I Knew A Girl Named Milly

She was the walking incarnation of the karma wheel, was Milly. She did good things, good things happened. She did bad things, bad things happened. Yet just like the old witchcraft rules, her evil returned to her threefold (although who is doing that counting is always somewhat suspect to me).

Born in the coal mining hills of West Virginia, the 9th of 13 children, Milly was born into poverty. Her exhausted mother looked at the two nurses who had just come to the house to deliver her and asked “What are your names?”.  Sister Imelda and Sister Ann they were, and thus – Imelda Ann was named – called Milly.

The rest of her life, was an upward climb out of that world. I remember very well when she built her house, she insisted that there were no HALF BATHS, all bathrooms were full bathrooms.

She was born in a house with no bathtub or shower, and you had to bathe outside.  She wanted no one in her family to ever have to WANT to be clean.

Sometimes I think that is what our 2nd life is for a lot of us. It’s a place where our hair isn’t too curly, our clothes fit and heels never hurt and we can change anything we don’t like with a well placed click or two. We aren’t broke, we can have nice things and things look exactly the way we want them.

And we never, ever have to WANT to be clean.

Coming generations will learn equality from poverty, and love from woes.
