If role-playing were just dressing up in beautiful gowns like this one from Peqe, I think everyone would love it. Of course, in one sense we are all role-playing in Second Life, just some are role-playing roles more divergent from their first than others. While the /me narrative of role-playing is not for me, I think the role-playing community has been one of the most positive forces in SL bringing us hundreds of sims rich with historical or fantastical detail. Second Life would be a much less beautiful place without role-play.
I think it is wonderful that there is a fashion showcase such as We Love Role-Play (We <3 Role-Play) to encourage and foster high quality designs for the role-playing community. Of course, role-playing can be so divergent that nearly everything can be role-play. There are role-playing sims that celebrate the Jazz Age in Chicago and Berlin between the wars. There are sims that focus on the Gor subculture. There are Regency and Victorian sims, the Court of Versailles, the Italy of La Dolce Vita, 19th century New England, Vikings, Imperial Stormtroopers and dedicated students of magic.
So yes, while I don’t “do” role-play, my Second Life would not be what it is without it – so I do indeed love role-play.
