The Light at the End of the Tunnel Is a Train

The Light at the End of the Tunnel Is a Train

I went to Misfit Ghetto last night and saw this sign. It comes from Robert Lowell who said “The light at the end of the tunnel is just the light of an oncoming train.” Robert Lowell has been a favorite since I first discovered him in 7th grade. I was shy, a mumbler, constantly admonished to speak louder and my mother made me join the speech team. She believed in meeting challenges head on. I chose Extemporaneous Poetry as my specialty since I loved poetry and my mom made me memorize a poem a week. I figured I could get two for one out of the way.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel Is a Train

For my first competition I drew “For the Union Dead” by Robert Lowell. The imagery bowled me over and I fell in love with his way of writing, though the poem was not without its problems for my 7th grade self. It used the n-word once, in quotes to indicate that was not a word Lowell would have used. It was a word I had never used and was certainly not acceptable. I had thirty minutes to prepare an introduction and decide how to address this dilemma. I punted and inserted the word soldiers instead. You know, as an adult, I think the person who picked the poems that day probably had not read them.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel Is a Train

But also, from hindsight, I don’t mind, because that poem was thrilling to me. If you have seen the film Glory, you know the story memorialized in the statue he describes. But it was not the story, it was the images from phrases like his nose crawling like a snail on the aquarium glass and the yellow dinosaur steamshovels grunting as they work. Most of the poetry I had read (or my mom had chosen for me) had been prettier. She was a big Longfellow, Shelley and Shakespeare fan. Lowell was my introduction to a more robust kind of poetry. He felt rebellious and fierce and I gobbled him up. And yes, he was also bleak and grim and depressive – perfect for adolescence.

Hair Fair Designers — Neveah Niu

VACATION_TIME
It’s Only Fashion: What’s the craziest thing you ever did in Second Life? Most exciting? Silliest? Is there a story you can share that captures your Second Life experience?

Never Niu: OMG, there have been so many silly, exciting and strange moments that have happen to me in second life, I am not sure where to begin with that one. However, I think the most exciting and fun thing I have done is role-play on the Kingdom Of Sand sims. I find it so interesting to see individual’s rp in the heat of moment and just go wherever their imagination takes them. Second Life is such a big place with so many individuals who have big imaginations I love being a part of that.

IOF: What drew you to designing hair? When did you start and what were some of the most significant changes for you?

NN: Well, I am artist by nature. I draw, paint, game and sculpt for enjoyment. I have a degree in design and development where I am fortunate to use my education in both rl and in sl. As an artist you are always looking for different outlets to express yourself and grow. So when I heard about second life, I was drawn to the building and design aspect of second life, where residents could create whatever they liked. I was all in and haven’t looked back since. My Slink Obsession Brings Us Full Circle

150703_004

I’m not obsessed
So don’t forget it
It’s just a silly phase I’m going through

I must confess that clothing appliers amuse me. After all, when I began back in 2007, most clothing was made of textures applied on the avatar’s system layer. Details like buttons and collars and cuffs were usually drawn on and even photo sourced clothing had an air of unreality to it. Flexis and sculpts added depth and form, but they did not add verisimilitude. And then came mesh and there was a revolution in fashion where most of the design effort was focused on the forms, the shape, the buttons, collars and other details and the fabrics were added later. Because the barriers to entry for mesh creation are higher in terms of skills and software, several designers retreated and retired. Now that mesh bodies have replaced the system body for thousands of us, we are back to applying textures, this time on the mesh body. It does seem like we have come full circle – though with a distinct revolution in quality.

For example, this swimsuit from MiaMai is put on with an applier. It’s from the quarterly My Slink Obsession event that opens tomorrow. Certainly there are lots of mesh swimsuits and even several that don’t flash unsuspecting bystanders, though I think they are in the minority. However an applied swimsuit has its advantages, especially for those bystanders when one is sitting down and shifting positions in a chair. Another reason to love appliers is how much easier it makes layering. All of us have struggled with trying on a dozen blouses trying to fine one that will fit under a jacket and longed for the days of system clothing when layering was as easier as one, two, three. This brings back that ease coupled with the higher quality of the mesh body.

BYRNE is a new to me clothing line by ByrneDarkly Cazalet. Some of you may be familiar with her because of her involvement in Kamera Klub, the monthly photographic event that has produced events like the BOSCH IN HELL recreation of The Garden of Earthly Delights or from the Tart Gallery. She is an occasional denizen of The Velvet where I DJ, so when I saw the store name BYRNE and inspected to see who was the greater, I was pleased and kind of amazed she found time for even more creative endeavors. She does not have a huge selection of clothing yet, but I liked what I found. She likes colors and prints and is a bold designer. This is actually one of her more subdued prints. The dress is a lovely naturalistic pink and green that makes you think of a lovely young forest with a splash of roses on the front. When you purchase the dress you get four dresses – one with pink roses, one with green roses, both with regular and materials finishes. I wore the Materials version which reacts so beautifully to light.

Under Electric Candlelight

The new Lola dress from Baiastice for Collabor88 is every kind of summertime perfection with wonderful summer colors and prints, lovely design details that highlight the feminine shape and flatter every figure. I love the rich texture of the ribbon inset, collar and bow. Even better, with the fitted mesh, it fits perfectly.

El Tango De Roxanne

First there is desire
Then… passion!
Then… suspicion!
Jealousy! Anger! Betrayal!
Where love is for the highest bidder,
There can be no trust!
Without trust,
There is no love!
Jealousy.
Yes, jealousy…
Will drive you… mad! Continue reading

New, Not Improved

150511_004

Do you know what would make me happy? If Flickr went back to the way it used to be – back before Yahoo purchased it and started to make it more and more like Tumblr. I want to hit a next button and wait for a new page. I do not want infinite scrolling. I hate infinite scrolling. It gets laggy and slow after a few page downs. If I click on a picture to see it, when I go back, I go back to the top, not to where I was. Does anyone know some secret way to have the old Flickr? I used to avoid it by using Flickr in Spanish, but they updated the Spanish version to their new horrible system, too. Now they have “improved” it again and it’s beyond irritating. Why do services that people like and use think they need to completely upend their design? When it’s working and popular, why change it?

Into the Light is the theme for this month’s Collabor88. If you love romantic pastels, this is the month for you. Among the highlights are the fabulous top from StoriesYCo by Flowey and this skirt from Tres Blah. The top comes with matching flirty shorts and the skirt comes with coordinating cropped sweatshirts. However, since Collabor88 designers work with a common color palette and theme, it seems that the point is finding new combinations as well. The beautiful quill incense burner is from {anc} and is also from Collabor88. The tea set with books is from dust bunny and was in the March Arcade session.

The Zen of Ironing

150331_004

For me, ironing has always been a peaceful relaxing activity. I would set up the ironing board in the living room by the couch and have the unearned in a basket on one side and an empty basket on the other to place the newly ironed pieces. I would lower the ironing board so I could sit on the couch and watch something on television while I ironed and work away. It’s quiet, peaceful and easy to do, so ironing was a favorite chore.
