I have been wearing Kungler’s jewelry, shoes and clothing since 2008. In fact, I just checked and this will be the 227th post with the Kunglers tag. A Kunglers design is instantly recognizable, not just because the quality is unimpeachable, but because there is this organic fusion of urban sophistication with the reckless exuberance of the wild.—

It’s Only Fashion: What was your first day in Second Life like? What made you stick it out through the learning curve?

Ava Kungler: I made an account on Second Life by invitation of my sister, who already was “playing” a few days . After a few weeks teleporting between places, it became clear the need for an occupation, since I wanted to learn more about this new world. The first thing that came to mind was to try an old dream with fashion and design. As I already had some experience with designing tools I thought it would be a great opportunity that I could not miss.

IOF: What’s the craziest thing you ever did in Second Life? Most exciting? Silliest?

AK: Living a virtual world is already somehow something crazy … but when I remember my first fashion show , that was exciting!!… it was something surreal that made me very nervous while ecstatic to see my creations being shown on the catwalk. Continue reading

Lullaby of the Rain

150320_004

I spent far too much getting this dress at The Arcade, but I console myself with knowing that the color-change HUD makes it several dresses in one. Besides, it has the prettiest color-change HUD in SL history.

Friday was the vernal equinox and it came with extras this year— a solar eclipse and a supermoon. Spring, however, came to Oregon long before the equinox. Already the daphnes and magnolias are in bloom. The air is rich with fragrance and spring’s showers paint everything a lush green. There is such an abundance of life in Oregon, all fed by the wonderful rain that if you live in Oregon, you must come to love.

The crazy thing about gardening in SL, I can have wisteria and magnolias at the same time as hibiscus and lavender, isn’t that amazing?

The Owls Have It

Emery released pencil skirts and sweaters at Collabor88 this month. Both are great separates for mixing and matching, but the pencil skirts in particular are investment pieces. They are beautifully crafted as you can see in the picture below where I am sitting and you can see that the interior is lined so there is no alpha messing up the picture.  Continue reading

A Damn Fine Cup of Coffee

150315_002

Relaxing at Agent Cooper’s desk with a damn fine cup of coffee from Schadenfreude.

When my father died, my sisters called to tell me. It was not unexpected and was, in many ways, a relief for him and everyone who loved him, but that does not lessen the loss or the finality of death. They gave me the news and I sat there, quietly stunned at how much more painful it was than Thought it would be. I think I whimpered, trying not to cry. So my oldest sister said, “Go make yourself a coffee. It’s a good thing. I’ll call you back after you’ve had a coffee.” I had to laugh to myself, because coffee as comfort is so very much the legacy of my dad, a first generation Swedish American.

150315_003

Such a messy desk! some of the mess comes in a great collection of clutter from Tres Blah at The Arcade that are must have pieces to turn houses into homes.

Coffee is a ritual for Scandinavians who consume more coffee per capita than any other people in the world. Most people in the US are familiar with coffee breaks at the work place, but in a Swedish American home, there are coffee breaks every day, when we would all sit down together and enjoy a good cup of coffee with some bread and cheese or some fruit or a dessert. And by all, I mean all. Children get coffee with milk as soon as they are old enough to hold a cup without spilling it. Continue reading

In Living Color

150310_003

How many of us have predominantly black, grey, and white clothing? How many homes have all white walls and neutrals with a “pop” of accent color? We don’t have achromatopsia, so why do we live like we do? Why are neutrals considered more tasteful than active, vibrant colors?

Did you know that those classic white statues from ancient Rome and Greece were not originally white? They were painted and full of bright gaudy color. I wonder sometimes if the centuries of elevating their pristine monochromatic grandeur are why we are so shy with color in our lives today.

There’s Nothing Virtual About Discrimination

Stand4Love

This is an old picture from 2012, but a situation came up last night and the sentiments fit the situation.

Since we can create our virtual selves to suit our aspirational selves, most of us come to see Second Life® as a refuge from the kinds of discrimination and bigotry that infect our first lives. Linden Labs has deliberately fostered a culture that actively discourages and prohibits racism, bigotry and hatred. Opposing intolerance is the very first principle in the Second Life Community Standards and LL claims it is a cornerstone of their standards.

Intolerance
Combating intolerance is a cornerstone of Second Life’s Community Standards. Actions that marginalize, belittle, or defame individuals or groups inhibit the satisfying exchange of ideas and diminish the Second Life community as a whole. The use of derogatory or demeaning language or images in reference to another Resident’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation is never allowed in Second Life.

Last night a gay couple went to a dance club. They were dancing together as couples are accustomed to do in dance clubs when the owner, Zardozer Kirax interrupted. He asked them to read the club rules and “helpfully” sent them a notecard with the rules included. They soon discovered what rule they were violating.

We are asking all our Gay or Lesbian visitors to respect those patrons around them by not dancing up front.. We fully understand that you would want somewhere nice to spend time too. The garden is large and plenty of places for you to enjoy our venue.

Holy Rosa Parks, Batman! Could someone be more obtuse and offensive? Yes, I know and many have said, it is his land and he could make it private and only allow members, he could be explicit about his bigotry and declare it a straights-only club just as there are furry-only clubs and role-play-only clubs and so on. But he does not do that.

Like the businesses of Birmingham and the Jim Crow South, he wants the business, the traffic, the tips, the money of gay people, he just does not want to see their gayness and he wants to protect the delicate flowers who dance in his club from having to see “the gay.” This is about as obtusely offensive as one can be. After all, he is okay taking their tips, their traffic, but ewww, don’t let him see them dance together.

Here is a portion of the conversation between the club owners and the people he was discriminating against.  “I would be full happy to see you guys dancing off to the sides in the back half over at the falls in one of the hide outs we provide. All we ask is not in this area.”

Asking someone to move to the back, to the hide outs is the very definition of marginalizing them. If Linden Lab is serious about tolerance, they would discourage this behavior in a public club. And yes, I know his land his rules, but he is operating a public club, not a private club. Perhaps if he wants to impose his bigotry, he should create a private club for members only  with his homophobic rules clearly stated before people join, then they would avoid the very public pain of being asked to hide themselves from view.

So yes, “his land his rules”, but that does not exempt him or his club from criticism. Yes, people who are lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex or questioning may just decide they do not want to go to a club that does not want them. However, I hope people who support our LGBTIQ friends and family also would not want to go to such a place to support such a business.

Several people will wonder why anyone should care about some homophobe using a bit of server  space  in a virtual world to assert his bigotry. But here is the thing, this couple was told they are not welcome because of who they are, that they should hide in the corners out of sight, that their presence offends the people he cares about. The harm, the hurt, the emotional damage is as real as anything said on Main Street.

UPDATE: The rule has been changed and an apology was made.

UPDATE: I put scare quotes around “His land his rules” to clarify that I was responding to the several people who made that argument and not asserting that argument myself. Here in Oregon, refusing service to someone on the basis of the sexual orientation is against the law. A bakery was recently fined $150,000 for refusing to bake a cake for a gay wedding. It is also illegal in California where Linden Labs is incorporated. I would assume that would govern the rules in Second Life. However, the club owner shared a conversation with Second Life support that implied he was free to make up whatever rules he likes.

Imagine If Jane Austen Got Angry

150305

This Spring session of The Arcade has one of the most exciting Arcade sets of all time. For once, it’s a good thing to get lots of commons while seeking your rare. You will need several pieces of the common wall to surround your manor house with a beautiful courtyard. Anyway, it’s just an extraordinarily complete collection with 2 houses, an outbuilding, landscaping and interior furnishing, even a well and a wooden cart.

Yesterday was World Book Day. That, combined with the wonderful Primavera in Toscana set from 8f8 at The Arcade got me thinking about my favorite books of the past year.  What rose to the top was Elena Ferrante’s magnificent Neapolitan novels. Now, the novels mainly take place in a poor neighborhood in Naples, not in a rich manor home in Tuscany, but know, we Americans are supposed to think there is no difference, right?

Actually, the wall reminds me so much of the wall surrounding the Spanish military base where I was living with a Spanish family while attending my senior year in Algeciras, Spain. The one difference is that the wall in Spain had flowers on the top, trailing down the white walls. There were always two guards outside with a sign “Todo por la patria” on the wall next to the guard station. Can you imagine an American military base with a wall covered with flowers?

I love the contradictions in this dress and coat from NYU. NYU specializes in minimalist design, the aesthetic beauty of a dress and coat coming from the lines and forms of the clothing, not from embellishment or patterns. The dress has this severe post-war austerity except that slit on the skirt is thoroughly modern and not the least bit austere.

John Freeman of The Australian wrote of Elena Ferrante, “Imagine if Jane Austen Got Angry.” The Neapolitan novels tell the story of two women, from their childhood to adulthood. There is a lot of anger in her novels, but also humor and love. They seem so raw and honest, as though the author cannibalized her life to tell the story, though we cannot know as Elena Ferrante is very private. Still, the narrator in this Neapolitan tetralogy is named Elena and plans to be a writer. In terms of the usual publicity authors relentlessly pursue, she said she did all she needed to do for her book, she wrote it. I love that!

The Angel is in the Details

150302_004

They say the devil is in the details, but there is nothing devilish about this dress.

When Pixicat shared this dress as a Work In Progess on Plurk, I knew I had to have it. The details were so carefully wrought that anyone who loves great craftsmanship would admire the dress, whether it is their personal style or not. A lot of thought went into the design in ways to allow you to wear it as you please. For example, it comes with or without the white blouse, there’s a detachable bow you can opt to leave off, as I did. And then the lacy overskirt can be worn, as I did, or left off, as Gidge did in the previous post. On top of that, the lace overskirt it tintable so you could color it anything your heart desires.

Goodbye Old Friend

Snapshot_001

I was honored to be asked to DJ the first half of the Closing Party for Rouge, the incomparable sim that was the brainchild of Codebastard Redgrave (Codie) and Eshi Otawara. Because Rouge is Red and Red is Codie raison d’être, I knew I had to wear red, just as I did to the opening party back in July, 2008. With its dance poles and feather boa foliage, Rogue is a place to wear your naughty and flirtatious outfits, so I was thrilled that Azul released Likka, a brand new burlesque corset and skirt just in time for the party. How perfect is that.

Snapshot_002

Medieval scholars debated for years about whither art of nature. Eshi Otawara’s answer is art and nature, terraforming the land of Rouge into a work of art. Be sure to check out this photo from Oscar Page. I like it much better than mine.
