Because there can never be enough newspaper dresses

LeLutka Clipping Dress

I love newspapers and  so why not show that love with a newspaper dress?  LeLutka, more recently Cachet, entered the sorority of newpaper honoring creators with this lovely little dress that is dressed up a bit with a lovely net ruffle at the back.

The ruffles and bow on the skirt add a sweet touch.

Is this not adorable? Now at the risk of stirring up a some drama, I am going to share my opinion about allegations of copying. I thought since no one has made an accusation against this specific dress, but that it is similar in concept to clothes involved in a recent issue, it might be a useful example because it is not involved in any controversy (that I know of.)

If someone buys your clothes, takes some photos and then puts those textures on a new  outfit, that’s copying. If they use copybot and then sell the copybotted product, that’s copying. If their outfit and your outfit could be described by the same phrase “newspaper dress” but are not made of the same textures, that’s not copying.

10316074_tIn the 1960’s Christian Dior said, I think I will make a minidress out of newprint fabric. He may not have been the first, but he’s the first I can think of. Who knows, perhaps Marie Antoinette had a newsprint dress, certainly if someone thought of it, she would have gone for it.  Since then many other people have reimagined the newpaper dress in dozens of different iterations.  Fashion progresses through a mix of innovation and reimagination and inspiration by other designers. The world would be a poorer place if this were the only newsprint dress in it.

You see, owning a concept such as “newpaper dress” is not possible.  All you can claim ownership of is a specific newspaper dress texture, not the idea of using newsprint as a texture no matter what the design purpose is.  You cannot own a graphic concept, just the specific iteration of the concept that you have made.  Many of the accusations of copying fall into this category – wrongheaded attempts to own a concept, not just the one interpretation of it.

Okay back to the fashion, I added this belt from E!. Whether you choose this belt or another, I do believe a belt is needed with the dress to really make it look its best.

I am wearing to oh-so-wonderful Prissy hairstyle from Zero Style and the CatEye makeup from Cupcakes Celebrity collection.
