Join Hands For Nepal

150512_006

Perhaps because Second Life® is very much an intentional community, a self-selected universe of seekers, its people seem to have internalized John Donne’s extraordinary claim “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…” On April 25th, a bell tolled in Nepal. An earthquake and its aftershocks killed nearly 2000 people and fractured the infrastructure of the country. Because Second Life’s residents are “involved in mankind”, they responded quickly. Today a fundraiser opened to raise money to help feed the people of Nepal though the UN’s World Food Program.  With another aftershock injuring over two thousand people just last night, the urgency of their need is compelling.

Join Hands, a new group formed to leverage the efforts of the SL community to respond to real world needs has organized the Fashion For Food (Join Hands for Nepal) event. There are many details about the event in Inara Pey’s great blog post complete with pictures from the event venue. With a bold and effective choice, the organizers chose to have the sim build reflect the damage of an earthquake and Inara Pey has several great picture of the venue.

Mami Jewell of Azul is one of those creators who often steps up to offer items to help. For Fashion for Food, she has released three different items. One is the short color block mini that is not in her usual formal style. I was happy to see it as it was perfect for DJ’ing last night. The black and teal combination and simple geometry inspired me to wear the lovely white, mint and yellow geometric nail polish from Nylon Outfitters for this month’s Collabor88 – and that led me to run with yellow for my accessories including these great shoes I got at the 21 Shoe event. I suppose it is cruel to show them since they were available for one day only – on the 21st. But I hope that inspires you to mark that date and remind yourself to check out the event. Participating stores offer two-for-one shoe exclusives for that day, but they are not available after the event.

Some big yellow earrings from Glam Affair and a lovely hair style from Exile help complete my outfit. This lovely skin from Glam Affair for Collabor88.

The World Food Program has three main goals under its Nepal earthquake response:
deliver food to survivors and those who need it most,
provide emergency operation assistance on a massive scale, and
help the humanitarian aid community with relief hub services.

Not everyone wants to contribute through events and would rather give their support directly in their first life. You can donate directly to the World Food Program Nepal relief here.

Bloom

150423_005

The bright yellow linen pants from Faster Pussycat and the loose white button-down shirt from erratic were a simple, but colorful outfit that hopefully is not lost in the colorful profusion of prints at Blossom the texture explosion at LEA22.

Taxi!

150422_003

I stopped by XIN, a sim I found in the Destination Guide. It’s a seedy urban sim,  just what I was looking for to complement the punk out fit from Emery for Collabor88.  The outfit features a sleeveless tank dress and a jean jacket with knit sleeves.

Magnolias and the Lilies of the Field

150324_003
One of the surprises when I moved to Oregon were the magnificent magnolia trees. I had seen them in pictures, of course, but I thought of them as southern trees, not trees to flourish in the Pacific Northwest. But flourish they do. They are in bloom now.

Magnolias have such a grandiose beauty, without fear of being gaudy or flamboyant. They just are what they are. They don’t hide their exuberance, their size or their extravagance. It reminds me of one of my favorite Bible verses, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;they toil not, neither do they spin, yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

The scarf that is belted to this dress from NYU reminds me a bit of the exuberant magnolia petals. With a color-change HUD, there are 10 plain or 10 print scarf options. The dress itself comes in 10 colors that match the scarf options.

Goodbye Old Friend

Snapshot_001

I was honored to be asked to DJ the first half of the Closing Party for Rouge, the incomparable sim that was the brainchild of Codebastard Redgrave (Codie) and Eshi Otawara. Because Rouge is Red and Red is Codie raison d’être, I knew I had to wear red, just as I did to the opening party back in July, 2008. With its dance poles and feather boa foliage, Rogue is a place to wear your naughty and flirtatious outfits, so I was thrilled that Azul released Likka, a brand new burlesque corset and skirt just in time for the party. How perfect is that.

Snapshot_002

Medieval scholars debated for years about whither art of nature. Eshi Otawara’s answer is art and nature, terraforming the land of Rouge into a work of art. Be sure to check out this photo from Oscar Page. I like it much better than mine.

The Healing Power of Sprites

150225_003

We can imbue talismans with tremendous power through the powers of faith and suggestion. If you believe something will work for you; it often will. Monica Outlander of MiaMai has created in real life and now in Second Life®, a collection of talismanic sprites that  can bring health and happiness to those who invest the power of belief in them. If your worldview is more prosaic and devoid of supernatural beliefs, they can also be enjoyed for their quirky adorability and the come with a magnificent free shelf that can be used to display these sprites, but I think I will also rez a few more of these shelves for otters things as well.

150225_001

There’s also a home protection sprite hanging on a branch that is equally adorable. The gorgeous house is the Hudson Townhouse from Scarlet Creative and can be found at Collabor88 this month.

That’s How the Boy Gets the Girl in the Movies

150214_003

I wore the Vivianne dress from Lassitude & Ennui (at Collabor88) when I DJ’ed at The Velvet’s Valentine’s Day party. It’s such a romantic dress with it’s froth of lace at the hem. One of my favorite songs I played for the party was “That’s How the Boy Gets the Girl in the Movies” by Emily West. I hope you will play the YouTube® visit.

I heard it happens.
It’s never happened to me.

I stare by the window,
If he’s there, it’s only just a dream
Just a dream.

Birds in the sky will be singing the song.
The sun will be shining when his car pulls up.

Oh, I long for the day and the way it should be.
Expected temptations are waiting for me.

Cause that’s how the boy gets the girl in the movies.
Kisses that make her the star of the show.
He’ll buy you roses and make you feel pretty.
Hold the umbrella when he walks you home.

It’s Hollywood. It’s heaven.
It’s everything perfect above.
When a girl falls in love.

All that is solid melts into air

Snapshot

Art has many purposes; one is to make us think. If the greatness of art is measured by how much we think about it, Whiskey Monday is a great artist. It is difficult for a virtual artist like Whiskey Monday to get first life recognition for Second Life® art, but it is not impossible. I certainly think her work merits exposure in the broader world beyond our pixel borders.

Meanwhile, it is good to know that the powers that be in our world recognize her importance and have granted her LEA10 – one of the Linden Endowment for the Arts sims, to create art for the coming month. She’s working away and generously allows people to go there and use her builds in their photos.

Snapshot

Where I first saw this build, I thought  of “Things Fall Apart”, the title of the book by China Achebe that a lot of us read in high school. By the way, if you have not read it, you should. I thought of coming undone, falling apart, coming apart at the seams; metaphors for the fragility of life. I do get the sense that Monday is tackling the big questions with her work.

Then I thought of creative destruction and Karl Marx’s quote, “All that is solid melts into air.” Marx believed the cycle of innovation, recession, then innovation, the boom and bust, would lead to the eventual collapse of capitalism. Free market fundamentalists love creative destruction believing it always leads to innovation that will always lead to more productivity and more wealth and so on. The computer destroyed the typewriter industry, factories closed and people were laid off. That is creative destruction. All that was solid about the typewriter industry has certainly melted into air. Even on a massive corporate scale, there is fragility.

Snapshot

I wonder about creative destruction at the personal level. Is there something freeing about coming undone? Can losing it spark personal innovation, re-creation and growth? Probably, for some people. But not for all. Even the strongest person has points of fragility.

White and Black

Snapshot

I was playing with lights and shadows using a single narrow line of white light for my projector. The background prim is white and the blackness comes from wind light set to 100% black everything and bringing gamma down to 0. Then the only light there is comes from the projector. The thin sliver of light in the dark made me feel very noir

I love the modernist simplicity of NYU’s new Thalia coat. Eschewing all the usual outerwear detailing, the epaulettes, the fabric belt, the stitched edging and the rows of buttons, its design details are a simple notched collar and a single button. This is simplicity at its most stark and striking. I wanted to maintain that sensibility in styling and kept to a monochromatic palette of white with touches of black and silver. I chose cigarette pants from One Bad Pixel for their clean and simple lines.

SnapshotI added a fedora (color-change) from Argace that I have had for ages. I also added a touch of whimsy with CAE’s lovely Blizzard earrings in silver.

Snapshot

My pumps are from Glamistry and are as chic as can be. The come with a color change HUD that allows me to select the color of the metal (silver, copper and gold) and the platform, heel and body separately. However, I did not go for parti-colored shoes with my monochrome mission. There’s a lot of intelligence behind the Glamistry brand – which allows you to add color components to your HUD so if you kick yourself for buying just one color, you can add more later without proliferating your inventory with pairs and pairs of shoes.

My skin choice is Sia (FairTales), a new release from Glam Affair for Collabor88 that features soft and ethereal makeups, several with bright, fun colors.

Nous Sommes Tous Charlie!

Je Suis Charlie

I made these Je Suis Charlie pencils and have them out for free at the It’s Only Fashion office.

The first paragraph I drafted for this post called what happened yesterday at Charlie Hebdo unthinkable. Of course, I had to delete that and start again because it obviously was not just thinkable, but doable. Three of our fellow human beings went into an office and killed twelve other fellow human beings because they were offended by their cartoons. It all sounds so ludicrous, doesn’t it?

Of course, to say the murders were about cartoons is to miss the point. The killers are bit players in an existential struggle between modernity and traditionalism and modernity is winning. When you are winning, you do not resort to tactics like terrorism. Terrorism is for losers.

Je Suis Charlie

You see, if they were not losing the argument already, they had many other options to object to and oppose the satiric cartoons of Charlie Hebdo. They could protest outside the office. They could have billboards saying  “Chalie Hebdo is a poopy head.” They could write letters to the editor or to the advertisers asking them to stop running ads in the magazine. They could call for a boycott of products advertised in Charlie Hebdo. But their side is losing and they know it. So they decided to smash things and kill people.  Continue reading
