A Blogger’s Work Is Not Begging

I started out my early morning shopping and usual blogger work a bit earlier than usual today. I think of blogging both as my SL Hobby and let’s face it, it’s also a bit of a job. Some people role play families, some people role play being a space pirate, some people role play being a cabbage for all I know. I guess that makes my role play in SL being a fashion blogger.  I love it, I love styling my pixel self, I love the choices and variety of fashion – I love that high heels NEVER NEVER NEVER hurt my feet. I love being perfect based on what I consider to be ideal. I love that genetics play no part in how pixel Gidge looks. When I was a new blogger I surfed the Freebie Blogs like mad. I shopped the sale days for accessories and skins to bulk up my ability to style with more variety. I applied to events. Sometimes I was accepted. Sometimes I was not. I tried again next time when I was not. I’ve blogged nearly every day for years now.  Creators see my work and either like it or not. These days I am sometimes invited to events. I am ever complimented by this, and it’s still an amazing rush when someone likes my work enough to think of me. I don’t work hard at blogging because I want free stuff, really almost all of my log in time is now spent styling and shooting and shopping. But I do get free stuff because I’m established blogger, and some creators find value in me featuring their items. That’s an amazing compliment. It’s one I’ve worked hard for, and I can’t ever really express how grateful I am for their trust with their creations and the acknowledgment of something I work hard at. I’ve requested review items, infrequently, but I HAVE when a creator had a stated policy IN their profile about how they would accept them.  This has always made me feel a little uncomfortable, however. I dislike begging. I don’t find begging attractive or amusing. It’s a bit common. If you have to beg, you’re admitting that you don’t have talent and creators won’t seek you out. “I have to beg to get review items” is what you’re telling folks. “I am not talented enough for creators to seek ME.” I think you’re wrong. As a creator, I really wouldn’t give you anything free except perhaps to make you go away. I think you are talented enough. This isn’t brain surgery. This isn’t even math. It takes consistency. It takes time. It takes dedication and a love of the craft. Being a successful blogger doesn’t mean looking like me or anyone else. Being a successful blogger doesn’t mean being something or someone other than something you’re passionate about. But it does mean you have to get it yourself. It won’t be handed to you. It’s not noble or amusing, don’t beg, don’t ask for sponsors, don’t tout your amazing faked stats. Do the work. Your work will speak for itself. Excellent pose as usual! If I don’t apply for an event/store, and don’t get picked, I always take it as a signal that I have room to grow as a blogger, and I am modest enough to accept that nothing is simply given but earned.
