I first discovered Izzie’s through one of those moments of serendipity that seem so much a part of Second Life®. It was back in 2009, I think, or 2008 and I was desperately searching for some studded tights. I spent hours going from store to store to store to store, most of them stores that left me awestruck with their awfulness thanks to the sort of things that come up in search when you used search terms like stud or studded. I asked in the Fashion Bloggers group and was sent hither and yon, but no luck. No one had what I wanted. I decided to be Scarlett and “think about it tomorrow” and logged out for the night.

When I returned the next day, I got a new item notice, probably via FashCon since that was when FashCon was still the it group, and it was from Izzie’s announcing studded tights. I also was helpfully sent a dozen copies of the notice from bloggers who remembered my frustration the night before. It was one of those wonderful moments. I felt like Izzie Button, the Izzie’s creator, had made them just for me, though of course, it was incredibly unlikely that she turned out several pairs of stockings, boxed and made vendor pics for them all overnight. Still, that is how it felt. Since then, I have no idea how often I have worn those tights. I still have them. They are wonderful and indestructible. They will be in my inventory when Linden Labs turns out the lights for the last time sometime in the far, far distant future.

It’s Only Fashion: What was your first day in Second Life like? What made you stick it out through the learning curve?
Izzie Button: My first day in Second Life I spent reading freebie blogs and SL forums and finding out how everything works, followed by freebie shopping and trying to improve my avatar appearance. I was fascinated by the fact that everything I bought and saw was created by SL users themselves and I was wondering if I could do that too. I went to gaming places and “earned” my first lindens with gambling and I used that money to finance upload costs of my textures I needed to create my first clothing items.

It’s so cold outside, but I am snug as a bug inside the little snuggery from tarte for The Arcade. With a wall of windows facing south I get enough sun to warm up.
Of course, layering is the real secret to warmth. This lovely outfit from PixiCat for Collabor88 is not only warm as the rug that snugs the bug, but it is really an entire wardrobe. Delta Bluesman Bukka White wrote the Fixin’ To Die Blues and later it was covered by Bob Dylan and by Dave Van Ronk. I thought about it yesterday when Second Life® had another auto-update that resulted in immediate crashes when I tried to take a picture. I thought they are fixing me right out of Second Life – each update and “improvement” making my experience more laggy and frustrating. And yes, I did all the requisite attempts to fix it including a clean install. I ended up installing an older update and crossing my fingers. For whatever reason, though, I cannot save a picture to disk without crashing, even in the older version now. The only way I can take pictures is uploading them directly to Flickr®. Oh well, here they are, raw shots that are not even cropped. The clothes are still gorgeous!
When I was camming around I accidentally cammed in on my face though the street light globe. I thought the effect was freaky and fun.
I woke up early and decided to get a jump on my holiday cards. So many people to mail off to! It’s easy to get a little work done when you’ve got so much peace and quiet, so I had to make sure I took advantage of the time. Of course, the cat and dog think otherwise. Continue reading

When going through my recent favorites to choose pictures for this column, I was drawn most to those pictures who gave us slice of life moments, the story-telling pictures that seem so spontaneous despite the amount of scene design and pose setting and all the work that must go into them. All that work is invisible if the picture is done well and it seems as though someone just accidentally caught them at that very moment. I love those pictures though I never do them myself. I admire the creativity and imagination that goes into planning and execution. They often make me smile, sometimes even I even laugh out loud at the predicaments and mishaps they capture. There are far too many great pictures to highlight, so please check out the Gallery that accompanies this column to see some of the other great works that I did not include in this post.

Leonorah Beverly gives us action and a wonderful use of perspective with that snowball heading right for us or for the camera. Notice how the snowball is placed at the sweet spot of the Golden Ratio.
