My mother always told me to dress up when I felt tired, to dress happy when I was sad, and to recognize that sometimes clothing is more than something to safeguard modesty, provide warmth and protection from the elements, solicit attention, or display personal style and taste. Sometimes it is also a therapeutic carapace, a shell that hides our weaknesses and counters our grief and sorrow with defiant counterpoint.
Joy Sewing of the Houston Chronicle wrote a fun article called Why a yellow dress is more than a yellow dress. Could anyone who is feeling low find a more perfect carapace to project power, strength and joy than this bold, yet minimalist, sheath from Thalia Heckroth™?
At first glance it is a simple, modest sheath dress. Don’t let that first glance fool you. The sides have sheer panels that perfectly match the opaque front and back, giving an illusion of modesty that is stripped away the second you see the side with the long open sides on the torso that meet the sheer, skin-baring panels at the waist. It’s a “Wow, How did I miss that?” dress that dials up daring to the nth degree.

It demands boldness in my hair style and jewelry as well. Truth’s recent Etienne release is a loose Gibson roll. I used to do my hair like this back when I was in college and when I first began working. I had all kinds of hair rats in different shapes, lengths and sizes that I rolled my hair around. If you roll it tight at the start and loosely toward the end and pin it securely, it has this illusion of being just about to come undone that will stay all day. The jewelry is from Kunglers and the earrings are at On9 until the 28th.
These pumps from Glamistry are sharp and stylish, adding some color to coordinate with the necklace and contrast with the dress. The pointed toe pump will always be my favorite style of shoe. I think it is so much more graceful than a platform.
I chose bold makeup from Glam Affair to double down on showing a strong, upbeat and happy me to the world. And so yes, I can put on my yellow armor, shut my eyes, take a deep breath and greet the day, my inner resources strengthened by fashion therapy.
