Inspiration

Sometimes when you see a design you can trace its roots and inspirations in the choices of fabric, color or textures or in the shape and forms it assumes. In this dress from G Sloane Couture, you can see two inspirations at work. The print in the fabric draws pays homage to the fabulous art of Gustav Klimpt. In particular, it reminds me of the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer though it is clearly not a copy of that dress or his work, but something inspired and re-imagined from memories and admiration for Klimpt’s work.  The form of the dress is very original, with its squared lines and offset angles – and in it I can see the architectural work and Art Deco influence of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The influence of Wright is less obvious, though I see it in the square fasteners and cutouts and in the off-centered squares in the bodice. These elements remind me of his windows and furnishings and how he employed symmetry and asymmetry with such mastery.

I must take a moment to praise Lelutka for making these yellow and gray shoes that make the perfect complement to the dress – not only in color, but with the strap, stack heels and the rounded toes, there’s just enough of the elements of the fashion in shoes during the Art Deco period to be a nice little nod to the era.  The pictures were snapped in front of Tannenwald – a favorite of mine from Gustav Klimpt.

The jewelry is thoroughly modern and comes from EarthStones. The lovely bob from eha would be at home in the 20s as well as today and the classic beauty of PXL Creations Candy is timeless.
