Books, Books and More Books

mar01_005

As interesting as many of Berry’s memes may be, I skip most of them because I have my own voice and don’t want my own posts and ideas lost in weekly memes. However, this week’s meme is about one of my favorite things – books! I cannot resist.

  1. Are you a bookworm? – Yes, I usually have a fiction and nonfiction book and a magazine in the process of being read at all times.
  2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic? – Paperback. I like the size, they are lightweight which is nice since I have had arthritis in my hands since I was twelve. I like my Kindle, but when I fall asleep reading it and it drops and hits me on the nose, it hurts more than a paperback.
  3. Which book is your favorite? – I have many favorites for different reasons, but one that go back to again and again and have re-read more than any other is Black Lamb and Grey Falcon by Rebecca West. There is a singular precision to her prose that I love. If you read it, you will know that the common “we didn’t know” excuses from the Allies about the Holocaust are untrue. They knew, she wrote about it before the war.
  4. Which children’s book is your favorite? – Pippi Longstocking. There is no other contender no matter what my sister says. She claims it is Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, but that’s her favorite book, not mine. I don’t even remember reading it.
  5. What’s the last book you’ve read? – The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.  At first I thought it was going to be too hipster for me, but it was not.  I loved it.
  6. Name your top five favorite writers: – Fyodor Dostoevsky, Rebecca West, Wallace Stegner, Ivan Doig, Bernard Malamud. I don’t know, I love so many and the list will be different in five minutes.
  7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you: – A Theory of Justice by John Rawls
  8. Favorite & least favorite book genres? – My favorite fiction genre is mystery. My least favorite is science fiction – though some of my favorite books are science fiction.
  9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? – True Grit is my favorite as the movie is better than the book. Least favorite? I don’t know, most of them. Maybe Tess which really does no justice to Thomas Hardy’s wonderful novels. See, I usually list Thomas Hardy in my top authors. I should go change that, but then I will never finish.
  10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? No, but I do buy books based on the publisher alone. You really cannot go wrong with books from Picador or Vintage. If you’re a mystery lover as I am, then Black Lizard (part of Vintage) and Bitter Lemon are trustworthy publishers who always choose good books. And of course, there’s Granta and The Best American Short Stories (as well as Science and Nature Writing, Essays, etc.) The entire franchise is wonderful.
  11. Where do you usually buy your books? Powell’s and Amazon.
  12. Do you go to the library? Yes.
  13. How many books do you own? I used to catalog them and had about 2800 when I was still cataloging. I gave away boxes and boxes of books to Books to Prisoners, but I have also added. 90% of my books are in storage.
  14. If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on? Tough one. I suppose about the relationships that develop in SL
