A Wicked Case of Carpal Tunnel

A wicked case of carpal tunnel is keeping me pretty quiet as I don’t want to type more than I have to.

So, in summary, new cocktail dresses and evening clutches from Baiastice. Gorgeous and you need them – they’re at Collabor88. New hair from TRUTH. A great up do – especially for bloggers – SHOW OFF THOSE EARRINGS!

I forgot to wear earrings though.

I blame the carpal tunnel.

Yo!

0111_001

I am not all of sudden adopting a new slang vernacular. Instead, I want to alert you to a stunning jazz album from Roberto Fonseca. The album is called Yo! and fittingly is an exploration of Fonseca’s roots and inspirations. It’s one of my favorite albums of 2013. I hope you take the time to listen. I am certain you will enjoy it.

It Was A Dark And Stormy Morning

Thunder and dark clouds rolled in from the sea as I tried to get myself together this morning. How am I supposed to be inspired to wake up and be pretty when the world is so gloomy?

It is especially difficult to get up since I got this new bed from Scarlet Creative – she knows what a girl likes, comfy pillows and fluffy blankets make my bed too wonderful to get out of, especially today. You can pick this up at COLLABOR88 along with this hair from CLAWTOOTH.  Continue reading

The Art of Light and Shadow

0109_011

I wonder if the artists of Second Life® are chagrined to see their creative impulses and efforts reduced to a background for a fashion blogger’s photos. I also wonder about the relative support for art in SL. For retail events like Collabor88, there usually is a horde of people waiting for the clock to tick over to midnight, a collective “Open! Open! Open! Open! Open! Open!” prayer offered up to Commerce, the god of Second Life. Has anyone been unable to teleport into an art exhibit because the sim is full?

But Second Life is no different than real life. For many people, their choices in fashion and home decor are their forms of artistic expression and appreciation. Art for art’s sake is often a luxury – one that is disappearing from our schools and our cities. So, I do wonder about art in SL and the artists and how they feel. Is it wrong to use a piece of art as a backdrop? I don’t know. It might get people to go see the art, to appreciate the effort, the imagination, the inventiveness. Or maybe it just gets more people to go pose in front of it. Who knows?

0109_014

I frequently check out all the LEA sims – one after another – to see what is new. I was struck by the constructs at LEA29 and how the lighting makes the visitor part of the art. This is not the best example, but for some reason every time I tried to take a picture from the other angle, I crashed. After three crashes, I decided that you all just need to go see for yourselves.

0109_013These pictures are from the central gallery. Asked about her exhibit, the artist FreeWee Ling said, “The central part of the sim is more or less a gallery space, but the rest is for a sort of uneasy paranoid landscape with the occasional alien showing up here and there. Like the little mobile cafe is currently manned by an alien chef bot.” The exhibit is not completely finished. She has a couple more days of work before it’s done, but you should go and soon because she only has the sim for the month of January. Don’t delay and miss this wonderful interplay of light, shadow and form.

Grumpy Greta or This is not a store

14.01.09

Whenever I was in a foul mood, my mother would say, “Don’t be a Grumpy Greta.” I figure Mom should Greta for her alliterative name because Dad was altogether too fond of Greta Garbo. Oddly enough, according to ancestry.com, Dad and Greta Garbo were 2nd cousins twice removed. Who knew? Well, I am a Grumpy Greta this morning and it is all because of creator profiles. Actually it is one creator’s profile, but since the problem is so common, I will not name the store or creator. After all, if there are literally dozens who do this, why point to only one?

14.01.09

This is where the store owner’s profile pick takes me. Please note this is not a store. This is a house. It is a lovely house, but it’s not made by the creator. I checked. It’s a LAQ house by Mallory Cowan. I did not go inside because I don’t go in other people’s house uninvited. That is not quite 100% true. I did teleport into someone’s house before being booted. That happened when I followed this same creators SLURL from Marketplace. So to recap, the Marketplace store link goes to someone else’s house where there is a 10 second security orb ready to toss you out and the profile store link goes to the creator’s home. No store at all. There is another store listed in the profile, but that is for resale of breedables, not what I was looking for either. The store does not show in Search – perhaps the creator cannot afford the 30 lindens to pay for listing in search because no one can find the store to buy anything.

Mixing Things Up in Both Lives

jan03_001

I should probably not be surprised how much my Second Life® taste reflect my first life taste, but I am. It is most noticeable in my home decor which in both lives is a mix of neutrals and brights and modern, retro and industrial. For example, my desk and bookcases are a bold industrial chic combination of steel and red laminate, my couch a modern neutral sage, my art a mix of 19th century graphs and photos with modern abstract prints and retro posters. It should not work, but it does. I think the same happens in-word with the bright colors of the retro plates and modern prints and the neutral table and industrial chandelier. In clothing, I have more than one bold Pucci-inspired print.

If on a winter’s night a traveler

13 Dec 27

If on a winter’s night a traveler,
outside the town of Malbork,
leaning from the steep slope,
within fear of wind and vertigo,
looks down in the gathering shadow,
in a network of lines that enlace,
in a network of lines that intersect,
on a carpet of leaves illuminated by the moon,
around an empty grave –
What story down there awaits its end?

13 Dec 27

If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler is a short miracle of a book written by Italo Calvino. I am thinking of rereading it again for perhaps the tenth time. It’s written so beautifully it feels like poetry. In fact, the chapter titles, as you can see above, seem to make a poem. But the real poetry is the evocative language and the deep, authentic love of language that Calvino reveals.

The novel begins in a railway station, the locomotive huffs, steam from a piston covers the opening of the chapter, a cloud of smoke hides part of the first paragraph. In the odor of the station there is a passing whiff of station café odor. There is someone looking throughout he befogged glass, he open the glass door of the bar, everything is misty inside, too, as if seen by nearsighted eyes, or eyes irritated by coal dust. The pages of the book are clouded like the windows of an old train, the cloud of smokes on the sentences. It is a rainy evening; the man enter the bark he unbuttons his damp overcoat; a cloud of steam enfold him; a whistle dies away along tracks that are glistening with rain, as far as the eye can see.

From Chapter One of If on a winter’s night a traveler

Barrier Methods

If there is anything you learn growing up in the land of the ice and snow, it’s that you need to stay dry and keep the wet cold off of you. Layers, and the right ones are the key. You’ll get cold, but you won’t be TOO miserable by the time you get home to peel off  your frozen outerwear and warm back up.

Being warm is a bugaboo for me. As a child, we had a house with out insulation. After the blizzard hit, we spent many nights sleeping in every item of clothing we owned, on the floor in front of the fireplace.

So, I won’t be cold. Not ever, if I can help it. Continue reading

Thursday Child Is Full of Woe

Girl Thursday is a newer to me store with an intriguing name. I’m wearing a holiday release of a festive cable knit tank top – perfect, cuz I live on the beach.

I am interested in the name, because I want to know what it means. Is it Girl Thursday because it’s not quite as good as Girl Friday?  (You youngsters can Google that shit.) Or is it as in, Thursday’s Child is Full of Woe? Continue reading

Banana Mint

Dec16b_006

I just love the sweater vest from Tee*fy for this round of Collabor88. My Mom would knit me one every year just like them, though she used this super-fine, lightweight yarn that was so soft. I loved them all. Azure Electricteeth layered the sweater vest with an oxford-cloth shirt though she didn’t tuck the shirt in which would have made my mom tsk-tsk and not let me out the door. She was a stickler!
