Petit Chat at Fashion Week

140914_003

Trinity Yazimoto of Petit Chat is doing something intriguing with her textiles in her Fashion Week collection. She is texturing her clothing with fabrics created from Second Life® photos that she took. In Sweet Mnemosyne, the outfit I am wearing, she using a picture of a woman in a giant bird cage in a field of flowers. I am excited to see someone using Second Life to create clothing textures as it is something new that I have not seen before.

Old School, New School

083014_005

There’s only a few designers with the confidence in their design aesthetic and creative skills to resist the tides of change while simultaneously surfing the waves. Monica Outlander is one of those artists. Her new MiaMai Black Label collection is the perfect exemplar of that duality of leading and trailing edge design.

What do I mean by that? Well, she is using appliers for Slink Mesh attachments to enhance her clothing. Meanwhile, she provides system layers for people who use the default avatar. She is using mesh in many creative ways. Meanwhile, she will use flexi-prims when they suit the design better. It is that flexibility that leads her to use whatever method best suits the design – not just the newest method, that shows confidence and commitment to her own vision.

My Favorite Hair Fair Bandanas (plus a few I made)

Once a year, us non-creators are challenged to toss our bandanas in the ring along with other creators such as Lelutka, TuttiFruti, MiaMai and others. For me, it’s always a fresh reminder of why I am not a creator, but I manage to pull something out my hat (or bandana).

From Blogger to Creator

jul03_002

I am always excited when a blogger becomes a clothing designer. I think of Milla Michanaga who formed MichaMi and Elysium Elide who started elymode and recognize that both of them focused long and hard on construction quality. I think that, being bloggers, they had this pre-formed set of standards that created a daunting hurdle to overcome before they began to release. Having noted construction flaws in other work, they felt an obligation to do as they say and held themselves to higher standards. So, when Thalia Heckroth™ told me she was moving into clothing design, I was excited. This is her first release and I am pleased to say she continues the tradition.

Second Life Synchronicity or Ballaké

jul01_002

Second Life fashion is full of moments of synchronicity and this is one. It all started with the dress from Baiastice. It was released in many solid colors and prints, but I was most drawn to this earth-toned batik. I was fidgeting about, trying to choose hair and MiaMai released some gorgeous turbans with an Afro-centric inspiration and this tobacco version is perfect with the dress. Meanwhile, Kunglers released a necklace in a coffee color and of course, coffee and tobacco are the peanut butter and jelly of louche lotus-eaters. And then, if that were not enough, PXL Creations released a Jazz quartet of skins for Rhapsody. All events have no causal bearing on each other, but they are uncannily in synchronicity.

The combination of pieces made me think of Ballaké, a classic of African Jazz by Bembeya Jazz National— after all, Jazz developed in America from African roots and American music traditions. Then it migrated back to Africa and found a new iteration. These pieces draw their inspirations from Indonesia and Africa but are modified and changed in translation just as the music was. Gin & Tonic

jun29_002

The bright lemon and lime colors in the top and skirt from Tee*fy make me happy.  It makes me think of hot summer days and cold summer drinks.  I have a real love for gin & tonic and that crushed fresh lime is so wonderful. I love salads made with some fresh squeezed lemon juice or lime juice and generally buy a 3 pound bag of lemons every month. I used to buy about a dozen limes every month, too, but they have gotten too expensive, doubling in price since last year.

Remembering Squinternet

jun05_005

I probably would not be organizing Fashion For Life if it were not for Squinternet. It was in an effort to get funds for her treatment and nursing that I organized Love Donna Flora which probably is why folks looking for an organizer this year thought of me. A lot of the time when I am working on this and feeling frustrated, I think of her and take a deep breath and carry on. She would want me to because she loved Fashion For Life.

OK, Squint loved Fashion. She went to the runway shows and participated in the events because she loved them. But Fashion For Life was special to her – even more so when she got cancer. She also loved Second Life finding support and sustenance through her hard times. She charged a small group of her friends with the task of taking care of her store, keeping it open and keeping her alive in this pixel world.

Monica Outlander is one of Squinternet’s dearest friends. In an act of extraordinary generosity, she put aside her own work during Squint’s final month and acted as her hands so some of those wonderfully imaginative designs that were tucked inside Squint’s lively brain could be realized in out world. For Fashion For Life, she has created new exclusive versions and will release them only at Fashion For Life – at 100% donation. She will also reprise her gown for Love Donna Flora – an exclusive that will only be at Fashion For Life.

But in preparing for Fashion For Life a treasure was found. Monica suggested that some of Squint’s recent jewelry be sold at 100% donation at Fashion For Life. While searching for the folders to pack into the vendors, more copies were found with different colors of stones – not quite finished but all the prims and textures were complete. A little bit of effort to finish them up and three new, previously unreleased jewelry sets were finished. All the prims and textures are from Squinternet, the only assistance was placing some textures on the few prims that had not been completed.
