So Why DO You Blog, Anyway?

I can answer that question in many parts. First of all, it’s a hobby that ties in with two things I’m fond of, Second Life and fashion. It’s an activity in collaboration with my best friend, Cajsa, and with good friends I’ve made along the way like Hybie, Till, Acha and the rest of the team.

It’s also an ego boost. Anyone who says that they don’t get high when they’re invited to blog an event, receive a review copy or simply get a compliment, we’ll, they’re lying to you. I’ve been doing this for over five years, and I can tell you – I dance just as hard and happily when any of those things happens as I did the first time it happened. My first review copy was the LUCY Skin from LAQ. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.

I think, as I watch folks post their daily posts, I am missing your passion – the piece of your blog posts that are YOU. Where did you go? Are you just bogging XYZ because everyone else is doing it an you don’t want to be left out? WHY?

Pixel Gidge is silly. She loves her silly pixel life, and exuberantly wants to share it with you, in the stories she tells on her blog. It’s not about being first, or last, or one of the pack, but about being true to herself.

Pixel Gidge truly loves the things she wears, because she thinks they are beautiful, and because of THAT, she thinks you might like them too. She feels happy and like she’s done it right when folks IM her and ask where to get things. It’s ego of course, but it’s also fun. Because to Gidge, it’s not her standing above you going BEHOLD MY BEAUTY – it’s her taking you along in an adventure in her virtual world.

We’re friends, and she’s so glad you’re here.

So why do you blog? Is it to fulfill some obligation? Is it to fit in?

Because I can also tell you this, after doing this for a lot of years.

If you are blogging, SL blogging or otherwise, for anyone but yourself, your voice will be untrue. Your readers won’t feel engaged, because your heart isn’t in it. And you will feel as genuine as Miley Cyrus at the VMAs.

So I urge you, before you churn out that next post because you have to, because you think everyone else ALREADY DID XYZ, ask yourself WHY you’re blogging it. Is it actually because you love it and are inspired? Why or WHY NOT?

I just sort of touched on this subject with a blog post I made last night. I am actually committing myself to small blogging goals. I want to blog because I love styling, I love taking pictures (even if it is a huge ordeal for me–at least in my head), and I would like to share the styles I create with others. I really like this post you made, and one of my goals is to be more active with posting on other’s blogs and flickr. I really admire you for your longevity and fun you have with blogging for so long!

Honestly, I blog because I love it. I love taking pictures, I love talking endlessly about nothing terribly important, I love trying new things, I love stretching my skills. I’d love to hear back from people more, but my blog just doesn’t have enough of an audience for real conversation. Then again, I’ve seen dramariffic blogposts and they can get kind of scary. I have mixed feelings about the free stuff aspect; one the one hand it seems like a huge complement, on the other hand I wonder if I’m “bought” and I’m always more hesitant to point out something I don’t like, on the third hand it so helps to not have to buy some of the stuff I wear because I spend a lot of money in Second Life, on the forth hand sometimes I feel pressured to post when I don’t want to, on the fifth hand I’m currently all sad because a store I’ve blogged for for-freaking-ever just removed me so I’m all sad, and on the sixth hand being sad seems really silly since they don’t owe me anything, omg.
