what the city
Is doing to you

Bossy Cat

DSCN4796
Oscar is a regular fusspot dictator. I generally make my bed as soon as I get up, but left it unmade yesterday when I got up from napping most of the day with a sore throat and ear ache – a typical cold. I planned to fix some supper, take my meds and then go back to sleep so I left my bed unmade. Within 10 minutes, my cat started howling. I go look and he’s sitting staring at the bed and caterwauling away. I shrugged and left him, but he would not stop. He continued to meow endlessly until I finally gave up and made the bed. This is not the first time. He always howls when the beds not made. Have you ever heard of such a thing? There’s a method to his madness. He likes to crawl under the covers and run around under the blanket – more easily done if the bed is made. Anyway, just one more way Oscar is a bossy cat.

Well, on to what I am wearing. I am DJ’ing this morning and went for comfort and ease with this stylish casual gathered top from tram. I picked it up at Seasons Story. It is sold in two parts, the gathered top and the pleated neckpiece suggesting a blouse to be worn underneath.

The shirt itself comes with two options, a solid black or with the black/brown bicolor.

Quiet Contradictions

Oct10b_004
I love when designers do the unexpected and take something that has been around a long time and use it in a new way. The Fall/Winter collection from Legal Insanity is all about fusing contradictory elements into something new and exciting. One element is the fabric. Through most of the collection, designer Datrip Blackbart uses traditional menswear fabrics – pinstripes and plaids. However, you never see them made into the traditional suit. For the men, they show up in dropped-crotch pants and hoodies and other urban casuals. Meanwhile, for women you see the quiet contradiction of the traditional menswear pinstripe in a strapless formal gown. These pieces deny the expected and take us in an unexpected direction – but more importantly, they work. Looking at this gorgeous pinstripe gown, you can see how perfectly it works.

What All the Fashionable Gladiator Are Wearing

oct10_003

One of the dresses that entranced me at AVENUE Fashion Week was this one from Zanze. It’s called Clarice and features a bodice made of chain mail with intriguing triangle cutouts where the bodice meets the waist of the leather shirt, a scintillating little detail that makes the dress. It is so very fun to see these oh-so-masculine and martial materials being employed in a very feminine form, in a dress that except for that telling detail at the waist, is very traditional in its silhouette.

Chocolate Parfait

Oct08_006

I am in love with this new tunic/jacket combo from ISON for Collabor88. The high-low tunic is a slightly lighter shade of chocolate brown than the cutaway asymmetric leather wrap jacket. I love the modern minimal styling and the playing with form.

Autumn is Coat Time

oct02_002

I had to wear this coat from NYU – it goes so well with the skirt and top I wore in my last post. It features a Peter Pan collar – so very chic and fun.

The Clawtooth hair goes so well with the Peter Pan look.

Plurk has too many good ideas.

Oct01_001

I was tired, cranky and out of sorts, trying to think of a good title for this blog post, I shared this photo on plurk asking for ideas for a post title. They were no help at all, not because they didn’t help, but but because they helped too well.

Really, how can I choose between Sophee Mojo’s elegant and oh-so-autumnal suggestion of the title “Nothing Gold Can Stay” from Robert Frost’s lovely poem.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

Robert Frost

But then there’s Tymmerie Thorne reminder of the commercial we have all seen again and again, “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.”

or Frequency Picnic’s suggestion of the immortal line from McBain in The Critic:

And that’s not all. What to do? What to do?

Falling In Love Again…With Fashion Week

sept30_004

It’s AVENUE Fall/Winter Fashion Week and the event kicked off with 3 shows yesterday and will continue all week. Check out the calendar here. The fabulous Kungler sisters had their show yesterday. There are some big surprises for long time fans, such as this ultra=metropolitan dress in cream with metal accents. Its shape seems loosely inspired by medieval court jesters with the turned up collar post-modern jester’s collar and the pleated and banded sleeves that are a modern, urbanist reinterpretation of the medieval jester’s sleeves. There’s nothing medieval about this dress, though. It’s as modern as can be.

I added the over-the-knee boots that are still available at Collabor88 for a few days before their release at ISON. I love the buckle above the back of the knee and like how the strap width is similar to the width of the metal straps on the sleeve. These boots come in several colors, each as tasty as this fresh cream.

Wake Me Up When September Ends

sep26_004

I will be happy to see the end of this September. It has been an eventful month, one that seems to be unbalanced by a shortage of good news. It made me think of this Green Day song that suits my mood.

I am a firm believer, though, in the power of dressing to cheer yourself up and this tunic from LouLou&Co for Marquis Market is definitely a cheer yourself up fabric.

Oh, that Randy Jackson

Val Mesh Leggings

When Angie Mornington plurked this picture with the comment, “Oooh Randy Jackson Victory Tour pants! I might get these.” I thought for sure I would get them, if I could get the mental image of Randy Jackson wearing them out of my head. Really, I had never noticed that Randy Jackson was into clothes that much. Mainly he was into saying, “That’s pitchy, Dawg” Whatever, the mental image of him in these pants was not a good one. Turns out she meant a different Randy Jackson.

King of Pop Michael Jackson dies at 50

Now that makes sense.
