hallucinatory heat

150801_006

So it is hot again. One of the joys of living in the Pacific Northwest is avoiding blistering heat, but thanks to global climate change, I am afraid that may become a thing of the past. However, I suppose I should keep it in perspective. It is far hotter elsewhere.

Most of the time, when you read about someplace deathly hot with temperatures in excess of 120° Fahrenheit, you can also add “but at least it is dry heat” which might be small comfort at that temperature, but it still makes a difference.

This was made very clear when I read a news article that left me reeling and think I should be grateful. There is a city in Iran, on the Persian Gulf, that reached a Heat Index of 165° degrees – that is heat of 115° and a dew point of 90. Heat and humidity, that is just not fair. Now my response to heat is to dress lightly, so imagine that heat in a burqa. It makes me very grateful for my much lower intensity heat discomfort.  Continue reading

Read Any Good Books Lately?

150629_005

Foxes has released this beautifully fitted and textured dress in a mind-numbing 24 different versions from sparked to ombres to solids with standard sizing and sizing for specific mesh bodies. Obviously, the Foxes creator has given up on sleep.

The long list for the  Man Booker prize was announced yesterday and I have only read one of them. That is one reason it is my favorite book list. It goes beyond bestseller lists and borders, elevating excellent fiction from all over the world. Usually by the time the next list is out, I have read my way through the list. It is changing, though, until 2013, the authors had to come from the Commonwealth and now it is open to authors from any country so long as they write in English and their books are published in the UK. For the first time there are five American writers on the list. Will this change the complexion of the list? I don’t know. I hope not.

I have been on a lucky streak lately, reading several good books in a row. Right now I am reading The Sellout by Paul Beatty, an hilarious satire of post-racial America. The protagonist’s father is killed by the police in what is supposed to be a ridiculously senseless and satirical example of police violence. Unfortunately, reality has surpassed satire on that score.

And The Greatest Of These Is…

Sometimes you have one of those posts where you’re going to say a lot of things and then you realize you don’t have the mental energy for the follow up conversations that will happen?

This is one of those posts.

I’m travelling and thought I’d kick off with some swimming but I wandered into this place, and now I think my travels might just end up being a tour of LEA. Not the worst thing, but the windlights are hell on our skin.

“Writing is an exploration. We start with nothing and learn as we go.”

Damselfly Marnie_001

Damselfly Marnie hair and Azuchi Suma dress

If you have been following this blog lately, you know that Hair Fair happened and while it was happening, I have been publishing interviews with Hair Fair designers. I got a notecard back from one on Sunday. It was from Shyla Honey of Damselfly and began with an apology because she had been out of town for two weeks and wanted me to know she had not been ignoring my notecard queries. I didn’t read the rest because I was in a bit of hurry.

I popped over to Hair Fair to buy the two of her Hair Fair releases I had not already purchased and pick up the gifts and shot my pictures of all her hairs. Then I opened the notecard back up and realized that the note was all she sent, reasonably assuming since Hair Fair was ending, I would not continue the interviews. Oh well, at least I have all the pictures.

I decided to wear this dress from Azuchi because it has that  huge ruffle across the bodice that normally conflicts with hair and Damselfly hair is often long and curly and exactly the sort of hair likely to cause problems with a bodice ruffle. Not that I was looking for trouble, but I chose it because a few design decisions were made that address that problem well. You will note that you get the full ruffle, it has gathers in it and makes the bold design statement, but it is crafted to lay close to the bodice, avoiding conflicts. It’s a bit of trompe l’oeil and it works well.

A League Of My Own – Because Willis Took My Title

Every month after I pay tier I pick out something I want to get, usually something not small and treat myself. This month my goal was more appliers for my Lelutka face. I wear ARIA most of the time now (I feel like I should take the others for a stroll more often) and I’ve got a small closet of skins for it but my desire is that I can wear ANY of my favorite’s ANY TIME. I don’t want to take my head off to wear you.  Continue reading

Hair Fair Designers — MissAllSunday Lemon

I have been wearing Wasabi Pills since 2008, though the first year I was wearing Wasabi Pills skin and then later, when she began wearing hair, I started wearing her hair, too. Between Gidge and me, there are nearly 200 posts with Wasabi Pills hair. I do not know if I was one of the first to blog her items, but I do remember that when I first blogged her skin, she sent me a warm and friendly note. I also remember how when mesh hit the grid, she hit the ground running as if all that time before mesh was just preparation for mesh when she really got into creating a new level.

Lingerie Maker To Her Royal Highness…Or Something

I’m picky in my SL. Pixel Gidge is not low rent. I suppose I could role play low rent by WHY. I only want the best, the things I know aren’t junk. Because of that, there are some brands I will literally wear the hell out of, that’s because they’re always going to be high quality and I don’t even have to WONDER how they will look on me.

Take for instance, LUXURIA. In my little fantasy I keep Roslin locked away in a tower and she’s frantically sewing new lingerie for me to wear. I’ll feed her well but no one else can have my pretties. Luckily for you, that’s just a fantasy but I do covet her pretties very hard. She nails it every time she releases, sometimes smoldering sexy, sometimes adorable girl next door cute. Continue reading

Bandana Day 2015… The End Is Here

It’s Bandana Day, the day we take off our hair just for a day, to show respect for those who have to do without. We have the luxury in SL to be anything, do anything, wear anything. In our real lives we’re constrained by biology in ways many people never talk about. Illness, disability, these things impact our real lives but in SL people can get away from them, ignore them and be free from the constraints that reality places upon us.

But for one day we take off our hair to remember that beauty isn’t about hair, it isn’t about a thing you can see. Beauty is about who you are inside.

Hair is the ribbon on the package. It’s what inside the package that matters.

Hair Fair 2015 wraps up today. It’s your last chance to contribute to this amazing event by shopping at the wonderful shops that are participating. I hope you make it over if you haven’t yet.

I hope to see more of you without your hair today. I’m so proud of everyone I’ve seen on the feeds already.

Happy Sunday everyone.

All the Donuts Have Names That Sound Like Prostitutes

150514_002

This Prey jacket for Penumbra Spring Summer Fashion Week goes over a coordinating corset. It seems like a capelet with short sleeves. It has long points that drop down and  from which a silver spikes are suspended. Here you can see the point drops to the mid back.

I have spent a good portion of my life on buses; school buses, tour buses, Greyhound and Trailways buses and public transit buses. Of course, that means I have also spent a good portion of my life waiting for buses.

150514_001

Among the many places I have waited, the most interesting, entertaining, freaky, funny, scary and downright wild place is Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis on Saturday night. I would get off work at the planetarium just as the demi-monde was coming to life, late enough that missing one bus meant a long wait for the next one. A woman alone was often presumed to be on the stroll, so I had the “pleasure” of turning down many propositions. I am told that the infamous Block E where I would wait has been leveled and a new entertainment mall has replaced it. I suppose that would make for a more comfortable wait for the bus, but there was something vibrant, vital and exciting about Hennepin that I hope is never lost.

Of course, if this were Hennepin there would be at least three level of signs on every building and hundreds of people on the sidewalk.
