Heat Rises

1220_007

I am blogging early on a Saturday morning – 6:30 AM to be precise. Why so early? Mainly because heat rises. My downstair neighbor heats his apartment so much that the heat rising from below eliminates any need for me to heat, but also dramatically overheats my apartment. It’s 42° outside and I have the windows open and am wearing a little as a person can get away with open windows.

In my Second Life, I can dress more appropriately for the weather in a gorgeous new jacket from Legal Insanity. You know what’s insane? How gorgeous this jacket is, that’s what! I love the details, the cinched waist, the tie belt, the paid accents and inset, the bits of shearling peeking at the edges. It comes in plenty of color options and two prints, the plaid you see and a subtle chevron print. Continue reading

The Final Countdown – Let The Wrapping Begin!

It’s time! Time to wrap up the SL Christmas and get those presents where they belong. The hours are ticking along and with RL time now at a premium, I know most of us will be seeing less of the grid and more of the people who really matter. Continue reading

Thursday Child Is Full of Woe

Girl Thursday is a newer to me store with an intriguing name. I’m wearing a holiday release of a festive cable knit tank top – perfect, cuz I live on the beach.

I am interested in the name, because I want to know what it means. Is it Girl Thursday because it’s not quite as good as Girl Friday?  (You youngsters can Google that shit.) Or is it as in, Thursday’s Child is Full of Woe? Continue reading

Banana Mint

Dec16b_006

I just love the sweater vest from Tee*fy for this round of Collabor88. My Mom would knit me one every year just like them, though she used this super-fine, lightweight yarn that was so soft. I loved them all. Azure Electricteeth layered the sweater vest with an oxford-cloth shirt though she didn’t tuck the shirt in which would have made my mom tsk-tsk and not let me out the door. She was a stickler!

Hunts, Magic Shoes, And Reasons To Log In

This is a true story. I wanted an item at 22769. It was a hunt item. I couldn’t find it. It was one of my morning log in times, and usually I’ve got about 30 minutes to log in, dress, shoot, edit and post. I do this most days. I spent 20 minutes looking, got bitter, happened to find a different item, and left. I remembered that I hate hunts. I did however find this amazing dress, which I wasn’t looking for, for the Invitation Only Hunt? I don’t even know what that is.  But this dress is a total score. Continue reading

Guest Stylist: Maeve Byron

Guest Stylist Maeve Byron

It’s been a while since we have featured a guest stylist here at It’s Only Fashion, but after I ran into Maeve Byron at the Mahrathon this weekend, I had to ask her to volunteer. She said she liked the blog, so of course, I wanted to feature her. Besides, she was a generous supporter of the Mahrathon – which raised 322,000 lindens for Heifer International. Yay!

According to Maeve, “I guess my style puts comfort as the main priority. Although fashion blogs like A Passion For Virtual Fashion, Juicybomb and of course It’s Only Fashion have inspired me, I don’t really jump on cutting edge style; I prefer a more classic look…maybe it’s an age thing. I like to look smart, tasteful, cute and approachable.”

I think she succeeds. Don’t you?

I Gave My Mom a Water Buffalo For Christmas

1215_003

About ten years before my mother died, I discovered the perfect Christmas present for her that I was able to give her year after year. It was one she bragged about up one side of town and down the other. She just loved saying, “My daughter gave me a water buffalo for Christmas.” It just tickled her funny bone and best of all, she loved what the gift was for. Since then, more people in my family have taken to giving bee hives, chickens, pigs, goats and water buffalo for wedding presents, birthday and Christmas by making a contribution to Heifer International on their behalf. You still have time to check out the most important gift catalog in the world.

Heifer International fights poverty in the US and around the world by providing livestock and training so people can become self-reliant. Even better, recipients pledge to pay it forward, giving the first offspring to someone else in their community. It’s a great program and makes for fun, wonderful gifts. At least fun to talk about – because who gets water buffalo?

Winter Coat Love

1214_003While my family was very poor when I was growing up, I seldom felt the pinch of poverty. For one thing, the county I lived in was one of the poorest in the nation so a lot of people were poor. Even with the casinos that have opened since then, a quarter of the population still lives below the poverty level. Poverty is relative, so with so many other people being in the same boat, it was just the way things were.

My parents made a comfortable life for us despite poverty with hunting, gardening, fishing and making everything from soap to candles to clothing. Nearly everything was hand made   – even my hockey sticks and skis. And my winter coats.

Testing…1,2,3

Testing SL to Flickr Snapshots

I thought it might be fun to test the direct to Flickr® photography in Second Life®. Since I wanted to shoot this fabulously minimalist dress from NYU which is on sale for Fifty Linden Friday, I thought this was the perfect time to try it out, cutting out the intermediate steps of cropping my photos in Photoshop and uploading them to Flickr. It seemed to work fine, though the text limit cut off my credits and I had to rewrite them. I just specified 3000 by 3000 for size to get a square picture and lined it up in SL. Since you can see the preview, it’s just a matter of refreshing until you get it framed the way you want it before uploading.

Testing SL to Flickr Snapshots
