Hair Fair Designers — Thora Charron

Thora's New Face (unedited)

Thora Charron, April 2015

If you have ever wanted to discover what it feels like to be trampled by a herd of bison, just teleport to Lelutka after the group received a notice of a new hair release by Thora Charron. It is not for the faint of heart.

Why such excitement? I think there are a few reasons. For a redhead like me who wants to avoid the fiery and brassy reds, her hair textures are a wonder.  I am surely not alone. Her releases often reflect a theme, an organizing inspiration so there is always some curiosity about what new thing she has done. She innovates. While fades and ombres have spread like wildfire, I remember that they did not exist “back in the day” and the frenzy when she released her first hair with roots. There is thoughtfulness behind her releases that inspires curiosity, anticipation, excitement and stampedes.

It’s Only Fashion: What’s the craziest thing you ever did in Second Life? Most exciting? Silliest? Is there a story you can share that captures your Second Life experience?

Thora Charron: Honestly, I really can’t remember anything that crazy. I remember helping tweak Minnu’s shape back in 2007 in some strange online game having no idea what Second Life was.

Once I was in-world, there were some very bad IM pickup lines, from back in my SL clubbing days. Some really unfortunate nude teleports to public places which tend to happen more often then one would think. OH… one really unfortunate typo during a photo shoot which I really am not going to reveal because it is super embarrassing.

Hair Fair Profiles: Oblivion by Albakruna

This is the first in a series of profiles of some of the designers at Hair Fair 2015. Albakruna designs fantasy and role play hair, with a strong emphasis on historically accurate hair designs. Her store is named Oblivion.

It’s Only Fashion: What’s the craziest thing you ever did in Second Life? Most exciting? Silliest? Is there a story you can share that captures your Second Life experience?

Albakruna: Actually I consider every day of my days in Second Life the craziest, silliest, funniest ever because let’s face it, even just hovering over a cloud in the sky while building is not that usual. What chained me to this world and still keep me thrilled about is the fact you virtually can do whatever as the imagination is the only limit and, we know, imagination has no limits 🙂

Event Madness (In the Best Possible Way)

150710_004

Even though there were few people awake when i visited the Hair Fair sims during the blogger preview, I dressed for a crowd. I wore just a hairbase, my default avatar, no shoes and this lovely little romper from Tee*fy. Of course, once I went back home, I jumped back into my mesh body and added some shoes, hair and accessories, because, well, I felt naked without my mesh body. What struck me as incredibly funny, though, is that I ran into four other bloggers who were wearing this romper, obviously having the same idea as me. The nice thing was that everyone was wearing a different print, thanks to the amazing quantity of prints and colors that Azure Electricteeth produced for Collabor88 this month.

I wondered what possible new thing Sasy, Mel and Whimsy could come up with for this year’s Hair Fair. What could top those boxes of hair dye from last year? Well, this time the stores are giant shopping bags. There are also a few spills of shopping bags scattered around, you can even walk inside them. There are huge lipstick displays, too. Of course, I had to check out the ones on the Redhead sim.  Continue reading

The Perils of Ponchos

122714_005

I don’t know about you, but for me, ponchos have always been problematic. I bought my first poncho in Spain – knit with thick, luxurious wool and closing at the neckline with gorgeous unvarnished wood buttons. It was so warm and cozy and it felt like wearing a blanket, which meant it really needed to be worn on cold days. So here’s the thing. In Minnesota, if it’s cold enough to wear that poncho, it’s too cold to wear that poncho. The wind would blow up underneath and chill me to the bone. An engineering flaw for cold weather. So every time I see ponchos, I think of my few attempts wearing my gorgeous poncho and remember those bone-chilling gusts of wind sneaking in underneath and think – nope, not for me.

What I needed was one more like this poncho from Zenith – to wear indoors kind of like a high fashion snuggle. But it’s Second Life and so even though there’s snow falling and the pond is frozen over, the winds that ruffle my hair are soft zephyrs carrying billowing warmth – not bone-chilling blasts from Polar Vortex.

Mmmmmmmm, Jackets

Snapshot

I dreamed I was there in Jacket Heaven and oh what a beautiful dream. But then, it was not a dream! Tres Blah really did release a perfect jacket in five metallics just in time for Christmas. I love jackets and need them desperately because so many tops and dresses are strapless. I don’t mind strapless in a formal, but for everyday – nope, not for me. I want some sleeves! These jackets are sold along with some cute rompers at N°21, the event that just opened yesterday. Yes, I hit teleport several times to get in, but once I was there, everything razzed easily and quickly and I cam-shopped happily.

Speaking of formals, Baiastice has released the annual Winter Collection of formals just in time for the holidays and they are gorgeous. This classic comes with a regular skirt or one with a tulle overskirt. I elected to wear the tulle. I snapped a picture when I was over at The Liaison Collaborative picking up the necklace and earrings I am wearing. It’s beautifully decorated for the holidays.

Sleighing Under the Influence

Oh, Deer

While doing some practice runs for the big day, the reindeer had a little accident. You can see Donner up in the tree and Blitzen is obviously blitzed, just look at the vacant expression on his face. I am not sure he even knows what happened yet. I stopped by to survey the damage, but no one was seriously hurt. I am sure there is time to repair the sleigh by Christmas. I only hope those packages were empty samples and didn’t have anything fragile in them.

Oh, Deer

What does one wear to a sleigh accident? Why a nice warm wool dress and a beautiful wool scarf, of course. The dress if from Thalia Heckroth and the scarf is part of a hair plus scarf combo from Rowne for Collabor88. It comes with a HUD to change the scarf textures so there is plenty of choices available.

Snowbunny

Direct from SL -141210

It is snowing in Second Life® and warm weather clothing is not only de rigueur, it is downright a necessity. The December collection at Collabor88 is your winter outfitters headquarters with all kinds of outwear options. I decided to mix up a few pieces, taking these gorgeous wool trousers from Baiastice and the lovely wool sweater, jacket and scarf from The Secret Store. There are multiple color options so you can mix and match enough outfits for the entire month – they all look great together. I went for a monochromatic white, grey and black look.

Comfy Cozy

Untitled

It’s so cold outside, but I am snug as a bug inside the little snuggery from tarte for The Arcade. With a wall of windows facing south I get enough sun to warm up.

Untitled

Of course, layering is the real secret to warmth. This lovely outfit from PixiCat for Collabor88 is not only warm as the rug that snugs the bug, but it is really an entire wardrobe. The leggings and the jacket come with texture-changing HUDS. The sweater is tentacle, so the only limit is statistical. Continue reading

Fixin’ To Die

141206

Delta Bluesman Bukka White wrote the Fixin’ To Die Blues and later it was covered by Bob Dylan and by Dave Van Ronk. I thought about it yesterday when Second Life® had another auto-update that resulted in immediate crashes when I tried to take a picture. I thought they are fixing me right out of Second Life – each update and “improvement” making my experience more laggy and frustrating. And yes, I did all the requisite attempts to fix it including a clean install. I ended up installing an older update and crossing my fingers. For whatever reason, though, I cannot save a picture to disk without crashing, even in the older version now. The only way I can take pictures is uploading them directly to Flickr®. Oh well, here they are, raw shots that are not even cropped. The clothes are still gorgeous!

When I was camming around I accidentally cammed in on my face though the street light globe. I thought the effect was freaky and fun.
