Gidge sparked discussion the other day when she asked “Whyfor bloggest thou?” The general consensus is that people blog because they like it. That’s my reason for blogging, too. That’s also the obvious answer. Why would people spend hours on an unpaid hobby if they didn’t like it? However, I thought I might dig a little deeper and ask why I like it. Where are the rewards that make it worthwhile and pleasurable.
Well, first and foremost, I love fashion. I follow fashion in real life as well, reading Vogue® from cover to cover and poring over the ads. I follow fashion blogs far too much. (That’s a link to my bookmarks that I thought I would share with you.) Blogging gives a purpose to my fashion fascination, an excuse to indulge in its frivolity. It also gives direction to my Second Life® experience – a reason to log in every day, a task and a structure to my SL time.
I like highlighting the details when I blog. It’s the reason I shoot several pictures. The outfit alone is not the only element of styling. I want to focus on the jewelry, hair, makeup and other details because I think style is about more than throwing on an outfit, but it’s about bringing together different elements to make a coherent look.
That’s why I try to find poses and close-ups to point out even the smallest details such as this gorgeous manicure from FLAIR. I get an emotional lift when I can bring attention to things that are often just background. Details matter, though, and I enjoy highlighting them.
There is also the pleasure of marveling at some wonderfully unique and beautiful creation. Enjoying a work of art just for its own sake because it is special, beautiful and exciting.
Of course, there are more personal rewards as well. The occasional encounter with a reader of my blog is always a pleasure. The Flickr® faves and comments on the blog and Flickr are rewarding. I enjoy writing and I get to indulge that pleasure. Blogging has introduced me to wonderful people, bloggers and designers as well as readers. It is a connection, a shared activity with Gidge, my long and beloved friend and through It’s Only Fashion I have come to know other bloggers. Blogging is full of rewards, big and small and there are so many reasons to blog and they are all why I blog.
