To Make an End Is to Make a Beginning

“For last year's words belong to last year's language And next year's words await another voice.”
I stopped by Eternal Flame, a sim with a spare, ascetic ambiance of bitter winter, because it will be closed to the public soon. It made me think of T.S. Eliot’s Little Gidding, part of his Four Quartets that secured for him the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote this after his conversation and the poem itself is very much a religious poem, but much of it still speaks to me.

When the short day is brightest, with frost and fire,
The brief sun flames the ice, on pond and ditches,
In windless cold that is the heart’s heat,
Reflecting in a watery mirror
A glare that is blindness in the early afternoon.
And glow more intense than blaze of branch, or brazier,
Stirs the dumb spirit: no wind, but pentecostal fire
In the dark time of the year. Between melting and freezing
The soul’s sap quivers. There is no earth smell
Or smell of living thing. This is the spring time
But not in time’s covenant. Now the hedgerow
Is blanched for an hour with transitory blossom
Of snow, a bloom more sudden
Than that of summer, neither budding nor fading,
Not in the scheme of generation.
Where is the summer, the unimaginable Zero summer?

The poem seems apt for this bright and sunny New Year’s Day, especially the lines from the second section of the poem, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.”  Do I have a new language for this new year? I wonder…

The road is long, with many a winding turn

The road is long, with many a winding turn
I do not know Brandy Maltas (Kalli Birman in Second Life®). However, I know a few things about her. Most urgently, I know she has cancer, a second recurrence of metastatic uterine cancer that has spread to her liver. Secondly, I know she must be a kind person because people care about her and are trying to help her. From the event information, I know she is a single mother of three who is trying to do her best to survive and make it through this battle so she can see her children grown. Lastly, I know that I hope people will support The Road Ahead, an event to support her struggle, before it closes on January 1st.
The road is long, with many a winding turn
As an exclusive for the event, Mami Jewell has released a special amethyst color of her Electra dress. As you can see the dress can be worn different ways, all amethyst or black and amethyst, with all the billowing attachments or without them, with sleeves or without. Azul’s clothing is always versatile.

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.

I stopped by Orchid yesterday. What a lovely place to visit. There are deer, horses, and birds chirping away in a rustic winter wonderland that made me think of Alice talking to her cat, Dinah.

Do you hear the snow against the window-panes, Kitty? How nice and soft it sounds! Just as if someone was kissing the window all over outside. I wonder if the snow LOVES the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

If you’re not feeling sleepy, though, this fun skater’s dress from ISON at Collabor88 is a winner in eight gorgeous colors. ISON also presented coordinating Nordic sweaters to wear over it, but I was drawn to this fur hoodie from Xen’s Hats for the Instruments. It also comes in several colors, but the white one is my favorite.

If Only In My Dreams

Like It's Christmas in the Room

Skin: Glam Affair America/Simone Hair: Doe: Tessa – Fatpack Appliers: Glam Affair Simone Applier for Lelutka Mesh Head Eyes: [PXL] REFLEX Eyes (B) ~ GreyGold Mesh Attachments: .LeLutka.Mesh Head-SIMONE v1.4

Christmas Eve’ll find me
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Lelutka has released a new mesh head called Simone. It’s a special edition head with additional expressions including this mournful one that perfectly captures some of the emotional turmoil I am feeling this Christmas season. With the passing of my aunt this summer, everyone from my parents’ generation is now gone. My sister had a tough struggle with cancer last year and came though in the end, but now has a new cancer that has gone from Stage One to Stage Four in just one month. I will confess I cry a lot lately, but I am still hopeful she will beat the odds. She is the strongest woman I know. Homesickness has manifested itself in the kitchen with traditional Christmas baking like lefse and rosettes and cooking up Cherry Soup with Dumplings, the foods that make me think of home and family.

No one loved Christmas more than my mom. Each year, my dad and my uncle would scour the woods for the perfect black spruce or balsam fir. It has to be 17 feet with no bare spots, so when I put the angel on the top it stopped just shy of the ceiling. Dad made a tree stand with wheels so we could turn it to decorate it evenly. I did the top from my bedroom balcony while they did the middle and bottom before we oh-so-carefully wheeled it across the living room so it was framed in the center by all the windows that faced onto the lake. It was a huge undertaking that was never done in a day, particularly since many of the ornaments were generational hand-me-downs and hand-made memory-laden pieces that prompted stories and remembrances of the past. There were no themed trees or single-colored trees because that store of ornaments was much more precious – a store of memories.

The Exercise Room

Transformation is the driver of self-actualization.I am taking a short break after a lovely morning workout in my exercise room. The attic of my townhouse from Barnesworth Anubis is huge, light and airy, perfect for a playroom or, for singletons like me, for a room to dance, exercise and even chill with a book on the massage table after a workout.

Transformation is the driver of self-actualization.

It looks like a movie; it sounds like a song

Dance is a way to find yourself and lose yourself
Pixicat has a wonderful ballerina skirt and bodysuit at The Arcade along with several darling ballerina globes to decorate your space. I was inspired to make a short video using the Resplendent Rose Ballet Barre that I purchased a few years ago. However, I have gone to the store and to the marketplace and cannot find it for sale any longer. If folks have recommendations, I would love to hear them.
Dance is a way to find yourself and lose yourself

I will do a separate post about the studio furniture and decor. I wanted to focus on this lovely ballet outfit from Pixicat. When you watch the video you will see how flawlessly it fits.

a balloon with a broken string

“I'd be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”

“I’d be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”
― Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

I wanted to be sure to choose the perfect lingerie for this new sheer tunic Zaara released at Collabor88. I had this great set from Luxuria for Fifty Linden Friday. It’s still available, just not 50 lindens. I love the colors and thought it a perfect set for my new tunic. It applies to both Maitreya and Slink bodies, so it’s very flexible.
“I'd be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”

Black Bantam, a new to me label, released this lovely Autumn Dreams Balloon Chair, a fantasy piece that I took for a ride on the Linden Ocean.  Stacey Oller is the designer for Black Bantam and may be more familiar to folks under her fashion label Pink Acid. The chair contains several poses and animations for men and women (and kids) and comes in blue as well.

So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause.

Black and white is abstract; color is not. Looking at a black and white photograph, you are already looking at a strange world. Joel Sternfeld

The Instruments monthly showcase is featuring designs inspired by Star Wars this month. Among the designs, you will find this fabulous gown inspired by Padme’s outfit in Episode Three. Padme’s lament, “So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause.” seems particularly apt at this time when crowds of people applaud the creation of databases to track people because of their ethnicity and armed vigilance committees march outside mosques and call themselves patriots. I guess those people have not studied history (or watched Star Wars), a tabula rasa of ignorance on which the future of tyranny is being written. Of course, the Force is with us all to resist tyranny by resisting fear. We know what happens when fear inspires hate.  It has happened before and if we fail to learn from that, we have only ourselves to blame.

I stopped at Winter Moon for the photos, since the dress is black and white, I thought black and white pictures would be great. By the way, I think the scarf that is part of the Padme dress may work well with other outfits. The Padme outfit includes the dress, scarf and sleeves that I am wearing as well as a crown, earrings and rings that I am not.

I Always Have a Friend

The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend. ~Cali Rae Turner

I don’t know who Cali Rae Turner is but Turner once said “The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend.” I have three sisters and from my experience that is not completely true. But it’s true enough. I certainly know that one of my best friends in life has always been my middle sister. Her children are my age, but it doesn’t matter. She and I are the ones who are close and always have been.

My earliest memory is of her. I know it is my memory and not a family story because nobody else remembered it, even my sister, until I reminded her. I was 18 months old, had just had my tonsils removed (They grew back!) and was in the hospital in a crib. A nurse came to give me a shot and I kept running away from her, going from one end of the crib to the other. So the nurse had her grab me and hold me still. Betrayal!!! Obviously, I have forgiven her. Since our parents died, she has been my linchpin.

She was sick last year, a tortuous battle with breast cancer and brain tumors, but she got through it and has been back at work full-time for about two months. She just found out on the 8th that she has lung cancer. Don’t worry. She caught it early at Stage 1 and she should be fine, but it threw me for a loop. A bigger one than last year because I thought we were done with all that. It feels so much like being back at Square One. It is not, we know now that she cannot tolerate Doxorubicin and they won’t use it. This means she won’t have to go through the hell of neutropenia for months on end. So she’s ahead of the game. She is strong, a tough, stoic survivor who will do well.  But I am still off balance, angry because this is so not fair–as if there is anything fair about cancer–and wishing that she could at least had a few more months before cancer took another run at her.

The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend. ~Cali Rae Turner

It’s a beautiful day at Nightfall.

She joined Second Life® about a month or so after I did. I walked her through it. She’s on my friend’s list–Marit Lilliehook, though she has not logged in since 2007. We were going to have adventures in SL together, but she’s one of those computer users who accidentally unfriends her children and has to call my nephew to come over to her house to restore her browsers file menu when she makes it disappear. Second Life just overwhelmed her. She’s been using browsers on the internet for 15 years and I still have to remind her how to do a bookmark, so this time it’s not SL’s fault for being too hard. On the other hand, she has crushed the competition in Candy Crush.

She will be okay, I would bet on it. But I am a bit wobbly and may be a bit more erratic than usual with my blogging. However, it will be all okay in the end. I know my sister and if anyone can beat cancer twice, she can.
