Michelle Obama has excited the fashion world this past year and has often been compared to another first lady, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, because, like Jackie, she is a fashion trailblazer. With hypercritical attention of the press, most First Ladies opt for well-known established designers and safe colors and designs. Michelle Obama’s choices on Inauguration Day signaled in two ways that she is not going the safe route. First, she chose relatively unknown designers, not opting for the security of an old design house. Secondly, although the silhouettes were classic and certainly safe, the fabrics and colors were bold and adventurous. My choices for this outfit offer an homage to the brilliant color coordination and experimentation she offered for the historic event.
This dress from Little Rebel is chartreuse – a bit more green than the lemongrass she chose. It’s also a much chillier dress and no special lining would make it warm enough for the occasion. However, the above the waist ribbon belt echoes the design and so does the silhouette. What most impressed me, though, was Michelle’s choice of teal shoes and green gloves. I know the first photo I am wearing teal gloves and that is an option – and until it occurred to me to tint the beige gloves to olive, the best one. However, Fleur’s gloves are tintable, so I changed course and tinted the beige to better reflect her choices.
This Viva jacket from Pixel Dolls does not swing as openly and is not as heavily embellished as her coat. It’s also a greater contrast with hers. I added bright yellow tint to get it to coordinate and brighten it a bit. Again, this is more a representation of her bold color choices and strong fashion sense that trying to replicate her outfit with complete accuracy.
The banded collar of her sheath dress was heavily embellished and she wore simple earrings. This dress has a very different neckline that calls for jewelry. The lovely Time necklace and earrings work perfectly.
To finish it all off, the fresh, healthy glow of the Belleza Belle skin gives a feeling of hope and optimism which are always the best of fashion accessories.
