Hold Fast to Dreams

Langston Hughes, one of America’s greatest poets, wrote that we must “hold fast to dreams” for if they die, life is like a bird who has broken wings and cannot fly. When dreams go, he wrote, “Life is a barren field frozen with snow.” I think this is an important truth that we must all hold onto. Dreams animate us. They keep us from drifting into a stagnant contentment. Chuck Palahniuk wrote “Let me never be content.”

Sometimes people stop seeking happiness, settling for contentment. I think contentment is a trap. It is a yield sign on life’s highway. That’s where dreams come in. Unlike goals, they need not be realistic, they can be far-fetched, but they can set a framework for realistic goals that guide us toward self-fulfillment and happiness.

It is more important to have dreams than to achieve them. Hope is more powerful than success and hope is what dreams are made of.

In some ways, ISON’s orchid dress is the manifestation of a dream. I fell in love with it the moment I put it on and tried on every single color and wanted to wear them all — at once and forever. I am not even that fond of the waterfall hemline, but it is so beautiful with this dress. I dislike straight strapless tops and yet, it is exactly what this dress requires. I love the three-dimensionality of the embroidered appliqué flowers that are densely intense at the top and drift down the skirt. It fascinates me how Harry Hyx has taken elements that I am not fond of in isolation (straight strapless bodices and waterfall skirts) and combined them into such a magical dream of a dress. The sophisticated Barbarella shoes from MiaMai for her Bridal Collection only add to the romance of the dress.

Exile’s “You Send Me” hair is another dream-like element suggesting some heroine standing on a cliff overlooking the moors or on the Cornish coast looking out to sea. Or maybe a sturdy pioneer on the prairie, standing next to her partner as they survey the ground they have broken and plowed and planted.  The hair is a banner of defiance and strength – and of course, dreams. Defiant and powerful dreams.

There is something dreamlike about the jewelry as well – dreams of wealth and privilege all captured in pearls and diamonds. This old piece from Paper Couture is one of my favorites from them. And of course, the makeup lends a dreamy air with the subtle smokiness of the eye shadow and the gentle peach of the lipstick.
