If you’ve been around a while you’ll know that one of the dearest things in my heart is the 500 Festival Weekend which is of course the days leading up to and including the INDY-FUCKING-FIVE-HUNDRED. The greatest spectacle in Motor Racing.

The Indy 500 is special to me for so many reasons. I’m FROM Indianapolis. It was something I’d do with my dad, he introduced me to the race, the joy of getting to watch qualifications from the suites (free food and booze yo) and the excitement of hearing the unique sound that only IndyCars make.

My dad was introduced to the Race as a young man, and was there the year Parnelli Jones won in the so called WHOOSH mobile – a car that made a woosh rather than a specific IndyCar scream when it went by. It looked a lot like #18 behind me there.

I might go buy #18.

I remember going to the race several times with my dad – and then later I went with my friends and engaged in the Bacchanalia that I had not been aware of when I was with a parent. You might not have been before, but let me tell you, the Indy 500 is a nonstop fucking PARTY from Thursday to Monday.

God help you if you have to work Tuesday. (Just take it off. We all took it off).

Two days before my dad died, he said his last words.

His last words ?

“Parnelli Jones.”

WOOOOOOSH.
