Do It Yourself They Said, It’ll Be Fun They Said

I got here because I’m a sucker for Pinterest and doing it myself. I know I don’t have any wallpaper hanging experience but how hard could it be? There are 123456734186 “life hacks” for hanging wall paper and I felt certain I could slap this up before I ran out to do a bit of shopping today. No really, I just knew I could do it quickly.  Now you’ve caught me mid-fall, about to faceplant or assplant or who knows what? How’d I get here?

Well it started simply enough…. Continue reading

And Now, I Can Relax

My typist told me she spent yesterday spoiling herself with a mini-spa day and so I told her that I thought I deserved one too. Luckily, she supports my need to be spoiled and pampered ridiculously. But I have to admit, soaking my feet in this amazing tub from Second Spaces is soothing enough that I’m not sure what I felt so tense about in the first place.

I’ve given away all of my gifts, I think, I can’t figure out if I missed anyone. If you’re still dithering, don’t forget that The Arcade is not only open – but all of the items you get there are TRANS. I’ve gone to Arcade many times for gifts, it’s a great spot for picking up items to give away to folks and there’s something for everyone there this round.  Continue reading

a balloon with a broken string

“I'd be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”

“I’d be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”
― Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

I wanted to be sure to choose the perfect lingerie for this new sheer tunic Zaara released at Collabor88. I had this great set from Luxuria for Fifty Linden Friday. It’s still available, just not 50 lindens. I love the colors and thought it a perfect set for my new tunic. It applies to both Maitreya and Slink bodies, so it’s very flexible.
“I'd be smiling and chatting away, and my mind would be floating around somewhere else, like a balloon with a broken string.”

Black Bantam, a new to me label, released this lovely Autumn Dreams Balloon Chair, a fantasy piece that I took for a ride on the Linden Ocean.  Stacey Oller is the designer for Black Bantam and may be more familiar to folks under her fashion label Pink Acid. The chair contains several poses and animations for men and women (and kids) and comes in blue as well.

The cultivation and perfection of human beings

“The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings.”In The One-Straw Revolution, Masanobu Fukuoka wrote “The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings.” Like many people, including our founders, he has this idea that only farmers do noble labor. This is all very nice and romantic, but there is an ugly side to it. We see that same idea when politicians call rural America the heartland or “real America” as though we city dwellers were inferior to them. Thomas Jefferson was even more explicit, saying working for a wage and was corrupting and industry would destroy American, meanwhile those who labor in the earth are the “chosen people of god” and the only people he thought should have political power.

The belief our founders had in the superiority of the agrarian life and agrarian people had profound effects on our Constitution. That belief extends to exaggerating the political power of rural states and rural voters in many ways. One Wyoming voter counts as much as four New York voters when voting for president. It is even more inequitable in the Senate, a Vermont voter getting counting 30 times more than a New York voter. The United States Senate is the least democratic legislative chamber in the developed world. The 38 million people who live in the nation’s 22 smallest states, including Wyoming, are represented by 44 senators. The 38 million residents of California are represented by two senators.

I think about these things when I am hopping about the grid looking for a nice place to shoot a picture.

The More I Love Gatsby

Sometimes it’s the revisiting of words you’ve glossed over that reveals nuggets you hadn’t previously divined. You spin the words through your brain, and one time across them is different than the others. What’s changed? Not the words. The words are the same. But something in you caused them to give up a greater meaning than the last time you passed them by. Continue reading

Voyeur

I can’t believe how much time I lost and now it’s almost Halloween and there are about 1000 Halloween things I haven’t done or worn! SO MANY THINGS! I love them all, want to do them all and then some. I don’t even care how silly they are, I am a fiend for Halloween. Continue reading

Color Speaks All Languages

Colors speak all languages.A little over 300 years ago, Joseph Addison wrote, “Colours speak all languages, but words are understood only by such a people or nation.” He was writing about the pleasures of the imagination and arguing that the written word incites the imagination more than imagery. He also suggested that how enthusiastically people respond to the written word is influenced by their capacity for engaging their imagination while reading. I like the idea that color speaks all languages, but it is hooey.

First of all, even within people speaking the same language, men and women see color differently. Women see more shades of color than men and describe the colors differently. Beyond that, colors have cultural values that vary from place to place. There is a very cool interactive chart here. White is the color of mourning in East and of bridal innocence in the West. Red is lucky in China and dangerous in Europe and North America.
Colors speak all languages.

However, no matter what the cultural subtext color choices may bring, no one can deny that this gorgeous Ethnic Jacket from Purple Moon will being an entire conversation to your closet.
Colors speak all languages.I paired it with this gorgeous pencil skirt from Maitreya. The skirt details including the black back and the leather detailing make it seem to have been made for this jacket.

and it’s hard at the end of the day

And it's hard at the end of the day

When Sarah McLachlan wrote Angel, she was not thinking of the sort you might see in a Sunday school lesson, but one more like this perhaps. The song is about seeking comfort and escape from life’s pain through a needle, through heroin addiction to be precise. Inspired in specific by Jonathan Melvoin of Smashing Pumpkins who died of an overdose about 20 years ago, the more general inspiration came from McLachlan’s own experience of seeking comfort and reassurance from other drugs. McLachlan, when speaking about the song, seems to think the feelings of inadequacy, of insecurity, of alienation are part of the music industry. Personally, I think they are part of life.

And it's hard at the end of the day

there’s always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memories seep from my veins
let me be empty
and weightless and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

in the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear

I thoughy this blood-tipped “angelic” gown paired with the needle-sharp Say wings from Glam Affair would be a great representation of McLachlan’s “angel” whose comfort is only temporary unless, of course, it is the final comfort of death. Incidentally, Maylee Oh of The Secret Store who made this gown also made a video of her weight painting and texturing it and while I have no idea what she is doing it is strangely hypnotic to watch.

And it's hard at the end of the day

The gown is a gorgeous brocade with a delicate blood tip. You see more red in this picture than the other because of the red projector I was using to light the scene. The wings are white and plum and the projector lights them as well. I actually selected the plum textures in the wings and tinted them bright red to go with the dress and the jacket.

And it's hard at the end of the day

My shoes are from Hucci and are incredibly elegant. I love how the leather comes to a point and echoes the feathers and the wings.

And it's hard at the end of the day

I always wear lingerie under my clothes. After all, sometimes when you TP in, your clothes seem to arrive a few seconds after you do. Luxuria is my go to brand.

And it's hard at the end of the day

A chose Truth’s Anouk hair style with the color-change bands and Donna Flora’s Julia set with rubies.

And it's hard at the end of the day

My makeup comes from Glam Affair’s newest release Mavi, a Lelutka mesh head applicator. I opted for the brightest, reddest lipstick.
