To fly we have to have resistance

To fly we have to have resistance

Resistance is not futile. Resistance gives flight to hope and defies despair. Resistance reminds us that we are a better nation when we embrace social and racial justice. While the arc of history just got a big kink in its bend toward justice, it still bends. We have lived experience that gay rights, women’s rights, civil rights and human rights are empowering, not weakening our country. They cannot erase that knowledge, the lived experience of Americans who saw that gay rights bring joy, that trans liberation brings freedom, that women’s rights brings advancement, that immigrant rights bring progress, and that human rights bring progress. They can try to take away those rights, but the living experience of our people prove their crabbed and cruel vision of the future is a lie. We will prevail in the long run. They are on the wrong side of history which is why even their temporary victory fills them with rage instead of celebration.

Meanwhile, we can still enjoy life…and fashion.

To fly we have to have resistance

So how should we resist? The first step is to support each other and that means finding or founding local human dignity organizations to educate on the local level, to support each other when the threat comes home to your town. If you live in a small town, you need that support more than most because it is easy to feel isolated in a small town that has no room for those who value and celebrate human dignity and diversity. If you have a welcoming congregation, even if it is not of your own faith, it may be a place to meet people so you are not isolated and alone. Rural Organizing Project has resources for people who are hoping to found their own network locally. You can also find local and national organizations that you can support. Some have state affiliates for those who want to be more active. You can be active on the internet as well. Color of Change has powerful internet campaigns you can join. Just remember, do not isolate yourself in despair, but unite in power.

To fly we have to have resistance

With so many opportunities to work with other people, I hope you can find one that meets your needs. You are not alone. Remember more people voted for hope than voted for hate. We just could have distributed them better.

To fly we have to have resistance

And while chest la vie recognizes that sometimes we are disappointed, it does not mean we have to accept disappointment and accept defeat. It means recognize the disappoint, mourn, mourn some more, then organize.
