It’s Never Just Hair

jul28_006

Today is the last day of Hair Fair, so that means it is Bandana Day. Today we take off our hair and wear a bandana in solidarity with all those who have lost their hair in their struggles to live with illness whether from cancer or alopecia or whatever. Hair Fair exists to provide hair for young people who have lost theirs and the proceeds go to Wigs For Kids. Think about how stressful it is to go out on a bad hair day, now how many more times more difficult would it be with no hair? Supporting Wigs for Kids will help them put an end to bad/no hair days.

The floral bandana from Lelutka sent me on a mission to mix florals, but in such a way that they worked together. The dress from Decoy for Collabor88 has such a soft tone on tone pattern that is almost seems like a solid in contrast to the bold scarf.

Aglow

So Love Donna Flora is now open. Frankly there is so many wonderful things I am overwhelmed trying do decide what to buy myself. This dress from Ghee for Love Donna Flora was an easy choice for me, though, being my favorite color. Also, Ghee is a new-to-me store and that is always fun. The dress is alive, can you see the sparkles?

I am showing you the back so you can see that it enhanced with a big bow that drapes down the skirt. And look at it sparkle!

Sunday Brunch Quiche

jul18_004

So, I am not going to write about quiche. But this post will be a quicky and my college roommate pronounced quiche as quickie, so it has come to have an entirely new context for me, especially as she used it in the sentence, “There’s nothing I like better than a good quiche (quicky).” And of course, she said it front of a big bunch of people. Anyway, I am super busy getting ready for Love Donna Flora, so this post will be a quiche.

In my last post I mentioned that I loved this top from The Secret Store for Collabor88. To reiterate that point, I am wearing it again. It comes in several prints and they are each and every one luscious – as luscious as a good quiche.

Polka Queen or The Joys of a Library Card

jul16_012

I love this top from The Secret Store for this month’s Collabor88 so much. She produced several optiongs, but only one polka dot. Its bright, happy print made me go full polka and I dug out this skirt from Maitreya to wear with it.

Have you ever wondered why a print with dots all over it is called polka dot instead of simply dotted print? Do the textile workers dance while producing the cloth? Allemande left and a dosey doe? I am the type of person who wonders these things, wanting not just to know what something is called, but why? The best source for answers to these kinds of questions is the Oxford English Dictionary to which an individual like me could subscribe for $295/year. On my budget, that is not going to happen.

Enter the public library card. Public libraries in general have gone digital in a big way and allow cardholders to log in and access their digital subscriptions. My library subscribes to the OED (though for a lot more than $295) and all its cardholders can piggy-back their access to use it as freely as if they have their own subscription. They do this with literally hundreds of research and reference sources — just about every major research service you can think of. All for free, all available from your home computer thanks to the wonders of your library card. So let’s find out why it’s called polka dot instead of dotted.

Labors of Love

jul15_002

The things we do for love…Take this lovely dress made by Monica Outlander of MiaMai. One of the frustrating elements of living with cancer for Squinternet is that she would still love to create, she still has ideas and her imagination is still dancing along the runway of glamour and whimsy. The pain, though, of sitting at the computer and working prevents her from realizing her ideas. Monica understood that frustration as only another artist can and offered herself as an amanuensis for Squinternet’s idea, collaborating with her in creating this first MiaMai for Donna Flora dress – a new release at the Donna Flora store.

Not Your Grandma’s Porcelain Doll

jul13_017

I love how the ultra modern shape of this jacket with its extreme shoulder and the bold, urban cut of the pants with  zippered legs are merged with the ultimate in delicacy and tradition, the ancient art of  blue and white porcelain. When a designer can take such dichotomous threads and weave them into a coherent design, that’s magic.

Let There Be Luz

jul13_003

I was searching on Marketplace, on the hunt for a jacket. I have no idea why this came up in my search, but I am happy it did. It’s a lovely skirt and tunic mesh dress (one piece) from LuzieFree Designs by Luzie Cheng. While she has obviously been around a long time, this was my first time seeing her work. As you can see, the looks is summer cool and casual, loose and with thin, light fabric. I love the design and the print side panel. Some of the details are just amazing.

Cajsa Fast Five: July 13th

Fast Five I know it has been ages since I posted a Fast Five. I have been incredibly busy organizing the Love Donna Flora event that I hope each and everyone of you will attend between July 25th and August 11th.

  1. Hydrangea: River Pearl/Pearl Grey at Million Happy Endings has gorgeous photos from the sim Hydrangea and says it’s impossible to take a bad picture. She certainly didn’t.
  2. Challenge Gallery 46: Pot – Whiskey Monday over at Single Frame Stories posted the entries for pot and, of course, that word was interpreted in more than one way. For the fun and fabulous photos – head over to Single Frame Stories.
  3. Malibu Inspiration Open House: You won’t want to miss Editorial Clarity-Flux’s open house. It ends Sunday, so hurry. The details are on the Love to Decorate blog.
  4. Yes, I Know, I’ve Been Missing In Action: Wise Sandalwood catches us up a few really tough months and posts another inimitable photo in that style that is distinctly her own.  Hop on over and give her a virtual hug, or a friend comment.
  5. From Here to Ipernity: Frustrated by Flickr’s recent changes and that awful Yahoo bar? Well, Cieran Laval has switched to an alternative and does a comprehensive explanation of the pros and cons.

How to Enjoy Hair Fair

This will be the 6th Hair Fair I have attended and while that does not make me an expert, it does help me understand how to approach Hair Fair for maximum enjoyment.

  1. Enjoy the creativity of the store interiors. This is not just about picking up some new styles from favorite hair makers, but it’s about the experience. Many store owners have decorated and personalized their stores and created wonderful sets that are worth seeing. There’s everything from shark attacks to upscale salons to a display that is ready for MOMA. Don’t deprive yourself of all the ingenuity and creativity. It’s part of the show.
  2. Check out the new-to-you hair stylists. Hair Fair gives you an unequalled opportunity to find new favorites among the old.
  3. Check out old stores that may have new tricks. Some stores may have not made hair to your liking, but skills improve in a year. Folks develop new hair textures. Some are more inspired by mesh than they were by sculpts. There’s always a change from year to year.
  4. Buy some bandanas. The last day of Hair Fair is always the day we take off our hair and don bandanas in order to honor and stand in solidarity with the kids who are at the heart of this event. I made three bandanas this year with the collected plurkings of my cat providing the text for the texture. Hair Fair 2013 - Oscarism Black & White
  5. Remember why Hair Fair exists. This is not just about selling hair. It is about supporting the charity Wigs For Kids that helps restore the confidence of kids who have lost hair due to cancer treatment or other medical conditions.
  6. Join the Hair Fair Demo Group: Enter secondlife:///app/group/2e30d166-f3e5-e2de-ff72-b3da2d06ded2/about into your chat in-world and click and join so you can look at the demos in the peace and laglessness of your home. Also, since scripts are turned off, you can evaluate the huds at home, but not at the Fair.
  7. Follow the Road: The road through Hair Fair will take you by every store. You should give them all a once over, making your list of wants and then use the specific store slurls below for when you go back with your list of needs.
  8. Dress for Success. Drop your fancy scripted buds, they won’t work anyway. De-prim and de-stress with some low-impact clothing. You can pick up free outfits from DCNY at Hair Fair if you don’t have a low-lag event outfit stored in your Outfits folder already.
  9. Reduce lag by ignoring other avatars. Once upon a time I focused so much on reducing my avatar rendering cost that I would feel frustrated and roll my eyes at some primstrosity with a 18,000 ARC walking by, but if you don’t render those folks in the first place, the only people they will be lagging is themselves. What you can do is go to the Debug Settings in the Advanced Menu (ctl-alt-D) and type in RenderAvatarMaxVisible and reduce it to a reasonable number like 3 to 5 people and let the rest just be invisible or white eggs.
  10. Reduce lag with your graphics settings. Click the graphics tab in Preferences and hit the advanced button. Turn quality to low. Lower your draw distance to 64, enough to see what’s in front of you but not everything in the distance. Turn particles down to 0, you don’t need bling. Turn off atmospheric shaders and water reflections. Select Avatar Imposters so even the avatars you do see won’t be fully loaded.
  11. Keep the detail you need. Keep the mesh detail high so you can evaluate the hair.  Continue reading
