Syndel Daviau and River Eternal are the design partnership behind the Asset hair salon. River Eternal described their relationship like this. “The shop is ours, but she’s the brain, I’m mostly the hands” When the brain and hands work together, some amazing things can be produced. Sandel Daviau completed the interview.

It’s Only Fashion: What’s the craziest thing you ever did in Second Life? Most exciting? Silliest? Is there a story you can share that captures your Second Life experience?

Sandel Daviau: The craziest, most exciting and probably silliest thing altogether that I’ve been doing in SL since my very arrival is to own roleplay sims. So far they have been about a dozen and I never can stop myself from thinking about the next one. It’s like an addiction to bring amazing playgrounds to the grid, much like making books come alive so people can play in them. Don’t you love it when the sun is bright and streams in through the windows creating an interplay of light and shadow in your home? I know cats love it as they shift to follow the light. I am more a shade person and will shift from the sunlight into the shade, but I still love to see the beams of light moving across my home.

My dress is a super-feminine lace dress from Gizza called Cara. It is very demure and feminine from the front, though there is a bit of a surprise from the back as you shall see.

I am relaxing in the living room from my new cottage by dust bunny that I picked up at The Arcade. Through the windows you can see the greenhouse as well. The side tables and the pitcher of baby’s breath and the book on the far table are all from the dust bunny collection at The Arcade. Scarlet Creative’s Amelie sofa seems made for this sweet little cake of a house. I changed the pictures in the frames from the DRD frames I got at December’s Arcade. I thought it might be fun to put in old family photos, so the pictures are of my grandmother, great grandfather, great-great-great grandfather, a family reunion in 1901 and other old family photos.

Like most Americans, I celebrated Thanksgiving with wonderful food and the company of people I love. I spent the day with my best friend and her family and called and chatted with my family. I was sitting at the table watching my friend’s mother-in-law putting some of my warm brussels sprouts salad on her plate when I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me – gratitude for having such good friends and the pleasure of such good food and such plenty.

So I have been crashing every single time I saved a picture to disk for the last two days, perhaps some new incompatibility arose from upgrading my OS to Yosemite. I will have to figure it out soon, but I didn’t feel like trouble shooting today, so I just save the photos direct to Flickr®. That means these are truly raw photos, not even cropped. I just set the size of the frame inworld and clicked until I got the shot I wanted and so what you see is what you get. As to why it crashes saving to disk but not to Flickr, those are the mysteries of computers and graphics cards and code.

When I put on this dress, Half Measures, from Dead Dollz for Penumbra’s Autumn/Winter Fashion Week, I immediately thought of Audrey Hepburn. It has a similar front neckline to the little black dress by Givenchy for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. While the wide circle skirt is a complete opposite to the long, slim pencil skirt of that iconic gown, it is still something she would have worn.

Audrey Hepburn remains one of the great fashion icons achieving a kind of immortality with her legacy – not just in film but in fashion and even more importantly, with her activism. She was far more than a pretty face, but was a wise woman who worked tirelessly on behalf of refugees as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, a passionate commitment that may have risen out of her experiences as a teenager in World War II working as a courier for the resistance while one stepbrother went underground and the other was in a labor camp.

Petit Chat at Fashion Week

Trinity Yazimoto of Petit Chat is doing something intriguing with her textiles in her Fashion Week collection. She is texturing her clothing with fabrics created from Second Life® photos that she took. In Sweet Mnemosyne, the outfit I am wearing, she using a picture of a woman in a giant bird cage in a field of flowers. I am excited to see someone using Second Life to create clothing textures as it is something new that I have not seen before.

Shh, don’t tell Gidge, but I am wearing pink! Not that I hate pink or anything, I just generally choose other colors because I know if Gidge likes the same dress, she would probably choose pink most of the time. However, this time she is out of luck. I have it first. I am wearing it. So there!

Only 100 copies will be sold, so if you have it, you can wear it to a formal event and be pretty sure you will not see it on another person. It’s made with several options that I left off, preferring a simple silhouette. You can add stockings, gloves, sheer sleeve caps and a full mermaid flounce at the bottom.

Who <3s Role-Play?

If role-playing were just dressing up in beautiful gowns like this one from Peqe, I think everyone would love it. Of course, in one sense we are all role-playing in Second Life, just some are role-playing roles more divergent from their first than others. While the /me narrative of role-playing is not for me, I think the role-playing community has been one of the most positive forces in SL bringing us hundreds of sims rich with historical or fantastical detail. Second Life would be a much less beautiful place without role-play.
