Relaxing at Agent Cooper’s desk with a damn fine cup of coffee from Schadenfreude.

When my father died, my sisters called to tell me. It was not unexpected and was, in many ways, a relief for him and everyone who loved him, but that does not lessen the loss or the finality of death. They gave me the news and I sat there, quietly stunned at how much more painful it was than Thought it would be. I think I whimpered, trying not to cry. So my oldest sister said, “Go make yourself a coffee. It’s a good thing. I’ll call you back after you’ve had a coffee.” I had to laugh to myself, because coffee as comfort is so very much the legacy of my dad, a first generation Swedish American.

Coffee is a ritual for Scandinavians who consume more coffee per capita than any other people in the world. Most people in the US are familiar with coffee breaks at the work place, but in a Swedish American home, there are coffee breaks every day, when we would all sit down together and enjoy a good cup of coffee with some bread and cheese or some fruit or a dessert. And by all, I mean all. Children get coffee with milk as soon as they are old enough to hold a cup without spilling it.

I am in love with this dress from ISON. I wore it today and got so many compliments while I was out and about. I have to apologize for the texture thrashing in that chevron sideboard from floorplan. I really need to cut down my friends list so that I have fewer problems with this.

Perhaps the best expression of what coffee means to a typical Scandinavian comes from Halldor Laxness, the Icelandic Nobel Laureate who wrote the stunning and heartbreaking Independent People. “Presently the small of coffee began to fill the room. This was morning’s hallowed moment. In such a fragrance the perversity of the world is forgotten, and the soul is inspired with faith in the future…”

ISON also made the gorgeous lace up ankle boots that I am wearing and I added these two-tone leggings from FLAIR which are the perfect complement to the outfit.

Which brings us to Agent Cooper, a man who understood the value of damn good coffee. He and the other characters that peopled the surreal experiment Twin Peaks proved America was eager and hungry for complex and challenging television, breaking ground for smart and creative series from Veronica Mars to The Sopranos to American Horror Story.

The pattern the floorplan clock is repeated in my nails from Nylon Outfitters.

Agent Cooper loved a good cup of coffee. As he said, “I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just…let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee.”

Twin Peaks is being celebrated this month at Collabor88 – a hint of things to come when Showtime airs its remake of Twin Peaks next year.

Bits and pieces from different creators all work together. The house and chevron chairs are from Trompe Loeil, the owl from from Apt B and the lamp from floorplan. The rug is from Aitui at the Arcade and the wingback chair is from Bazar – and older piece.
