Imagine If Jane Austen Got Angry

150305

This Spring session of The Arcade has one of the most exciting Arcade sets of all time. For once, it’s a good thing to get lots of commons while seeking your rare. You will need several pieces of the common wall to surround your manor house with a beautiful courtyard. Anyway, it’s just an extraordinarily complete collection with 2 houses, an outbuilding, landscaping and interior furnishing, even a well and a wooden cart.

Yesterday was World Book Day. That, combined with the wonderful Primavera in Toscana set from 8f8 at The Arcade got me thinking about my favorite books of the past year.  What rose to the top was Elena Ferrante’s magnificent Neapolitan novels. Now, the novels mainly take place in a poor neighborhood in Naples, not in a rich manor home in Tuscany, but know, we Americans are supposed to think there is no difference, right?

Actually, the wall reminds me so much of the wall surrounding the Spanish military base where I was living with a Spanish family while attending my senior year in Algeciras, Spain. The one difference is that the wall in Spain had flowers on the top, trailing down the white walls. There were always two guards outside with a sign “Todo por la patria” on the wall next to the guard station. Can you imagine an American military base with a wall covered with flowers?

I love the contradictions in this dress and coat from NYU. NYU specializes in minimalist design, the aesthetic beauty of a dress and coat coming from the lines and forms of the clothing, not from embellishment or patterns. The dress has this severe post-war austerity except that slit on the skirt is thoroughly modern and not the least bit austere.

John Freeman of The Australian wrote of Elena Ferrante, “Imagine if Jane Austen Got Angry.” The Neapolitan novels tell the story of two women, from their childhood to adulthood. There is a lot of anger in her novels, but also humor and love. They seem so raw and honest, as though the author cannibalized her life to tell the story, though we cannot know as Elena Ferrante is very private. Still, the narrator in this Neapolitan tetralogy is named Elena and plans to be a writer. In terms of the usual publicity authors relentlessly pursue, she said she did all she needed to do for her book, she wrote it. I love that!

The Angel is in the Details

150302_004

They say the devil is in the details, but there is nothing devilish about this dress.

When Pixicat shared this dress as a Work In Progess on Plurk, I knew I had to have it. The details were so carefully wrought that anyone who loves great craftsmanship would admire the dress, whether it is their personal style or not. A lot of thought went into the design in ways to allow you to wear it as you please. For example, it comes with or without the white blouse, there’s a detachable bow you can opt to leave off, as I did. And then the lacy overskirt can be worn, as I did, or left off, as Gidge did in the previous post. On top of that, the lace overskirt it tintable so you could color it anything your heart desires.

Goodbye Old Friend

Snapshot_001

I was honored to be asked to DJ the first half of the Closing Party for Rouge, the incomparable sim that was the brainchild of Codebastard Redgrave (Codie) and Eshi Otawara. Because Rouge is Red and Red is Codie raison d’être, I knew I had to wear red, just as I did to the opening party back in July, 2008. With its dance poles and feather boa foliage, Rogue is a place to wear your naughty and flirtatious outfits, so I was thrilled that Azul released Likka, a brand new burlesque corset and skirt just in time for the party. How perfect is that.

Snapshot_002

Medieval scholars debated for years about whither art of nature. Eshi Otawara’s answer is art and nature, terraforming the land of Rouge into a work of art. Be sure to check out this photo from Oscar Page. I like it much better than mine.

The Healing Power of Sprites

150225_003

We can imbue talismans with tremendous power through the powers of faith and suggestion. If you believe something will work for you; it often will. Monica Outlander of MiaMai has created in real life and now in Second Life®, a collection of talismanic sprites that  can bring health and happiness to those who invest the power of belief in them. If your worldview is more prosaic and devoid of supernatural beliefs, they can also be enjoyed for their quirky adorability and the come with a magnificent free shelf that can be used to display these sprites, but I think I will also rez a few more of these shelves for otters things as well.

There’s also a home protection sprite hanging on a branch that is equally adorable. The gorgeous house is the Hudson Townhouse from Scarlet Creative and can be found at Collabor88 this month.

A Personal PSA — Take More Pictures

Before I say one word about my outfit, I want to urge you to take more pictures. When you are with your family, arrange yourselves in a huddle and take a picture. When your grandparents are visiting, cozy up and take a picture. When your sister is over for coffee, take a picture. Take more pictures, take them in abundance. Take too many. Take so many you can throw away the bad ones.

I say this because I spent yesterday with a difficulty and heartbreaking task. My friend’s daughter died, her body rejecting the heart she had been given. For whatever reason, that family is not a picture-taking family. In all there were 5 recent pictures of her, all selfies and one good photo taken by someone else. There were no pictures of her with her grandmother, her aunts, her baby brother. This was a close family that spent many weekends and holidays together, and there was not a picture to be had. So I was asked to take those selfies and photoshop them into old photos with her grandmother, her aunts and other family members. It was difficult because there were different exposures, resolutions, lighting and it is so very much less than what should be.

So please, take pictures, take too many of them. Don’t lose your loved ones and not have a picture with them.

So today I am wearing a must have outfit from Gizza. Best of all, it comes as separates, so you can go crazy, mixing, matching and accessorizing with rainbow plus color options. Because they are beautiful fitted to standard sizes, you could wear this sweater with pants from anywhere. The pencil skirt is a closet staple and will work with tops from this sweater to the daintiest chiffon tucked blouses. So, invest!!!

Works from any angle

The reason I took so many pictures here is to show you that from any angle, the PXL SweetLips looks as sweet and luscious as can be.

Speaking of investing. I told you in my review of the PXL SweetLips that I intended to try out the modifiable option that comes in the box and see how it works fitting it to my mouth instead of the easy option of fitting my mouth to the no-mod standard lips. Guess what? It was easy-peasy.

I edited the parts separately so I could make the lip thinner and the mouth wider. I also lowered the lips a tad because my own shape has a slightly longer philtrum. I would try to click the teeth and kept selecting the piercings, so I eventually just slid them out of the way, made my adjustment and slid them back. Voila!

I was feeling very French with the beret and pencil skirt and waifish makeup from Glam Affair – very much the young French college student, so I opted for these elegant flats from Ingenue at Collabor88 and toddled off to a patisserie with espresso bar that I picked up at the last Arcade. Speaking of which, start cleaning your closets and marking your calendars, The Arcade opens on March 1st.

The Sweetest Next New Thing

150220_007

Hart Larsson of PXL Creations has released some new mesh lips and as you can see from Gidge’s post, they are The Next New Thing. For this post, I have only used raw shots, with absolutely no photoshopping because I want you to see why folks are excited about SweetLips.  Interestingly, the look was seamless in Second Life®. I think the bit of shadow is actually my fault. I accidentally tinted the skin instead of the lips and while I thought I brought the tint back to white on top of the Natural applier, I must not have clicked to completely white, so the skin is just a tiny bit darker than it should be.

There is a support page at PXL Creations web site  which if I had looked at first, I would never have made skin red. But I don’t like reading directions. I like to figure it out for myself and it turns out to be easy enough that I figured it out anyway.  Continue reading

Put Your Sweet Lips a Little Closer

150220_002

The new mesh lips from PXL Creations are called SweetLips, which immediately made me think of this song my dad used to sing at barn dances.

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let’s pretend that we’re together all alone
I’ll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low
And you can tell your friend there with you he’ll have to go Continue reading

In the Spirit

150218_007

I am literally in the spirit, the Spirit Charlotta blouse, pants and suspenders from this month’s Collabor88. The blouse comes in multiple versions so it can be worn with or without the suspenders and with other options than the pants. The pants are pleated so they are a bit big around the hips and taper to a cuff that reveals fabric matching the blouse. The suspenders come separately for maximum flexibility. I always like it when separates are truly separate pieces.

150218_010

Scarlet Creative released a lovely townhouse at this month’s Collabor88 and I enjoyed decorating it, mostly with elements from Trompe Loeil, Floorplan. & Consignment, and junk for this month’s Collabor88 as well as some things from Apple Fall and ::db:: that I had in my inventor

That’s How the Boy Gets the Girl in the Movies

150214_003

I wore the Vivianne dress from Lassitude & Ennui (at Collabor88) when I DJ’ed at The Velvet’s Valentine’s Day party. It’s such a romantic dress with it’s froth of lace at the hem. One of my favorite songs I played for the party was “That’s How the Boy Gets the Girl in the Movies” by Emily West. I hope you will play the YouTube® visit.

I heard it happens.
It’s never happened to me.

I stare by the window,
If he’s there, it’s only just a dream
Just a dream.

Birds in the sky will be singing the song.
The sun will be shining when his car pulls up.

Oh, I long for the day and the way it should be.
Expected temptations are waiting for me.

Cause that’s how the boy gets the girl in the movies.
Kisses that make her the star of the show.
He’ll buy you roses and make you feel pretty.
Hold the umbrella when he walks you home.

It’s Hollywood. It’s heaven.
It’s everything perfect above.
When a girl falls in love.

In Which the Blogger Gushes Uncontrollably

15Feb10_007

I fell in love with the Nayra long skirt released by Baistice’s Sissy Pessoa at February’s Collaboir88. Released in a range of colors, it was released with a matching set of sweaters for the modernist fashion of elevating casual elements by mixing them with formal. pieces. There are several reasons I love this skirt in particular. In fact, let me list them.

  1. The pleating allows it to move without texture stretching.
  2. The texture’s details with the pleats highlights, shadows and doubtless make it come alive.
  3. It falls at the natural waist, which I think is the most flattering choice.
  4. It mixes and matches with simplicity as you can see in this s post as I not only use the accompanying sweater that was released by Baiastice, but also with two other tops from a different store.

15Feb10_002

Here I have a much more formal look in rouge.

And this is a sweet, charming old-fashioned look.  Continue reading
