The End of the Journey

Memento Mori

I have done very little since I received that e-mail early Wednesday morning telling me that Squinternet had reached the end of her journey. I posted an announcement in her groups and on the Love Donna Flora blog and crawled into bed for a good cry. Crying can be so cleansing. Unfortunately, it upset my cat who proceeded to demonstrate loudly and longly that he can cry harder and louder than me. This touch of the ridiculous made me laugh.

Grief is like a cloud, fogging my brain. But one thing I know, I am not alone in my grief. Squinternet (Giulia) was widely admired and literally hundreds of people have been touched by her artistry and her kindness and they all feel her absence. I hope those who loved her find comfort in the knowledge that she was well and widely loved and that thanks to the generosity and openhearted spirit of the Second Life community, she got to see that before she died. In many ways, Love Donna Flora! was a memorial – one that she attended. People shared their hopes, best wishes and their love for her at the event and on the blog with blog posts, messages and open-hearted generosity. And she got to see it for herself.

A zig of braids

New hair from Calico

Calico Ingmann just created this lovely hair, Clara. When I saw it, I scratched my head, because I was certain I saw the inspiration for this somewhere… and then I fell down the rabbit hole of Pinterest boards about braids and suddenly it was 1 am. At any rate, I adore it, and want the skill in real life to braid like this. (And like these.) Go check out her shop, here.

I am wearing it with new little pastel wings that Allegory created for today’s FLF. They aren’t just pastel, but come with a monochrome hud as well for one’s more somber chibi wing needs. The rest of my stuff is from Arcade, of course. But the ultimate point is: FLF means it’s Friday! Soon we shall be sleeping in and drinking coffee in bed!

I also went poking around the sim of Azuchi yesterday. It is home of AMM designs (I think that’s the name), a retailer of Japanese home and garden goods. The sim is carefully designed — a great Daimyo’s castle set up on a hill, with the rest of the little medieval Japanese town spread below it, down to a tree-lined coast. The sim has many little nooks for exploration and relaxation, including this very pretty bower by the sea.

Behind the cut are more photos of my outfit, and a few more of Azuchi.

Fall Fever

Apparently fall fever is here but you wouldn’t be able to tell it where I live. It’s been 100 degrees for a week and will continue to be boob sweat weather for at least another week. Anyways, the lovely thing about SL is that my avatar neither sweats nor gets runny mascara. I can put her in a sweater, like the new one you see below from Cracked Mirror, and a cute skirt which is also new from CM, and she is just fine.

Lurking about Cupcake

Cupcake (1)

Last night I went for a wander through Cupcake, home of my pal Marie’s shop Milk Motion, among others. The shopping sim is just lovely, and reminds me of cute little northern European cities full of new things gently poured into old shells. The buildings and streets seem designed for walking traffic, with little arcades and gardens here and there, and the shops all entirely suit the sim. I’m loving what Marie is doing with mesh, and she’s always incredibly on-trend with her stuff. It’s a little like seeing Urban Outfitter’s catalog for next year, or Zara’s from this year.

I’m also wearing a new gorgeous skin from MiaSnow, her Walker skin. I am a huge sucker for her stuff and always have been, ever since the green and splotchy days (and I’ve kept every single skin she’s made). This one is a beautiful greyish purple like a decaying corpse, but perfectly made up like a drag queen. You can find it in the Marketplace, and pause for some black insect-like eyes too.

I actually got to the Arcade boat, so in this photo is my first item from Arcade, whee. Best of luck to all of you for reaching it, and getting what you want! The only thing left on my to-buy list are the Curio Obscura monster boots… More photos and credits behind the cut.

And lol — Gidge just got me sucked into the Grumpy Cat avvie. Nice post, Gidge!

Who shot the jukebox?

Miss Gidge

When I went back to Wild Texas Rose to get the slurl for y’all, I stumbled into a saloon. The saloon had a country DJ, and a lot of people line dancing. I’d never really thought about line dancing in SL, but of course it exists! How silly of me! (I admit I’ve only really been to the Aviary and the Velvet. I need to get off my arse more.)

I went to the sim because it was promoted in the destination guide, and because it’s beautiful. It has a little western town on an island surrounded by a river, and beyond that, gorgeous southwestern mesas — yep that’s right, I came for the mesas. They look fabulous in sunset windlights!

I also lured Gidge out to pose for me (that’s right, that ain’t me in that thar photo). This woman wears more half-naked than I wear fully clothed, no joke! Click the cut tag to see more photos of this lovely sim, and to see ALL THE STUFF GIDGE WEARS. 😀

Dream Island (4)

School’s begun and mostly I’d like to be at the beach. Luckily it’s almost good beach weather in Florida (not so ridiculously hot), and this is totally achievable, just as soon as I feel better from treatments. Instead, I had a lazy morning staying in from work and headed to Dream Island in SL. Oddly enough it’s listed in the destination guide’s haunted category, but it must’ve had a thematic shift at some point because it was simply a lovely beach. I poked into a few coves, accidentally checked out someone else’s beach bungalo (oops!), and went diving with the orca. I like beach sims that don’t ignore the stuff below water!

I’m wearing a new-to-me designer, Trinite, today. I like the flirtiness of the cropped schoolgirl shirt and skirt, cutely done! More photos of the sim are behind the cut.

Today I dreamed of beaches...

Even When You Cannot See Them

aug24_008

The shoes you choose are important. Even when you cannot see them, they are important. They tie your outfit together by unifying the different elements or they can add ironic punctuation by introducing a disparate element to your look. They express the mood of your outfit without saying a word. The Pickford heels from Ingenue say a lot. They are classic, restrained and yet have some exquisite details such as the way the strap splits into two and the tiny, neat bow. In most views of my outfit today, you cannot even see them, but I know they are there and that is all that matters.

Today I am wearing a gorgeous formal gown from Liziaah, an amazing designer who migrated to SL from IMVU and who I predict you will hear more of as more and more people become familiar with her designs. This is a lush formal gown with minimal fuss in the structure and maximal attention to details in the print – a gorgeous of flowers and lace that would have made Marie Antoinette giddy with delight.

A philosophical walk in a crowded park

Tempura (1)

Today I was hunting a particular season and went to the sim of Tempura to find it. Little did I know that this sim actually has PEOPLE in it — people who are there to MEET OTHER PEOPLE and TALK and stuff! It was shocking.

The sim itself is very pretty. It has a beautiful covered bridge with two levels, spanning various bits of Autumnal wilderness. There are places to sit and chat, and…did I mention the insane numbers of OTHER AVATARS? You will probably sense by now that I never, ever get out. I really don’t. So while I was standing around, someone messaged me a pleasant hello.

“OMG –” I messaged a friend. “What do I do when someone I don’t know says hi to me?!”

“You say hello back, idiot,” the friend said, so I did, and fell into a very pleasant conversation with a decent, interesting lady.

This lady made a fabulous point during our conversation. “People blog about skins, but if they don’t blog their shape, then how will people know how to get that exact look?” she said.

Fair enough! Some excellent bloggers actually do blog about their shapes as well as skins, and that’s the best way to get a particular look. But as for me, I can’t even remember where I bought my first shape, and along the way it’s been modded so that it’s completely different anyway. Much like real life, it feels like an organic aging process for my avatar… but it’s kind of impossible to track.

Anyway. What do you guys think? Should people blog more about their shapes if they’re talking about a particular skin?

I was out doing my Saturday morning farmer’s market shopping when I spied it. A Rainbow Fence! I quickly ran over, struck a pose and snapped. Now I can get that piece on my fashionista punch card punched out and I can trade it in for a free gift! I hope it’s a toaster! Continue reading

A gentle countryside full of unexpectedly sentient rodents

Isle of Myrth (5)

I was always enchanted by the strangely magical realist tales of Beatrix Potter, but my daughter had no time for them. “Can you read me this thing about Tinker Bell and these other fairies and their talents instead?” Oy vey, this is what parenting in Orlando is like.  But I was overjoyed to find this lovely sim in the Destination Guide. In the words of the people who own the Noble Storybook sim (Isle of Myrth):

This island was born out of a love and passion for those who tell stories and tales. [Some] of the most known tales of several generations are the Tale of Peter Rabbit and many more, written by Beatrix Potter. Not only was she a a marvelous storyteller and artist, but [she was] also a woman who was more progressive then many of her time.

. . . We tried to create the atmosphere of where she lived, where she wrote, where she created and where many of her tales were situated. You will find her small cottage on the island, the lake, the forest where Peter Rabbit and his siblings adventures took place, and many more figures from Beatrix’s stories.

It’s truly lovely there. Here is the SLURL to the sim! A few more pictures (including one of the lovely Weather or Not? spiral umbrella from Genre) are behind the cut.
