Afternoon on a Hill

I will be the gladdest thing Under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers And not pick one.

Edna St. Vincent Millay was not thinking of textiles when she wrote, “I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one,” but nonetheless, when I put on this dress from NOIR for Collabor88, I immediately thought of her poem, “Afternoon on a Hill” perhaps because of that line, but also perhaps because it describes so well, the joy and contentment a person can find in nature.

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

I will be the gladdest thing Under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers And not pick one.
I am loving every single thing about this month’s theme, but then I love romantic and feminine clothing. Don’t get me wrong, I also love sleek minimalism and bold, vibrant experimental clothes, but there’s nothing more fun and feminine than florals.

Just so you know, there is probably a line from Edna St. Vincent Millay for everything. Take shoes, though in this example, she is grieving too much to care about her shoes.

“People dress and go to town;
I sit in my chair.
All my thoughts are slow and brown:
Standing up or sitting down
Little matters, or what gown
Or what shoes I wear.

or, for the ribbons, though she put them in her hair not her shoes, this saucy verse from “The Penitent”

So up I got in anger,
And took a book I had,
And put a ribbon on my hair
To please a passing lad.
And, “One thing there’s no getting by —
I’ve been a wicked girl,” said I;
“But if I can’t be sorry, why,
I might as well be glad!”

It’s pre-mesh and I don’t care, I like old things. Actually, my love for Edna St. Vincent Millay began when I was very young and bought a book of her poetry at a rummage sale. The book was Renascence and Other Poems and at one time I knew all the poems by heart, but now I mostly recall lines and short pieces. I have forgotten more than I remember as I am out of practice at memorization.

The Michelle skin from Glam Affair is also beautiful with its eye shadows and lip colors beautifully floral, too.  The backdrop is by Anxiety. I found it at Backdrop City and just love the bold REDness of it all.
