Yesterday, three million women and men marched in every state and on every continent in the world. Every continent, even Antarctica. In 51° below Kotzebue, Alaska, people marched. In sunshine and rain storms, desert heat and arctic cold, people gathered to resist. Of course, the naysayers mocked and dismissed. “Resistance is futile,” they quote The Borg, an implicit confession of corruption. They forget, the Borg is destroyed in the end.

Of course, resistance is more than one march on one day. We know that. We don’t need to be mocked or disparaged for our success and our enthusiasm. We are not naive. They are not ready to listen and may never be, but we outnumber them if we only act and if we vote. So, start preaching to the choir, because if the choir does not vote, it does not matter when they agree with us. People who believe in an open society, who value liberty, won the popular vote. The people who do not believe in human rights and who want a closed, crabbed, and selfish society prevailed because many in the choir stayed home. So yes, preach to the choir.

We have at best, two very difficult years ahead and our chances of prevailing in 2018 are dependent on working hard from now until then. People must understand the connection between apathy and misery, how staying home makes it harder to make ends meet. How silence in the face of racism and homophobia harms us all. We need to raise our voices to a crescendo they cannot ignore.

While resistance can be scary, it can also be fun. Think of the pink pussy hats so many wore. They mock the values of serial sexual predator and the people who voted for him. They are a repudiation of his devaluing and assault on women. They repudiate the so called “values voters” who vote for someone who brags about assaulting women. Resistance with humor brings power and joy in the face of violence and repression.
